from the NYTimes, the next batch of marvel superheroes to make it to theaters

Marvel Launches Film Slate

Marvel Enterprises Inc., which has a library of more than 5,000 characters, announced that a $525 million financing deal would make possible the production of 10 films, based on its stable of comic book properties, over the next seven years. In recognition of its newly expanded film production focus, the company will change its name to Marvel Entertainment Inc. The properties for the 10 films to be announced today are Captain America; Nick Fury; the Avengers; Black Panther; Ant-Man; Cloak & Dagger; Dr. Strange; Hawkeye; Power Pack; and Shang-Chi. Each film is expected to carry a budget of up to $165 million and a rating no more restrictive than PG-13. Summer 2008 will bring the first theatrical release (it is too early to say which one), followed by two releases each year. Paramount Pictures will be the sole distributor and marketing partner for each film. CATHERINE BILLEY

Ant Man!!!!

Man, they are gonna have a hard time turning this stuff into something interesting...

iodine (iodine), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh, those are all going to suck.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Ones that might not suck: Shang-Chi, Nick Fury, Dr. Strange. I have the high hopes.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Gilliam should do Dr. Strange.

Anyone seen the Hasslehoff Nick Fury? Fucking dreadful.

chap who would dare to thwart the revolution (chap), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

hasslehoff nick fury?!! no shit!!

they should do NF like he is in the ultimate x-men comics (actually that's all i really know him by)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Out of all of those, cap is the only one that even remotley qualifies as a big gun, no?

Nick Fury, Black Panther, Dr.Strange and I *guess* Hawkeye could turn interesting. They're all well-decent characters who can be tackled in various interesting ways; with some, the b-league status might actually help - no big franchise to live up to/fall in line with.

Ant Man, uhm, yeah. I'm also very puzzled by the Avengers movie - are they gonna make it correspond with the Avengers' standing in the Marvel universe, or are they just gonna take some of those characters and show them off as just another group of super-heroes?

If they keep the tone of Brubaker's Captain America, I'll be down.
Nick Fury, see above. Build Fury up as strong supporting character in the Cap movie, then Elektra him out on his own to fight Terry Stamp.
the Avengers - Oh fuck off. This movie will never be made, and shame on them for pretending it might be.
Black Panther - FROM THE DIRECTOR OF HOUSE PARTY 2!
Ant-Man - Only if it's a remake of Inner Space.
Cloak & Dagger - It will never live up to the Dabney Coleman vehicle of the same name.
Dr. Strange - Get Liam Neeson on the phone. NOW!
Hawkeye - I can't imagine anyone would care.
Power Pack - See above.
Shang-Chi - Blank enough slate that it could be good.

Huk-L Has Spoken. (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

no silver surfer?

Already going through the process at Fox. Hence also no mention of in-production or development props like Ghost Rider, Sub-Mariner, Cage, etc.

The most interesting part of this news to me is the Paramount-exclusivity. New management there has been looking to "shake things up," and this looks like a move in what they believe to be that direction.

Dr. Strange has been in and out of turnaround for years, a fact interesting to me only because I've always wanted to be the writer...

Many of these will make it no further than this announcement. Huk-L pretty much OTM wrt which ones, though Power Pack might make it through development on the strength of THE INCREDIBLES ("they're kids! they're superheroes! it can't miss!").

I would kill for a good Cloak & Dagger, but the PG-13 rating requirement seems to make that unlikely.

Liam Neeson rocks the strong facial hair in Batman, but sorry Huk, he strikes me as waaaay too physically robust for the role of Dr. Strange. The hulking Neeson actually could solve a problem with his fists. Dr. Strange has the delicate hands of a surgeon. J-Depp however...

And remember: Clea=beard.

See, I only really know Dr. Strange from the current Defenders series, so I'm thinking pompous windbag.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

The Giffen DeMatteis Maguire Defenders Comedy And Variety Hour is pretty clutch though.

Best. Dormammu. EVER.
