Sproing!

This week: Batman gets thought balloons (courtesy of Journey Into Knight)! Top Ten gets Jerry Ordway! Ultimate Spider-Man gets an annual! Douglas gets Klarion! And there's a reprint book featuring stories about, um, Captain Britain, Psylocke, and Golden Age Sub-Mariner, because, um, you demanded it?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

NOTE: Green Lantern #3 will also ship this week.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

GUEST STARRING BLACK LIGHTNING!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

BECAUSE TONY ISABELLA ALLOWED IT!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Definitely Lucifer and Klarion for me. I'll try Top 10 too since I've been re-reading all that stuff recently, but let the record show that I'm skeptical.

Is that Beta Ray Bill collection any good? I just finished Thor: Disassembled and that it was as epic as I could have wanted.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

AUTHORITY REVOLUTION #11

OOH OOH OOH I OOH OOH OOH! I might actually buy this, it's very good!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Detective, GL and Defenders.

So maybe this week, I'll resume my journey through Batman!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

iodine (iodine), Monday, 15 August 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Jordan this week; Klarion and Lucifer for me. Is that Swamp Thing TP taken from the current series or the Veitch run?

iodine (iodine), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Humor Can Be Funny! Hoorah! I'd forgotten that was being re-published.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Is Humor Can Be Funny the Magic Whistle collection? That stuff is great.

The Yellow Kid, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

The full schedule's now up, and I'm into:

AUTHORITY REVOLUTION #11 (OF 12) (MR) - Gotta say, I genuinely don't know where this series is going. In a good way.

SEVEN SOLDIERS KLARION THE WITCH BOY #3 (OF 4) - I am predictable!

THE RABBI'S CAT - This is by Joann Sfar, it's being published by Pantheon, and it's wonderful and not like any other comic I can thnk of. (I mentioned to a Francophone friend of mine that it was coming out, and she said "Omigod they're publishing 'Le chat du Rabbin' in English? AWESOME!")

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

there's not really that much i want to get this month! maybe i'll get klarion.. probably not. i'll get the batman "journey into knight", and spidey house of M.

how is ultimate x men these days?

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

I am getting about 382 things this week - a light week for me!

WHAT I RECOMMEND (that ain't the usual): GODLAND! Joe Casey & guy what does a really good Kirby goes gonzo! But not in a tired meh "been there" way!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

that looks good!!! i'll be on the lookout for it. i assume my local shop will get a couple copies.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Yay Klarion. Yay Defenders. Wot no crossovers?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Ultimate X-Men is writ by the illustriously bald BOMBASTIC BRIAN K VAUGHAN. The last UXM TPB that I read featured Longshot. I happened to have sold it since -- COINCIDENCE??

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

I will just get Birds of Prey - everybody will be kung fu fighting, it will be a little bit frightening, it won't guest star Black Lightning

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Black Lightning wasn't even in last week's Green Arrow, as had been advertised. But he was in Outsiders!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

local shop didn't have GODLAND. will have to check forbidden planet tomorrow. i got spidey house of m (which i really enjoy) as well as the new batman "maxi" whatever, which i am a little nervous abt. also got on a whim walking dead #20 (do you guys like this? i almost bought the first trade a while back.) and astonishing x men 11..

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Izzat the Journey Into Knight by Andy "THE SHADOW" Helfer?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I've only read the first trade of Walking Dead, but it was much more on the side of "relationship drama" than "zombie action" for my tastes.

The Yellow Kid, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I like Walking Dead!

(R0b3rt K1rkman is kind of a b1g d0rk though, not that there's anything wrong with tha)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

I bought the new Klarion and Promethea #31. I think that Klarion is easily my favorite of all the new GM series thus far.

I thought that the first trade of Walking Dead was OK even if very mushy, but I tried to read a recent issue of the series, and somewhere along the line it seems to have gotten too dorky for me to keep buying. (Cool zombie killing samurai chicks with swords! Spare me.) Nice art, though.

Chris F. (servoret), Thursday, 18 August 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I WANT MORE AUTHORITY REVOLUTION.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 18 August 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Klarion was sweet. I'm digging the final showdown stuff in Lucifer as well. Is it ending soon? Because it certainly feels like it.

Oh, and even though no one else can be Alan Moore, the Top 10 is a pretty good stab at it!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

spoilers oh no!

JSA Unlimited: Power Girl really ought to change her name to Continuity Wench after this bobbins (ok, it is quite entertaining). It turns out that Psycho Pirate (weights and measures man ahoy) is messing with her tiny fragile mind to do with the Crisis or something. Geoff Johns is such a dork he even comes up with a poignant rationale for the cleavage hole in the front of her outfit.

Birds of Prey: Fite fite fite as predicted. The best bit is when the baddies are going "ha ha ha, nothing can stop us selling our dirty drugs" and then Mrs Blackhawk flies overhead and bombs the shit out of their boat. She must have very good friends at the Civil Aviation Authority. Meanwhile Babs is cured of space clap and can - omg - wiggle her toes afterwards. Hmmm, given that about 15 major characters have come back from the dead this year alone, it is odd that no-one can cure mere pesky spinal damage, but I did quite like the idea of a wheelchair bound superheroine using her branes. I'm sure Simone will come up with something interesting though...

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh my, what was the "poignant rationale" for those of us who refuse to pay money for that sort of thing?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Her tits remind her of her real mum and dad...

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Each breast contains the souls of a billion orphaned space beings.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

It's her Bat insignia.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Cleaveage is a window to the soul, and she has nothing to hide.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

PS Geoff Johns: wotta maroon.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Daver is the closest - she tells superman that she wanted a marketable symbol on her chest like him but can't because - boo hoo - she can't remember her stupid origin. so she decides to leave a gaping hole in her costume until she can think of symbol to sew into it.

superman doesn't point out that her cleavage IS her marketable symbol...

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GLASS CEILING

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Did JSA: C #2 come out?

One of the more popular DCMB theories is that her bosom contains Earth-1 and Earth-2!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

"snow globes"

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Yes huk, it is - I don't know why I think it is called JSA Unlimited

I wish it had been Tom's orphaned space beings though

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Green Lantern #3 The return of Jack T. Chance! Yowza!
Defenders #2 Less funny, but VERY VERY talky. Uru is hot.
Batman #whatever Aaron Black is really Arthur Brown! WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED IT? Meanwhile, the Red Hood and the Black Mask play checkers.

xpost, crap. I missed it!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, Geoff Johns just needs to be lit on fire or something.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Arthur Brown?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Haha, that's what I was thinking too. Would've (did!) make a great comic book character.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

OMG the Ulitmate Spider-Man annual is SO DAMN CUTE!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

No, seriously - Kitty Pryde calls up PP for a date! And it is SO DAMN CUTE!

The newest Green Lantern was paced like a bad acid trip.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Granted, I'm the worst reader ever, but: the NEW Manhunter is there to take out the OLD Manhunter (from Millenium, of course!) that the NEW Manhunter programs to self-destruct, and there's some boggins about the NEW Manhunter running on Green Lantern juice ("It's .. A POWER BATTERY!"), so after the NEW Manhunter sucks up MOST of GL's go-go fuel (but not ALL), GL sucker punches an Air Force guy, "borrows" a jet (powered by Manhunter technology), intercepts the NEW Manhunter carrying the OLD Manhunter, gets his arm dislocated by the NEW Manhunter, loses all his GL juice, then JUMPS OUT OF THE PLANE and surprises the NEW Manhunter by ripping off its faceplate and DOING THE OATH IN MIDAIR. Gets his juice, NEW Manhunter goes boioioing, OLD Manhunter is taken by GL into space (where GL and the OLD Manhunter have some WTF talk about FEAR!), and then there's some pseudo-character development (Hal gets to fly again YYAYAYAYAYAYAY), leading to a one-page "Meanwhile..." where most of the GL Corps is being held captive by the Guardians or some junk.

Looked fantastic, tho.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

By the way, the WTF fear talk took place right before the OLD Manhunter went SKRAKABOOOOOOOOM.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Is this the Martian Manhunter, or some other Manhunter?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Different Manhunter. And not the same Manhunter who currently has her own series, either.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

And it's not the Guardians who are holding the GLs captive, it's THE MANHUNTERS! And their NEW Grandmaster, whose identity remains a SECRET! (I bet it's someone we thought was dead!)

And from what I can tell, all of the GLs shown on the "Meanwhile..." page were the ones wot Hal Jordan attacked and seemingly killed on his way to Oa to turn into Parallax.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

You see, because Johns wants everybody to know that he's read EVERY COMIC EVER!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

>> And their NEW Grandmaster, whose identity remains a SECRET! (I bet it's someone we thought was dead!)

sue Dibney!!!!

I never really understood the whole Manhunter malarkey

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

No man escapes them.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I have no idea what their point is, myself. Are they still trying to fulfil their original programming? Or are they bent on Galactic Rule?
And why would a Robot designed by DCU's little blue SuperGrans self-destruct with the power of an atomic bomb?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

They covered that in Kamandi #0.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

The "best part" of the issue: the flashback panels concerning the dredging-up of the OLD Manhunter just ACHING for an "Ed." box pointing curious readers to the back issue bins or the TPB shelf, and the woeful lack of "Ed." box action. Same thing w/ the new JLA, actually - like, y'know, it's cool that Despero's fought the JLA many many times, but how about TELLING DORKS WHERE & WHEN?

There IS a way to reference continuity stuff w/out beating readers over the damn head with it. I know there is. SOMEONE PLEASE TEACH SOMEONE HOW TO DO IT.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

I apologize for my rampant CAPS LOCK abuse of late. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I like the old Ed. boxes where they were all cocky, like "What? You haven't the thrilling three-part NOVEL where Robin and Kid Flash infiltrated the Mad Mod's gang? FUCK YOU BUDDY!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

"of late"

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

"In case you were sleeping, that happened TWO PANELS AGO! - Ed."

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Jordan JUST TRY IT.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

All right. This post will be at a normal volume. Hello. How are you today?

You mean you guys haven't been using your secret decoder rings to uncover the ultraviolet editorial comments?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Narrative overkill: the Batman: Journey Into Knight thing features caption boxes AND thought balloons.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

That's what happens when you let editors write.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

er, are you saying that a story Helfer edited about drunk Hal Jordan wrestling with his DTs (I'm guessing!) is obviously better than his run on The Shadow? [ie it could well be, just not sure what yr point is!]

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 20 August 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Not sure if this is relevant, but I served Chster BrOwn ice cream at my ice cream store today! He had the chocolate and cayenne pepper flavour. He was very shy.

Carry on.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I have a photo of myself ON LOCATION at the site of where one of Ch3ster Br0wn's comix takes place!
Actually, I guess I have several, come to think of it.
