ten months pass...
Hello

Bob Smith, Sunday, 25 June 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

Popped into the Tintin shop a couple of days ago and was amazed to discover this

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d7/Manitoba.jpg/436px-Manitoba.jpg

has been in English translation since 1994 (although in limited editions). If I'd been nine-year-old and discovered an English translation, I would probably have exploded on the spot from excitement. As it was, my bags were already too heavy to carry it home.

Anyway -- anyone read it? I gather it's in much smaller circulation due to the old "Herge native problem".

Fantastic cover, though.

The Jo Zette and Jocko I've read (Destination New York and Valley of the Cobras) aren't that great, they feel like potboilers. That is one badass robot, though.

They aren't fantastic by any means, but the thought of unread Herge books is quite exciting. Two decades ago, at least, I would've plotzed in a big way about it.

The robot has excellent sticky-outy ears.

Cool unconcious beardy professor on the floor as well. He did like his beardy professors, did old Georges.

Something else about JZ&J - it always annoyed me that Jo spelt his (and my) name the girl's way.

I think I always petulantly thought, "Huh, I'm a SMALL CHILD, and if Herge drew MY adventures, they'd be much better than THIS."

Etc.

Some of the storytelling in the books is classic, though: the first four-or-so pages of "Mr Pump's Legacy" -- from the introduction of Pump to his death in the car crash -- no dialogue, I think.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 25 June 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, when he's timing himself eating and sliding down the bannisters and stuff. That's one of the scenes that stuck with me.

MANITOBA!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 June 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to try and visit a Canadian province other than Ontario or Quebec when I move back next week.

Apparently, there's also an unpublished JZJ comic in Herge's archives, "Le Thermozéro", in full sketchbook story form -- like Alph-Art (except with the ending and everything).

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 26 June 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

i just read my first JZJ books the other day (i didn't even know they existed, was browsing in a secondhand shop & was amazed to find Pump pt 1 & Cobras) and really enjoyed them, not as good as Tintin obv. but still good & some great gags/scenes (the Pump speedy lifestyle, the man who feels no pain cancelling his show, the drunk snakes!!) Zette's not really given a lot to do though, seems to spend all her time agreeing with what Jo's just said.

You have to love the old "ring of glue" trick at the end of Cobras.

From Evan Dorkin's Blog:

"Tintin and I"

A documentary by Anders Østergaard
Broadcast Date: July 11, 2006 at 10 PM (90 minutes)

"Why does the comic strip The Adventures of Tintin, about an intrepid boy reporter, continue to fascinate us decades after their publication? "Tintin and I" highlights the potent social and political underpinnings that give Tintin's world such depth, and delve into the mind of Hergé, Tintin’s work-obsessed Belgian creator, to reveal the creation and development of Tintin."

I will watch this eagerly-anticipated documentary. You should, too.

And do go to http://www.pbs.org/pov/tvschedule.php for more info on the film, to see the trailer, and to check out the home page for a host of interviews with folks such as Dan Clowes, Chris Ware, Seth, Jason Lutes (and more) about Herge and his intrepid boy reporter with the funny haircut and the sort of talking dog. Somehow, no Art Spiegelman. Is that even allowed? I must have missed it, he has to be in there somewhere. Anyway, I haven't seen or read these interviews, but I saw some posted excerpts and they look nifty.
