I guess #5 is supposed to be Gerry Alanguilan?

or as Tuomas would call him, "the Elmer guy."

last one mignola?
― fit and working again, Friday, 9 September 2011 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link
I thought about Mignola too because of the shadow, but it looks a bit too cartoonish to be him. I wonder if the written text in the panel is supposed to be a hint of who's it imitating.
― Tuomas, Friday, 9 September 2011 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link
also looks like kevin o'neill
― fit and working again, Friday, 9 September 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link
The last one looks like Jamie Hewlett to me. And the first one on the second row has a Moebius vibe to it imo.

I know I'm gonna ask a real zeitgeisty, generational question here...
But do they all have to be references to something?
― rolling in the derp (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link
are you asking in general or to this in particular -- because in particular, it would be like asking, "does the NYT crossword puzzle clues have to have answers" though I just looked at this friday's puzzle and thought just that.
― Philip Nunez, Friday, 9 September 2011 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link
The last one looks like Jamie Hewlett to me.
Yeah, the style plus the little bits of text with arrows is very Hewlett

I thought about Hewlett too, but the nose doesn't look Hewlett-y to me. Maybe it is him though.
Panel 5 isn't Moebius, but it's definitely a reference to some artist I know - the way the eye, nose, and mouth are drawn is very distinctive - but I just can't place it. How irritating!

Panel 5 looks like the art from Chew, Panel 6 must be a Robot Chicken reference.

Chew! That's what I was looking for! I just found this pic on another site and I didn't know the artist, but turns out it's actually from a Chew short story in the Hero Comics 2011 anthology, and it's drawn by Chew artist Rob Guillory.

Now, how about the other panels? I think panel 11 is a pastiche of some underground comix artist? Maybe Kim Deitch?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 07:38 (thirteen years ago) link
I've never seen Deitch work in colour holds.

And I guess panel 14 is just supposed to be a general stained glass art pastiche? And panel 12 is maybe a reference to the pictures found in vases of the Ancient Greece?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 07:42 (thirteen years ago) link
(x-post)
Yeah, I guess it's not Deitch... Maybe Jim Woodring?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 07:48 (thirteen years ago) link
Woodring not one for skeletons, colour holds, nor limited palettes either.
Agree on the generic stained glass though, and yeah, likely urn or frieze paintings for 12.

http://malinen.info/malinen/100characters
This is not a puzzle, but some Finnish artist has done 10 comic book character in 10 styles, so that each character borrows the style from the 9 others, and it's pretty great! Moomin by Hugo Pratt and Batman by Uderzo are my particular favourites.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 08:43 (ten years ago) link
And Donald Duck the superhero!
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 08:44 (ten years ago) link
That's really clever, and nicely done. Love the Moomin variations, especially.

X is a Pentti Jarla, a Finnish comic strip artist. He's quite popular in here, but his work is essentially untranslatable, as he's mostly doing visual gags based on puns and wordplay.
