I've just read this: http://www.comicon.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=004065 and it actually got me kind of excited. I had read some other things about the new Ellis series, but I wasn't expecting much, but this preview is very good, the Immonen art is stunning (much better than anything I had seen from him) and I like that Ellis is returning to his "blow things up and fast action" phase in contrast to his "decompressed style" phase.

OH HELL YES!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

This can't possibly be as great as the article makes it seem.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, sure, it can't be as good as the article makes it look, but that's the point of all good hype!.
Anyway, I hope we return to Warren Ellis comics where something happens every issue!.

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

This could be good! With the exceptions of Global Frequency and the rare Planetary issues, I didn't really enjoy any of Ellis' stuff for the last couple of years. But Desolation Jones had a nice first issue, and this also looks pretty good. I like Immonnen's art too; the last pic seems like he's been watching Clone Wars a lot.

four months pass...
Preview pages are up at Marvel (in which Warren reminds us that he loves FLCL perhaps a little too much), and yes, a THEME TUNE.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

The Nextwave Primer from the first page of issue 2 (abridged):

Q: What is Nextwave?
A: Nextwave is a group of super heroes put together by the Highest anti-Terrorism Effort (H.A.T.E.)

Q: Wait a second. I thought they were fighting against H.A.T.E.
A: You are correct! You see, Nextwave discovered that H.A.T.E. and its parent company, the Beyond Corp, were being funded by a terrorist organization when Tabitha (see later answer) stole the Beyond Corp marketing plan.

Q: That stinks.
A: Tell me about it.

Q: Who are the members of Nextwave and what are their powers?
A: Monica Rambeau, a former Avenger once called "Captain Marvel" and "Photon," is their leader. She can transform her body into any form of radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum. Aaron Stack, formerly known as Machine Man, is a robot who does roboty things. Elsa Bloodstone has a magical stone that she wears around her neck to give her super strength and invulnerability. And she's English. Tabitha Smith, former member of X-Force who was called "Boom Boom" or "Meltdown," can make things explode. The power is helpful. The Captain, also known as The Captain, is really strong and can fly. Though no one knows how or why. He's a bit sucky.

Q: Who is this Dirk Anger person?
A: He's the leader of H.A.T.E. He's not happy that Nextwave has rebelled.

Q: Who is that giant green dragon?
A: Oh, that charmer is Fin Fang Foom. He is H.A.T.E.'s first Unusual Weapon of Mass Destruction that Nextwave has to defeat.

Good:
Cleverish, funnyesque, light, quick-paced.

Not so good:
Often reads like a Livejournal entry or ILE post.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, maybe I'll let the Slockster buy this one and trade him, um, Queen & Country for it next fall.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Tep OTM (I've only read #2 though).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Flip through it in the store -- it's well-done (Ellis at his worst is never incompetent), it's just a little Poochy. It's maybe somewhat Dan Slott for an audience ten years younger.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

The Nextwave Primer gets some points because it conveys the tone much more accurately than the "Cable and Deadpool break the fourth wall" first page of Cable/Deadpool.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

that primer's description of Captain Not-The-USAgent is pretty OTM.

ample parking (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Were the heroes surprised to learn the HATE was, in fact, bad guys?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm .. not really sure.

Also:

DIRK ANGER: I hate girls.
NURSE: General Anger?
DIRK ANGER: Girls have soft bits. Agents of H.A.T.E. shouldn't have soft bits.

DIRK ANGER: They should have hard bits.
DIRK ANGER: Muscles and stuff.
DIRK ANGER: I have hard bits.

NURSE: Yes, General Anger.
DIRK ANGER: I do.
DIRK ANGER: Lots of them.

Posting about it is making me think I like it less than I do, but I don't. Like it less. Than I do. It's inoffensive fluff that reads better than it sounds out of context.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I am imagining Kevin Maguire drawing that, and suddenly everything's gone all Bialya in here. (here=my brains)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Context = nurse making a new bag for Dirk Anger's drip by dumping a bunch of cheeping chicks into a blender.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

F'R REAL???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

F'r real! I knew there was some visual gag happening during that monologue.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

FINE I AM BUYING THIS.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

I LOVE it. "Fing Fang Foom heart is broken".

Also: Dirk Anger is...beyond description. Buy it Huk!.

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:10 (twenty years ago)

then trade it to me for powers vol. 1!
