The rough version of the list is up.

My picks:

BALLAD OF HALO JONES TP - I've owned this at least three times before, and I keep lending it out, and it keeps not coming back. And I STILL want to know what was going to happen in the rest of the story...!

GOTHAM CENTRAL #34 - First part of this story was terrific - Gotham cops find a dead 15-year-old boy on the street in a Robin costume. Is it the real Robin? They have no idea--but they're really freaked out that if it is, then a) Batman's culpable for endangering him, and b) if they find out who the kid is they might find out who Batman is.. And then Batman turns up, says "don't you worry, just let me take care of this one," and disappears again, which completely pisses them off.

Still no ZATANNA this week, I see. Oh dear. Also no RANN/THANAGAR WAR, but for that one I make the "whatever" sign.

NEW AVENGERS #8 - Nice cliffhanger last issue. Incidentally, did anybody else get to read that New Avengers/FF team-up that was supposed to be available only to members of the armed forces? Bendis wrote it and it's pretty good--I found a copy in San Diego.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

I suppose I'll be reading Donna Troy, JSA and Y The Last Man, but the only thing from that list that I really want to get is Uncanny X-Men.

If I had money I'd be buying Gotham Central, just because I love Michael Lark (is he still on board?)

iodine (iodine), Saturday, 30 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Michael Lark's sadly lone gone to Marvel (where he does a little bit of work on Ed Brubaker's Captain America). Kano and Gaudianio (sp?) have taken over and maintained Lark's style.
Douglas forgot the amazing cliff-hanger ending to the last issue of Gotham Central, but maybe he just didn't mention it out of courtest for those haven't read it yet.

DCS GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES TP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 30 July 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Kano's not bad at all. He and Lark share an european feeling in his works, though last time I checked, Kano was more on the cartoony side.

I overlooked that Imaginary Stories TP!!!! I'm drooling...

iodine (iodine), Sunday, 31 July 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

I find Kano's art rather grimy actually (HO HO OH MY SIDES)

What's the Imaginary Stories TPB?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

DC Comics collects some of the best imaginary stories featuring Superman, Supergirl, Batman, and the Flash from 1946-1967! Featuring an introduction by Comics Buyer's Guide's Craig Shutt, and a new Brian Bolland cover!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Cool. I had a vague hope that it was that collection of Alan Moore DC stories, which I think had a similar title.

I saw it at the comic store a couple of weeks ago, said to myself, "hey, that's cool, maybe I'll buy it next week," and then a week later found that not only was it sold but that it's out of print.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I think the Alan Moore thing is called "Across the Universe"?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 August 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

That sounds right.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 August 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Did I say I wanted Uncanny X-Men? I meant New X-Men.

iodine (iodine), Monday, 1 August 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

O whatever the name they have given to the comic Milligan is currently writing.

iodine (iodine), Monday, 1 August 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Just plain ol' X-Men.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, according to WISCAT, the Madison Public Library has a copy of the Moore collection available for reading purposes.

Chris F. (servoret), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Only DCS GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES TP for me, but boy am I ever psyched.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

B...b...but all stories are imaginary...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Wow, thanks! I grossly neglect our public library system.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

B...b...but all stories are imaginary...
So you can imagine what a thick volume this will be...and for only US$19.95! Take that, Marvel Essentials!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

JSA - lots of references to Countdown to Ultimate Ineffable Infinite Crossover. Johns finally remembers that Power Girl used to know blue beetle! the JSA meet one of those OMAC cyborg things! Atom Smasher is sent to chokey and meets Amanda Waller! could this be the start of a new Suicide Squad? Hurrah!

Flash - okayyy. the two reverse flashes tie Wally to a magic treadmill and make him listen to Cher's "If I could Turn Back Time!" FOREVER. Then Bazza Allen shows up. Gasp!

Birds of Prey - pretty good. Babs try to reason with her alien brainiac cancer and Canary recruits all her super friends to help beat up some super kung fu fighters who are on their way to gotham. Fite! Fite! Batman is not a dick, for once!

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 4 August 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

TWO Reverse Flashes?

I'm really curious how Johns & Morrisson shepherding the DC Universe is going to go, as they're matter and anti-matter when it comes to the stories they write (but NOT when it comes to knowledge of history) (BUT definitely in how they respect the history).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

They are total opposites in that Morrison has so much talent that he can be wreckless with it, and Johns is the hackiest hack in all of hackdom. Seriously, how is it that we are now in a bizarro universe in which a guy on the creative level of Tom DeFalco has this much popularity and clout?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 4 August 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Take it back what you said about Johns!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Geez, Matthew, that wasn't biased or ad-hominemy at all! (Sez me, who will gladly pigpile on anyone that tweaks my nipple.)

Johns, to me, is a fanboy's writer - knows the history & continuity, knows conventions, knows how to push those buttons, and knows how to translate that stuff into the "grim & gritty" world in which funny books now reside. He's not so hot with the new and exciting mind-blowing ideas, but works ably w/ what he's given. Folks credit him w/ being able to handle a HUGE cast, but usually what I see is someone coming on panel to deliver a line of dialogue and then go "krakow! krakow!" against the Anti-Humanite in a 2-page splash. Or Dr. Mid-nite doing an autopsy back at HQ. When he's able to balance his trivia-laden trainspotting hoohah w/ either a bit of heart or some really great moments (as in his co-writing stint w/ David Goyer on JSA) (or some bits of Flash), he's fantastic.

In recent times, tho, it seems like he's wielding his collection of Who's Who like a bludgeon every time I turn a page. And (I know I bitched about this before) his arc / story resolutions kinda suck and can get REALLY hokey, which is funny for a guy that likes to "keep it real" - see one Rebirth, where the geeky kewl factor gets overwhelmed by some cockamamie motivational-speaker nonsense about overcoming fear and not crying over spilt milk.

Grant Morrison, on the other hand, is BURSTING with novel and exciting ideas all over the place, and metes that w/ an uncanny insight into the franchises and characters he's monkeying with. Crappy house analogy: if Johns is the sort to build an addition to an existing house, Morrison is the sort that'll tear out the guts of the house and rebuild from the inside out. Unfettered (as on various Vertigo projects) (and on some of the Seven Soldiers stuff), he kinda loses me @ times - this might be where that dopey Newsarama meme about GM being Elton John comes into play; "great melodies, but what the hell is he saying?" - but working within an existing framework seems to focus his madness and keep him in line just enough.

So, yeah, I think these two might serve as nice checks-and-balances for each other, w/ Johns grounding GM, and GM keeping Johns from going too far into the archives and forgetting to bring the casual reader along.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

They're like Batman and Robin! Nightwing and Flamebird! Hawk and Dove! Darkseid and Highfather! Edmund and Fitzgerald! Guns and Roses! Fred and Ginger! Pork and Ginger! Sweet and Sour! Vegetable Fresh Rolls! Shrimp Fried Rice Noodles! Pad Thai! God, I'm hungry!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

DAMN YOU HUK-L - now I, too, hunger!

JSA: Ha ha ha, there's no way Johns is going to get all his plots and sublplots tidied up before the One Year Later jump! Ha ha ha! Especially not if he's bringing in Hal Jordan and Donna Troy next issue.

Donna Troy: Talky-talky-talky. Snore. Pretty pictures. OMG, a Sun-Eater Factory! Could this be what Hal Jordan and Donna Troy are going to be talking about in JSA next month? Looks like I've just saved myself 3 bucks.

Gotham Central: It's been so long since we've seen most of Brubaker's shift that I've forgotten who's who. But I guess that's my problem, not his.

Detective Comics: I want my, I want my, I want my City of Crime back. Oooh, the return of the Joker! Who gives a steaming crap!?!

Justice: SNORE! You don't fucking start a balls-out, epic Justice League adventure by focusing on Aquaman's domestic life.

Stupid Comics #3: Saving it for later.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

It's been so long since we've seen most of Brubaker's shift that I've forgotten who's who.

Do Brubaker and Rucka have their own sets of characters on GC? If so, that's pretty cool.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, two alternating shifts/writers/storylines, except that since Brubaker left, it's been sorta all Montoya lately (and really great stories, but, y'know, at the expense of the rest of the cast).
But this is really nice storyline (though, fuck, DC's really pushing the Dead Robin imagery lately, what with all the Jason Todd flashbacks, War Games/War Crimes, and this--this is how fetishes are developed!), and the Teen Titans appearance is handled really well and everything is consistent with their book, but remains true to the Gotham Central tone.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I don't think Grant Morrison's willingness to chuck out (or more commonly just avoid mentioning) arcane or stupid continuity is a counter to his ability to reinvent X-Men, JLA etc. I think it's what makes these re-inventions even slightly possible. (I am drooling at the thought of his Superman run)

Or in other words, Dave, I agree with your summary, but don't really see how it suggests Johns is a necessary counterweight to Morrison. The job position that Morrison's in should provide sufficient restraint.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Damn you Andrew and your attempt to thwart my nice and tidy point / counterpoint! What's next - giving me guff for pulling a Kevin Smith w/ the 2K4 poll?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Geoff Johns: C/D

It had to happen!

To me, he's not even a dud. He doesn't have that much personality; he's just a hack. He's a distinguished hack because of his knowledge of continuity and all that. The thing is he's a continuity savvy Chuck Dixon, but a chuck dixon nonetheless. His lack of ideas is alarming, and I've always felt he tries too hard to give some heart to his stories, and he's just not talented enough to make it work.

He writes one of the worst first-person narratives out there, and his take on grim n gritty is even more immature than most of the stuff that came out from the late eighties. I really don't know what's Grant Morrison waiting for to make "Doom Force II" (pencilled by Frank Quitely mimicking Rags Morales!)

The only things that I really enjoy from Johns is his JSA, and that's because in the middle of all that dark and broody mess there's a Stargirl, his only consistently well written character, and that's probably because it's inspired by his late sister and all that stuff. Other than that, he's good at making enjoyable cliffhangers and plot twists, but he's not a interesting writer.

I have to admit that I'm intigued about this whole crisis nonsense Johns is doing and where is this going to end up. I'm reading the specials, the minis, and some of the tie-ins. But I wouldn't pay for any of them, and my overall feeling towards the current state of mainstream superheroes (and DC in particular) is that for the first time in years I've read comics that not only made me feel bored, but also embarassed. It's not that I've left superheroes behind (though I have to admit the thought crossed my mind), it's more the fact that those in charge of my favorite characters are writing stuff that's far, far away from what I want to read. These days, the only superhero comics I truly enjoy are those written by Waid, Morrison or Giffen.

iodine (iodine), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't it be Doom Crisis this time around?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I would pay good, hard-earned dollars for DOOM FORCE II.

Genius.
