It's up in all its glory.

Enormous ship week, yet relatively few things I'm psyched about...

JLA #117 - More of "Crisis of Conscience" - I hated "Identity Crisis," but this is playing out cleverly.

PROMETHEA COVERS BOOK SC - are there actual commentaries on the covers? That I'd be interested in.

SEVEN SOLDIERS ZATANNA #3 (OF 4) - Hi, folks, sorry I'm late...

VILLAINS UNITED #4 (OF 6) - Easily my favorite of the Infinite Crisis lead-ins, and reviving the old Secret Six/Mockingbird concept is a neat idea

HOUSE OF M #5 (OF 8) - Perhaps there will actually be a plot this time!

IRON MAN #4 - I thought the last one came out before iron was invented, actually

ULTIMATES ANNUAL #1 - Mmm. Millar Ultimates.

ZATANNA at last, but no KLARION. Oh, Grant, we trusted you!

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

FABLES #40 - gepetto adversary revealed!

zatanna, house of m; is this jla arc the specific 'dealing with batman going wtf about the brainwipe' story? if so i'll check that out

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

ULTIMATES ANNUAL #1 (MR)
X-MEN #174

My thought for the evening / early early morning: DC is making a big to-do re: all this WOO CRISIS stuff, right? In that light, would it be so hard for them to, um, get an art team that, um, actually stays for the entirety of the series? Or, um, just one stinking issue where Wonder Woman almost does the dandelion "mama had a baby" trick with Maxwell "Skippy" Lord?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting:

Batman: LotdK
Fables
Mnemovore (although this is getting pretty forgettable)
SS: Zatanna

I'll also read Maddie's X-Men and get THE 49'ERS, and possibly SMAX!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

jordan if you like fables and top ten you should definitely check out smax

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

HOUSE OF M #5
INCREDIBLE HULK #85
IRON MAN #4
PUNISHER #24
SHANNA THE SHE DEVIL #7
ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #22

I'm assuming the Promethea covers book is like the Preacher covers book that came out. If so, good enough to pick up in a remainder bin eventually.

But... Shanna! Final N4z1 b00b13s before the uncensored trade!

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Huk! Did you know that super-terrific artiste Cliff Chiang is the new penciler on Nightwang? Is he the new regular artiste? If so, what the hell? Put him on a book I wanna read please!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

He's just doing a fill in. The amazing Hester & Parks are still the regular team (i think Parks actually inks Chiang here). But, um, I'm only buying Nightwing because he's gonna go BAD and kill everybody in the Crisis as he tries to restart the Universe so that he still gets to wear the Grown-Up Robin of Earth-2 costume.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

GREEN SPEEDO CRISIS!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

OMG, I want a Batman/Human Target xover!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

jordan if you like fables and top ten you should definitely check out smax

Yeah, definitely. I got issues 2 & 3 from the artist last weekend and I'm dying to read the rest.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Mnemovore (although this is getting pretty forgettable)

DO YOU SEE?

Anyway, that's all I'm getting.

The Yellow Kid, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

What's the deal with Ultimates annual? Is that worth getting?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

But is this all that Director Nick Fury is up to‹or is there much more to this ultra-clandestine program? David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh well, then I definitely have to buy that.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Zatanna, finally, was great again, I'm not sure why others aren't enjoying it so much. Minor quibble: that promise that all the series would be "self-contained" and make "sense" if you didn't read the others -- that's proving to be bit of a fib, isn't it? (Not that it matters awfully.)

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Ha - yeah, it kinda is. That encounter with THE BEAST in Guardian threw me for a loop @ first, but seeing the same scene in Klarion definitely cleared things up for me.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

DC is full of lies this year.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Grant Morrison's gonna pull a Rucka on Newsarama and apologize: "Yeah, we goofed - you need to read every book to have any idea what's going on. It's why I'm called the Elton John of comics."

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

i love that meme

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

i wish guardian could continue with morrison doing it after the 4-issue wrap.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Didn't they hint that one or two of the characters will get an ongoing? Is it based on sales?

It's kind of like American Idol for comic book characters!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah i think they worked with that assumption. guardian got a thing in the times so maybe that'll work in its favor. i do wonder the relative sales, i'd guess zatanna is tops.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Wait for Frankenstein!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Also: actual plot developments in this issue!

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Just got Fables today at lunch. My comic book store has been moved into the fucking basement and I almost fell down the steps. Serves me right for wearing 3 inch heels there, I guess.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

GAH! jocelyn spill plz! WHO'S THE ADVERSARY???

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

clearly, the comic store guys are totally hot for you. xpost

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

the Seven Soldiers books all make sense by themselves, you wouldn't realise that those were references to other books if you hadn't already read the other books! Morrison said they'd be self-contained if you read them alone, but add up to something more and reflect on each other if you read them all. NO LIES HERE.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

JLA #117 - When we wise up and stop letting Batman build robots?
NIGHTWING #111 - I successfully resisted buying this! I'm making progress.
OUTSIDERS #27 - read the first two pages, before opting for a Michael Connelly novel and bedtime. Looks like the Outsiders may have done something unethical to one of their enemies in the past, and now its coming back to haunt them. TINY FOOTPRINTS IN HER BRAIN!
RANN THANAGAR WAR #4 (OF 6) - Kyle Rayner and Captain Comet SHARE BRAINS (tiny footprints not included). The Thanagarian God of Death gets drive-thru.
SUPERGIRL #1 - I'm so disgusted with myself for liking this. Ian Churchill does a great Alan Scott. If you skip the voice-overs, it's even better.
VILLAINS UNITED #4 (OF 6) - Catman's secret revealed! Firestorm ensnared! Black Adam meets Black Firestorm! Black Lois can't be far behind!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

In addition to the last two weeks of singles, I picked up TEH 49'ERS and Thor: Disassembled today! I'm excited.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

the best part about Supergirl is that she has the body of a fifteen year old.

House of M plods on.
Captain America was ok, but a little too thick on fanboy continuity complexity.
Action Comics was REALLY GOOD.

I haven't read Iron man yet; I haven't read the earlier issues of the Ellis run, either. I will maybe see if I can pick them up if I like this issue.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

What goes on in Action?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Dr. Psycho does to metropolis to fuck with superman. causes people to go insane and put themselves in harms way so supes has to save 'em. black adam and luthor appearances. lois in "living with superman is so difficult!!!" schtick... but it's good! i liked it! also, some giant cyborg attacks metropolis.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Did Batman build said cyborg?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

no, it was SHRAPNEL. (i forgot the name; had to go check.)

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I think Peter Milligan is starting to get the hang of X-Men, but it's still a little off. I wonder if it's the art, maybe? He gets a good number of zingers in - the Cyclops one-liner worked for me, even if the set up was illogical. (Scott and Emma had a psychic affair, so clearly they don't need to touch to have satisfying sex AND Scott isn't exactly a guy who would never be unfaithful.)

I'm not psyched about the Black Panther crossover except for the fact that Storm will be featured, and she hasn't been written well since the mid-80s, so maybe that'll work out.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 12 August 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

I really enjoyed this Milligan X-Men, it's like a distorted take on the 'classic' X-soap style.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

I only read a handful of Marvel titles and I'm a little depressed that Black Panther is going to have a House of M crossover.
Will Captain America and Daredevil have them too?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I've begun to enjoy Milligan's X-Men now that I've embraced the fact that it's an unapologetic soap (maybe to the point of parody?).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Cap, yes. DD, no. X-Men, Calgon.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 12 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I think I got back into comics at exactly the right time, about two years ago. If I was trying to walk in cold on most of the comics I bought this week, I'd be lost like Huk's mom's dignity.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 12 August 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Maybe to the point of parody? Jordan, the entire point of Milligan's run thus far is parody.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I've only read the last three issues, but I believe you!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and his Venom/Carnage mini was also pretty much a parody, an excuse to put the most stupid sentences he could think of in the mouths of both Venom and Carnage...stuff like "carnage, I've loathed you like a son", nobody could write that stuff seriously!

iodine (iodine), Saturday, 13 August 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I get the impression that Milligan has come to the point where he realizes that for some reason, not many people care about his "serious" work, so he may as well laugh all the way to the bank with the Marvel mainstream stuff.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 13 August 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

"HULK SMASH PUNY PAPERWORK!"

Awesome.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 14 August 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Is it ridiculous for me to actually be enjoying House of M?

J (Jay), Sunday, 14 August 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

It's definitely getting better as it goes along. Save a thought for poor old PAD, though, two imaginary stories in a row (both of which were and are sadly the rub).
