Inspired by Tom's CBR thread, and also because I've been meaning to ask for Mighty Thor! recommendations.

It looks like a whole lot of Thor has been collected, and to my knowledge I've never read any of it. I did read Oeming's Thor arc recently, and it made me want to check out Simonson's presumably-more-fun (?) version.

I remember liking Simonson's Thor a lot as a teenager. The way he focused on the mythological/epic stuff and ditched almost all the superheroics was cool. Also, he kept building the big plot for two years or something, until it finally exploded. Didn't the Surtur war spread to other Marvel comics too at the time?

Yes, it was a really good use of a shared-universe. The crossovers were 'red skies crossovers' (i.e. very tangential, "God why's it snowing in LA" type things) so they weren't promoted except with a discreet "*see current issues of Thor" box.

I can't think of a bad comic Simonson's done, to be honest. Maybe some of the stuff he only drew, like the X-Factor run his wife wrote, even so the art was pretty cool.

Tell me about space horse Thor played by Vincent D'Onofrio.

I guess I'll just start at the beginning then. Although, what the hell is the difference between Marvel VISIONARIES and Marvel LEGENDS collections??

I can't think of a bad Simonson comic either, though I have to admit his art makes wonders for me.

Thor starts pretty good with the Beta Ray Bill stuff (337) and then gets TOTALLY AWESOME around 342-3 with the insane casket of ancient winters plot which just keeps going and going until the huge FITE in 354, and then things calm down a bit and you get some neat one or two parters (including my first ever issue of Thor), and then the great Harrowing of Hel story w/the executioner, and then OMG the THUNDER FROG, and then Sal Buscema takes over on art and you get the strange Judge Dredd tribute story and the Mutant Massacre x-over and the Hela's curse storyline and the KEWL NEW ARMOUR. The later issues are not as well regarded but I was buying them at the time and I thought they were completely brilliant.

The later issues are not as well regarded...

Sez who? That's the only bit of Simonson's Thor I read, and it was AWESOME! FING FANG FOOM = THE MIDGARD SERPENT!

Spoileriffic!

OK "not as well regarded" = "not as fussed over as the Surtur Saga"

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

BUMP

if only to pretend that Hawkgirl never ever ever happened, and give props to Orion (at least in the art department).

oh no rereading the Weezie (aka Louise Simonson) thread I'm remembering the latter-era X-Factor books w/ Al Milgrom on the inks instead of Bob Wiacek ;_;

I also liked the FF Simonson, which he also took over with ish #337. These have been partially reprinted as part of the FF Visionaries series and the colors look great compared to the originals.
You can also occasionally find his 'Star Slammers' graphic novel in used bins, probably next to the Keith Giffen adaptation of a Robert Bloch novella 'Hell on Earth' and the Kirby's 'Hunger Dogs', all of which are routinely left on shelves by fanboys in favor of more mainstream superheroics.
