Tomb of Dracula alone would have been enough to call him one of the greats, and he did so much more. RIP.

RIP, brilliant runs on so many books, probably the only guy who could have sustained and maybe improved upon the weirdness of Ditko's Dr. Strange. Tomb of Dracula is all time.

Kirby had so many imitators (and imitators of his imitators) but Colan, whose style was equally distinctive, seems to have had none.

RIP Gene. Another master gone.

Brad that's a really gd point, abt him being pretty inimitable - can't think of a single colan copyist, or any artist you cld really point to as being an obvious influence on/precursor to colan's own style.

he was the last of the really great silver age marvel artists (sorry dick ayers) :-(

I wonder if his work was especially tough to color, esp in the pre-digital days. So much motion/kinetic energy, so many times Drac was just a fanged blur of motion across the panel.

this is sad news - such a distinctive voice in his work, such a master of mood.

You got to love the point of view angles Gene Colan would take on pages, I'd say that was often one of his most distinctive things in his art.

I'd say Tom Mandrake is a vet comic artist whose style comes quite a bit from Gene Colan.

tom mandrake? always thought he was a horrible artist and can't really see much colan in his work

i forgot - steve ditko is still alive!

I see a lot Colan in Mandrake, especially on his unwriteoffable Spectre run (a title which, I think, he followed Colan on)with its creeping darkness & fluidity.

I always liked Tom Mandrake. The guy would have been doing work big time for Warren if he was from a different generation. He did GrimJack with John Ostrander for a while before the Spectre run with him. Mandrake did a few issues of Batman including maybe the first or second apperance of Black Mask around the same time Gene the Dean was doing Batman/Detective with Doug Moench as the writer.

To be honest, I think Mandrake would have been better than some of the guys that DC has paired Morrison up with on his Batman run.
