There is a Daredevil game out in early June. There appear to be no good X-Men games. How can that be?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 April 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I take back what I said in that other thread somewhat; I remember a sidescrolling beat 'em up in the arcades with the X-Men (Wolverine in his brown costume, natch!), which, as all sidescrollers were back then, quite fun.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Turtles one was best.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

City of Heroes.

Chris F. (servoret), Friday, 30 April 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that X-Men sidescroller basically the same as the Spider-Man and Avengers games?

Huck, Friday, 30 April 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought this X-Men fighting game for like $13, since it's an X-Men fighting game and all. It was pretty fun for a day, but it just made want to play a decent fighting game that's not insanely hard (so I bought Soul Calibur II).

I remember an X-Men 2-D sidescroller for Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis that was pretty fun.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 30 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't they making a 100 Bullets (!) game?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Huck: Yes, pretty much. The Avengers one was cool because it had Vision but the X-Men one wins because it had DAZZLER!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue spandex Dazzler or disco Dazzler?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Freedom Force was good but then it had fake-o heroes. Licensed games never ever live up to the license, do they?

David Nolan (David N.), Saturday, 1 May 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue spandex Dazzler

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 1 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the x-men one must've been later - bigger sprites, more pyrotechnics - tho i think i only saw any of those sidescrollers years after they were made. i think the king of them was an alien vs. predator one, which is kinda a comic book license, kinda.

games which have appropriated comic book motifs without an actual cashin: max payne, that awful last-generation megadrive/genesis one, others..?

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 1 May 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Punisher game in this month's Wizard looks good (SEE? I even read Wizard now!).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 May 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but what about video game comics?

(here's the comic itself. you should read it, it is the worst thing ever made!

WHAT IN RAO'S NAME

On the s/d question - X-Men Legends I and II, search. Ultimate Spidey, DESTROY it is rub. Hulk Ultimate Destruction is mega fun AT FIRST but becomes so eye-gougingly frustrating that playing it feels like being trapped in an abusive relationship. I should just take it back to the shop rather than be humiliated and slapped around like this BUT OH GOD I CAN'T.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Batman Begins (not entirely a comic vg) is fun, but too short.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

I got the Batman game free with my Amiga. Rubbish, but I think I spent an awful lot of my life playing it. It's one of those WHY THEY ALWAYS SEND ME BACK TO THE START WHEN I DIE games (see also the main offender, Ghouls 'N Ghosts).

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Which one? Batman the Caped Crusader was phenomenal. Batman The Movie wasn't...

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

WHY THEY ALWAYS SEND ME BACK TO THE START WHEN I DIE

Oh man, I hear that. I've been playing Black on my Xbox, and it's due back today, but it's, like, if you keep playing, you can go back to the last checkpoint, but if you turn the machine off because, I don't know, YOU CAN'T JUST PLAY XBOX FOR THREE DAYS STRAIGHT ANYMORE, you have to go back to the start of the (really, really long) mission next time.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

x-post
Batman the Movie, I'm afraid.
I had to stop playing computers games anyway, since my last 3-day Zelda binge gave me crippling RSI for three months.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

the worst video game of all time is scud the disposable assassin for sega saturn

++++, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

which is a shame, 'cuz that's maybe the best name for a video game ever. that, or Irritating Stick.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

it is one of the best comic books ever!

+++++, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

X-Men: Next Dimension - with a lurking case of carpal tunnel, the button mashing kills my hands. Not much either on every character having kung-fu moves, like a WB action figure. The arenas are decent enough, though some are much better than others. And the breakable bits (like DoA) that send you into connected arenas are fun to discover. But dud, overall - I"m selling it.

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Forgot to mention: playing Juggernaut, stomping your brother-in-law down with the same move for the 10th time just to get his goat, hearing Juggy roar "Juggernaut Rules!" = CLASSIC

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

X-Men Legends I and II both lack a basic thing - i.e. you can build your X-team up to Level 99 and unlock Prof X etc, but once the main game's done with - why bother? It needs to be either double the length, or to have extra missions - bank robberies to foil, evil mutants to fight, maybe some create-your-own-mission factor to keep you amused and give you a sense of achievement.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

looks a bit too much like Delboy's version of Batman but hey...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I didn't even know they made a Scud game.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Wow. "Batman" was probably the first arcade game I ever played, on my dad's green screen Amstrad. I just wish there was some way of emulating that particular version, with it's incredibly primitive 1-channel bleeper soundtrack - particularly the terrifying "der-dun, der-dun, DER-DER!" noise when you died. Which was fairly often, because it was one of those games were *everything* killed you. Someone did do a PC remake, but just wasn't the same.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Friday, 7 April 2006 09:30 (twenty years ago)

(CPC emulator: http://copacabana.emuunlim.com/
actual game here: http://tacgr.emuunlim.com/downloads/filedetail.php?recid=99 )

koogs (koogs), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Ah, but the one we had was the PCW version, which was quite different (and unemulatable). It was supposed to be a word processing computer and wasn't designed with games in mind at all, but for some reason you could get "Batman" and "Head Over Heels" on it. In glorious monochromatic green.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't even hardly know what an Amiga is, but the Batman game for NES was surprisingly great. I didn't realize it then but it's so much like Ninja Gaiden that I wouldn't be surprised if they just replaced the sprites or something. The wall-to-wall jumping up vertical shafts was a lot of fun.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Finally finished the Hulk game - it thankfully lets you cheat a bit, which makes the whole thing actually fun again. I'm sure I should feel that the person I was really cheating was myself, but I'm just thankful that the nightmare is finally done with.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Friday, 7 April 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Additionally, Ralph Garman (Family Guy, KROQ-FM Los Angeles' Kevin & Bean morning show, The Joe Schmo Show) will voice Green Arrow, one of the game's special unlockable super heroes.

CURSE YOU! YOU JUST SOLD ONE COPY OF THIS ASSUREDLY SHITTY VIDEO GAME TO ME.
