I keep waiting for Card to go all psycho mormon facist on it, something bad has to be around the corner. I wonder if this one was written by secret committee too?

(There's a standing rumor in some sci-fi circles that the Ender thing was penned by committee and Card seemed to not know details of his own book during a few interactions with critics.)

shit, i never even knew he was mormon. amazing.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 8 August 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

yes, he has been given a hard time by SF fans for saying "teh gays are dirty and wrong" in pamphlets etc

Mark C (Markco), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

interesting.

this is what happens when i stop reading people's work after one book (in this case Ender's Game.)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

"Ender's Game" isn't obviously Mormon. After I read "Seventh Son" I knew something was amiss.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was only when I tried reading his nu-Ender's books (Shadow of the Return of the Giant Hegemon Puppets) that I got put off by the shoe-horned in religious beliefs.

I haven't read any of the Ultimates, but I always thought Iron Man was a pretty gash character.

I haven't read any non-Ultimates Iron Man, but he's pretty ace in The Ultimates! (nb: I haven't read any non-The Ultimates Ultimate books either)

I kind of like Warren Ellis's new Iron Man stuff even if the issues come out six months apart and it's mostly him regurgitating scientific journals.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Whoa Card is doing this?!? Has anyone ever read his "Folk of the Fringe"?

i love it when you pop in on this board, jon.

you can read ultimate iron man when you come here!!!

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
Man, I know this is OT but I just read "Ender's Game" and man is it crazy overrated. Sheesh. Wargames crossed with Starship Troopers. Plus, OSC is a fucking WACKJOB.

So, has Ultimate Iron Man continued to be okay? I only read Ultimate Spider-Man, the Ultimates 2, and Ultimate Galactus.

J (Jay), Saturday, 25 March 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

i stopped reading it because i found orson scott card's attempts of portraying school drama/bullying to be... badly done.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

While I enjoy reading about smart chemo patient/alcoholic Tony Stark in the Ultimates, I'm not thrilled by the secret origin of his giant brain. Did he study hard at school and eat plenty of fish? NO HE WAS INJECTED WITH A HYPER SERUM BLAH BLAH BLAH

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 26 March 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'm wondering who's responsible for the Ultimate-ized version of his origin because it has this huge moral cop-out: he drinks because it makes him into a fully-functioning person! I'd imagine there's the potential to say that yeah, he could come up with a better treatment to keep himself from being in pain due to being a giant blob of nerve tissue, but it's easier if he's almost always tanked. It removes a lot of the stigma from being an alcoholic and it reeks of obnoxious moralizing -- of course a hero like Tony Stark couldn't be a *real* alcoholic!

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Man, that sounds like an Orson Scott Card special if I've ever heard one. The guy's moral sense is completely wacked.
