I'm waiting for him to lecture us on the Seven Deadly Sins now...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

The biggest trick the devil ever played was reminding us Kevin Spacey exists.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

It's like someone crossed Michael Chiklis with a Sanrio character.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

That's a big coat.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

such perfect casting & EXACTLY what spacey's career needs right now

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

LOOKING GOOD VERBAL!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Wait, what?

Lex raids the fortress of Solitude while Superman has been away. You might remember that he knows the location ever since Superman II. He strips all the technology that he can and tries to create his own Continent with Kryptonian technology which results in Earthquakes throughout the world.

Lois Lane has a kid and the father is Richard White, right? WRONG, the father is Superman. Remember that in Superman II after he loses his powers he has sex with Lois. Bingo! You might remember that it already has been confirmed that Supes has been gone for six years, how old is the kid? Exactly, the same age.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

SUPERBABY!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahaha wait, the new Superman movie is supposed to be in continuity with the old ones?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

So Superman Returns as a younger guy? Superman Returns to a sloped-foreheaded Lois Lane? There's a kid? I don't like the sound of this...

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

dan: yeah, it takes place after superman 2... and 3 & 4 never happened!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

dreams CAN come true!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

i love that all these fanboy fantasies are actually being realized now that a generation of nerds have taken over hollywood

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh, man, that's a bad move. They shoulda just rebooted the whole damn thing. That was the smartest move the recent Batman movie made (though I'm still not wild about Ras al-Gul being his official mentor). SUPERMAN II came out when? 1980?

I'll try to remain, like Thom Yorke, optimistic, but I don't know how long I can hold out.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

They might as well cut to the chase and have the entire movie be Clark Kent shoving yams up his ass.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

They should call it Superman 3 II!

I feel a bit ashamed to admit that this movie has me pretty excited.

I didn't like the idea of not rebooting the whole thing and missing the chance of showing "the birth of a hero" and all that lovely crap, but I have grown to like this take. It opens the door to many potentially great dramatic scenes. I mean, I've been looking to those pics of Brandon Routh disguised as Superman and I can't help thinking of how much I'm gonna cry the moment I see Superman coming back from space while hearing the Superman theme. God, I'm so pathetic I frighten myself.

I've developed some kind of theory to back up my optimism. You see, DC's adaptations seem to be going the same way the Marvel ones did; it goes like this:

1- The first one is always a hollywoodesque horror-thriller starring a not that well known character: Marvel's "Blade", DC's "Constantine"
2- The next step would be an austere, serious, "no kiddie stuff" but still blockbuster enough to sell some merchandise flick directed by a well known semi-indie talent: Marvel's "X-Men", DC's "Batman Begins"
3- And we finally get what we deserve: the perfect adaptation that nails the essence of a classic character in every possible way and at the same time manages to make it pop and translates it into nowness while not being afraid of its inherent colourfulness: it happened with Marvel's "Spider-Man" and I really want it to happen again with this one

duplicate post, sorry, my connection is such a crap.

iodine (iodine), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

One big difference between the Marvel Spiderman movie and this Superman movie is that Marvel didn't decide to take up where Spiderman and His Amazing Friends left off.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

if they use the classic music and the classic superman movie titles i will probably cream myself.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

i was just rewatching supes I (the extended dvd version) on the weekend. sooo good. one of my favourite title sequences ever!! (the one that begins in the theatre with the daily planet stuff, and then the globe on the daily planet turns into the earth and then AND THEN AND THEN SO GOOD AND THEN

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Dan, you flunked comic math! Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends != Supermans I and II! Summer school w/ Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley, and Courtney Thorne-Smith is IN YOUR FUTURE!

"One big difference between the Marvel Spiderman movie and this Superman movie is that Marvel didn't decide to take up where Spiderman and His Amazing Friends left off."

Yeah, well, I'm not sure if this will make the movie less accessible. So many people have seen the "Superman" that it's not like no one is goinna know what's going on.

That's one of the problems "Batman Begins" had with some of the mainstream audience, the fact that it wasn't coherent with the Burton version. All of my non-comic reader friends were puzzled by the fact that Martha and Thomas Wayne weren't killed by the Joker.

But I really don't mind it having mainstream appeal or not as long as it is a nice movie, so what do I care.

Does Ma and Pa exist in this movie?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

pa should be deceased...

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

but apparently he's using old brando footage from the first one... so that's a yes to the ORIGINAL pa!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I think Eva Marie Saint (is she the one from North by Northwest?) plays Martha Kent, so there you have.

iodine (iodine), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

whoa!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea that people were that desperately in love with the first two Superman movies. DC really is scarier than Marvel.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

they're so good!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

i'm way more into the superman movies than the comics, fwiw

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Iodine's analogy does break down where it claims that Spiderman was funner, poppier or better than X-Men.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

The second X-Men movie left me kind of cold. The second Spider-Man movie only left me cold as far as Doc 8puss.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, I think analogies as idiot as the one I made are impossible to break down. It's hard to break a thick, solid block of plain stupidity.

Still, I liked X-Men, but not that much as Spiderman. Maybe I found the portrayal of the characters a bit dull and I could never truly relate with Rogue, which I think was the one the audience was supposed to engage with, being the newbie and all that crap.

iodine (iodine), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

x2 left me cold too... well both did a bit. spidey 2 i enjoyed but was way too bloated

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Bloated with goodness.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

And yams.
