And what about BLACK LIGHTNING!?!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

JLA classified (can't recommend this enough)
new avengers
captain america
astonishing x-men

maybe wonder woman.. if it looks worthwhile.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind saying that I've got a giant hard-on for Captain America (the comic, not the character) right now.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

FLASH #225 - Sure the Flash is fast, but is he faster than...Black Lightning!?!?!
GREEN LANTERN #4 - Here's where I got bored with the last series, so...fingers crossed!
JLA CLASSIFIED #11 - based purely on the previous issue, this looks like one of the best JLA stories since Morrison left.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #9 - hard-on.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Ex Machina
JLA Classified
SS Shining Knight
Astonishing X-Men
Runaways

Good week!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Essential X-Men 6! Yes! That is timed perfectly with me having a $20 bonus at Midtown Comics!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Is anybody reading Hero Squared?
I D/Led the first SPECIAL and it was pretty good (probably better than Defenders, not counting the sweet self-inked Maguire, which is maybe the best Maguire ever).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I bought the new Hero Squared today, but I haven't read it yet. I enjoyed the first issue, so I figured it was worth another go. I picked up issue 2 of Defenders too, even though I haven't been able to find a copy of the first one. I almost passed it up until I had it, but the Maguire art was too sweet to pass up.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

And sheesh, what an anticlimax in Astonishing X-Men! At least we're all set up for what promises to be a pretty exciting third arc with that last page.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

fuckin captain america is so good!

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 1 September 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Dan to thread!!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 1 September 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

fuckin captain america is so good!

I hope he's enjoying it too.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 1 September 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Astonishing X-Men was very silly, with one or two good character moments.

Shining Knight was pretty to look at but a little chaotic and confusing.

Ex Machina = very good!

And I didn't read Runaways because our copy had some weird printing error that messed up a couple of pages.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 September 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

SIX MORE HOURS (or so)!!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 September 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Flash - typical GJ final chapter, nowhere as good as the build-up.
JLA: C - really good, but also feels like a series built around a line of action figures (not a value judgment, just an observation)
GL - Oh come on now.
Captain America - SO SO GOOD.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

So Johns was 0-for-Huk this week?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Shining Knight: Erm, what? Perhaps time to invoke the second Grant Morrison rule (GM + painted comics = dud). I'm loving the other 7S titles -- but this was a bit of a fucking mess, and I don't just think it was the artist's fault.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Johns is no longer the Shaun Cassidy to my girlish glee he once was.

GL actually is pretty cool, but, y'know, there's a lot in there that's just there to make me more anxious for GL: Recharge.

I also have a feeling that reading Solicitations for November's comics severe impedes my enjoyment of comics as they happen.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Xpost!
Oh no, Simone Bianchi is moving to GL next!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Back to Johns on GL, too much of it feels like he's addressing the Hal-Hataz directly, and fuck dude, you got a comic into the Top 3 sellers without the help of Jim Lee or Wolverine. MOVE ON.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Astonishing X-Men, which had been hiding its wheezes and unproductive coughs behind beautiful art and slavish Whedon devotion, finally died of tuberculosis. Has the Whedon bubble burst yet?

I enjoy how Runaways is unapologetically manga now; I look forward to larger and larger eyes each issue.

Madolan, Thursday, 1 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Ah now, one too-long story after one completely great one is hardly a death-knell.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 1 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

AXM isn't that bad compared to the rest of the X stuff, anyway. (I liked "Excuse me? War?")

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Even as a Whedon-lover, let me add my voice to the chorus of those who thought that this week's AXM sucked unbelievable ass. Moreover, based upon what appears to be unpcoming, I fear for the future.

J (Jay), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I fear for the FRILLY SHIRTS of the future.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't care so much about the frilly shirts as I do about the fact that we're going to see so much in the way of retread on the Emma Frost front. Although it is kind of amazing that Whedon has apparently decided to pretend that Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men was a just Dallas-style bad dream. WHAT IS THE MAGICAL POWER OF CLAREMONT?

J (Jay), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I hope he doesn't roll back her character developments as well, but that's got to be a red herring.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

One would hope, but:

Kitty Pryde + Colossus + Dr. X and Cyclops argue about morality come really close to = EMMA FROST BADSEXY

J (Jay), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Although it is kind of amazing that Whedon has apparently decided to pretend that Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men was a just Dallas-style bad dream.

Everything after the first story, anyway. And totally ignoring the fate of Cassandra Nova.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

OK -

Astonishing X-Men 12: Poor, I thought. Nice art but the "Noooo the GUILT" resolution was feeble and the Emma thing is annoying and also, sorry, WTF are the [EVIL BAD GUYS] doing going out to Genosha just to watch a fight? With a super-atomic sentinel who killed 15 million mutants? And a guy there with the greatest sense of smell powers in the world? Don't they have Emma's mobile number?

Flash 225: Mawkish rubbish.

Runaways 7: Hurrah, a good comic! Well, pretty good, soapy plot movement and always nice to see Swarm. I like the "opt out of the fight" ethos too! I am also glad Karolina is getting to do something other than be a waifish alium.

Green Lantern 4: This was OK, Hector Hammond kind of interestingly done though a bit too pitiful, nice gory final page.

More to come, perhaps!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, my feeling about Whedon's X-Men is that he's actually going too close to the Morrison run by apparently creating this convoluted backstory connecting the Hellfire Club, Cassandra, the Genoshan massacre, and Xavier that does nothing to improve upon the perfection of E Is For Extinction.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Also, I strongly doubt that Whedon is going to do anything to counter the origin of Ernst. It's not necessary - Cassandra is a bodiless being, right? And I had always assumed that the origin provided by Charles was a cover, something that Morrison had intended to reveal later on.

Of course, this is just another example of seeds for wonderful stories planted by Morrison being squandered in the short term. They should have done a new version of the New Mutants focusing on the remainder of the "Special Class," and the rest of the school would inadvertantly learn that Ernst is actually Cassandra, and treat her horribly for her role in the Genoshan massacre and push for her expulsion. Eventually, she could emerge as Cassandra! It would've been way more interesting, anyway.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

AXM12 felt like a story I've read about 500 times before with the sole exception of The Beast's characterization which was AWESOME-O (he also got the best lines).

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I enjoy how Runaways is unapologetically manga now

But the guy who drew this issue also drew the Cloak and Dazzler issue from v1!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 2 September 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

And I said that before actually reading the new issue. Redacted!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 2 September 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Shining Knight 4: OK I was surprised by the revelation about "Sir" "Justin" but erm SO??? That said I liked it, despite the rubbish storytelling and the sinking feeling that I'm going to have to wait until Zatanna or later to read what's really going on.

JLA Classified 11: It is nice to see Jackson Guice draw the Flash again! I am enjoying this though I suspect the explenation will be on the lame side.

Wonder Woman 220: I cannot be the only person who honestly does not care at all whether Wonder Woman and Batman are mates. I had never given it a single thought before this issue and will not do so again, except that DC seem to be basing a whole crossover on it. Also the fate of Max Lord is not keeping me awake at night writhing in moral dilemmatude. Also this is the third or fourth week in a row where a comic has recapped it. In a word, rub.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Ha - you shd read Adventures of Superman, Tom. First 10 pages = Superman hallucinating just before WW does her massage. And then some Rags Morales long facing between WW & Supes before they zip off to save the world. And then some grousing w/ the Batman. (Please note: I am liking this DRAMA. Not that I really care whether things will be put right, but: DRAMA.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I did read Adventures Of Superman! It was abject. Is Rucka meant to be good?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Re: Green Lantern - pretty OK up until the "I want to be like you SUPER HUNK HAL JORDAN" moment. FFS, it's not like he's Michael Jordan. And is it really necessary to sex up The Shark by showing him WITH A HUMAN HEAD AND LEG STILL IN HIS MOUTH? (Johns has a tendency to do this, doesn't he? Update villains for a "new" audience? In the PussyPym issue of Avengers, he turned Whirlwind into a ho-beating psychopath w/ a woody for Ms. Van Dyne. Like, um, why?)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Tom: his work on Wonder Woman prior to the COUNTDOWN TO INFINITE OMACS hoohah is good! As are the Myxptlyk (sic) issues of Adventures. & there's always Gotham Central & Queen & Country.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

And is it really necessary to sex up The Shark by showing him WITH A HUMAN HEAD AND LEG STILL IN HIS MOUTH?

Unequivocally YES. In fact the only way it would be better would be if issue #5 has Tom Kalmaku on the cover going "NOOOOOOOO! Please - let me DROWN - BEFORE The Shark gets me!"

xpost I had forgotten he did Gotham Central. That is so good and this stuff is so bad, it causes the sad face. :(

Tom (Groke), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

If I see Gorilla Grodd trying to mount Power Girl any time in the next year, I'm leaving. (If Detective Chimp does, however, I'm buying 2.)

What is up w/ crit-fave writers mixing it up in INFINITE VENGEANCE OF MOHAWKED SUPER ROBOTS WITH WINGS and delivering sketchy results?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

EDITORIALLY DRIVEN STORIES.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, I just realized I haven't actually READ GL#4 yet.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh gee, I guess I had.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 3 September 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

i got shining knight four (does that mean NONE of them will have proper endings? oy oy oy) and powers anniversary special both of which seemed less vital than i wanted them to. sad bit in the interview at back of the latter: bendis thinking it took until issue three or so to work out what was happening in 'forever'. i mean, really?
