Your One Year Later Guesses

For all my genuine lack of interest in Infinite Crisis (oh look, its Lady Quark), the presmise behind One Year Later seems like an hilarious way for us to spoil DC's party. After all we all know what they do when someone guesses their twists.

So, as we know, certain title characters will change, certain names will be inherited by new (or old) characters and certain premises will be radically altered (HELLO GRANT MORRISON!) So spoil DC's party. Guess 'em so they can't do them.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

I for one hope they are changing the lead character in Supergirl, because DC Universe needs another Supergirl.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand a word of this.

chap who would dare to thwart the revolution (chap), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Basically, after the end of the latest crossover, every DC book will skip forward a year. I'm not clear whether this is directly related to the crossover or is just going to happen anyway. You wouldn't have known about this unless you were for some reason reading the Infinite Crisis thread. Which may put you in an analogous position to many of DC readers.

Didn't some Priest-written series do this before in a mental manner, where it was brought back from the dead after a year+ of cancellation, and just kept the numbering consistent with if the series had continued publishing (and made regular reference to earth-shaking actions that had happened in the interregnum)?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Quantum and Woody??

An event in Infinite Crisis will trigger this apparently.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Teen Titans will be Young Adult Titans!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I just loooked up Quantum and Woody, and it's more broken than I thought. The series stopped at #18 when Acclaim went under, then when it resurfaced a year and a half later they put out #32-34 with massive changes to all the characters. Then they went back to #19, and started making the issues that would explain why everything happened. Acclaim went under again at #21.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

G.M. on the 52 series (which will supposedly fill in the One Year Gap):

Then there's 52, the big DC weekly comic which I'm plotting and writing in collaboration with Mark Waid, Geoff Johns, Keith Giffen and Greg Rucka for a spring 2006 launch. I love being the bass player in the first comics supergroup. That's going very well and I can't wait to see what people think of it. The series is being created and written like a TV show and the results have so far been spectacular, as far as I'm concerned. It's the DC Universe in Hi Res close up detail, as never seen before. Very unusual stuff.

Johan Hex is Batman's father.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I was just trolling, er, reading on the DC boards that not only does Bruce Wayne own the Daily Planet, but he also owns the building that Clark and Lois have an apartment in. What a fucking psycho.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Batman OWNS Superman. Don't you see?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Someone in the DCU has a merkin... BUT WHO??????

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Curse you for making me find out what a merkin is.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, the obvious answer is Green Arrow.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Batman will be the new Robin. Lex Luthor will be the new Batman. i will be the new Lex Luthor. Hawkman will be the new me. Kanye West: "Green Lantern doesn't care about black people."

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Hal Jordan is black for a day, runs afoul of white-for-a-day John Stewart. "it's important that I live the next 24 hours as a black woman!" shouts Jimmy Olsen. At a state funeral for OLD MAN SHAZAM!!

Vic Fluro, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

And every time Billy Batson tries to deliver the eulogy...KA-BOOM!
And everybody blames Black Lightning, who is living as a black woman that day, too.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Are there any actual black women in the dcu?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

But Luthor is spending a day - AS BLACK LIGHTNING! "It's important to me to understand where he's at!" Superman refuses but Batman places him in the Bat-transformoflux in an attempt to 'take down' a rampaging Booster Gold!

Huk: I think Steel knows one or two. if you mean superheroines - couldn't tell you.

Vic Fluro, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Okay, yeah, Steel has a daughter or a niece who may have taken over for him. And John Stewart was romantically linked to L.A. TV personality Tawny Young just before he got involved with Katma Tui.

Oh, and shit, Black Lightning's daughter, Thunder, is also black, but didn't feel the need to declare such in her nomme de guerre.

WOWWWWW they're killing Damage. And the Ray. And the Phantom Lady, who's been an embarrassment for years (UNLIKE POWER GIRL). And Black Condor. Why not just call it INFINITE HOUSECLEANING EXCERCISE and be done with it?

Poor Uncle Sam even gets a disparaging caption or two to rubbish him before his grisly murder. Why do you hate America, Blue Beetle?

Vic Fluro, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

The Batman/Wonder Woman/Superman bit reminded me of Legends. I hope they have to fight Giant Robot Dogs.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I sense a return to separate Earths, because the Freedom Fighters were cool when they were fighting Nazis...1975!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't it be REALLY COOL if the villain behind this Infinite Crisis thing was Hitler. Or maybe the Antimonitor with Hitler's brain. Or Dan Jurgens with Hitler's brain. Or an alliance between Hitler and Darkseid.

iodine (iodine), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

what the hell is infinite crisis anyway? those preview pages look terrible!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

Infinite Crisis = continuity-cleaning boggins that you won't need to worry about if you don't give a rat's ass.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

That would be ha-larious if DC's actually killing off all the characters they're losing rights to.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

Don't my bad grammar mind.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

I understand that Wonder Women is renumberign from 1. Which can only mean one thing.

Wonder Woman Must Die (again). Really arsing up the film.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Even though I'm not reading this, I have a perverse fascination with what the hell is going on - could someone explain to me what superman/batman/wonderwoman are fighting about? is it still those mindwipes? also what's all this crap with supergirl and powergirl? (who is powergirl anyways?)... are there any cosmic entities involved a la zero hour or whatever that can change the continuity? and actually are there still continuity problems; i thought zerohour cleaned that up

dave k, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

also: is this the same supergirl who was dating the red-headed, australian lex luthor? okay, sorry for the barrage of questions; it's been building up for a while

dave k, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

i thought zero hour cleaned that up
i thought crisis cleaned that up
i thought black lois lane cleaned that up
i thought gardner fox cleaned that up
i thought seduction of the innocent cleaned that up
i thought batman's boner cleaned that up

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Batman's boner created the mess in the first place.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Okay.
Batman v. Superman v. Wonder Woman
the mindwipes might be at play, but that's more to do with Batman v. JLA, but here's a rundown of SINS.
Batman: Created the Brother Mark I (aka Brother Eye) Satellite to spy on superfolks who played with his brains. Maxwell Lord IV (aka Max Lord aka the Black King aka Hoobastank) took over U.S. Gov't Espionage Agency Checkmate, and then stole Batman's Eye In The Sky and used to direct the OMAC (aka Observational Metahuman Activity Cocksuckers aka One Man Army Corps) robo-humans (essentially, OMAC is a computer virus descended from the Brainiac 13 nanobots that turns 3 million or so regular folks into One-Eyed Monsters). So Batman is responsible for the big OMESS.
Wonder Woman: Killed Maxwell Lord after Lord was using his menstrual/mental powers to control Superman.
Superman: Is a douchebag and no one really ever liked him to begin with.

Supergirl v. Power Girl
Power Girl thought she was Superman's cousin from Krypton. Then a younger, cuter girl of more modest mammarial modules showed up with the EXACT SAME STORY. Only the younger girl knows Kryptonese. So WHO IS POWER GIRL? Only her hairdresser knows for sure. And her hairdresser is the PSYCHO-PIRATE (who has absolutely ZERO nautical skills).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and the current Supergirl just showed up and has no apparent connection to the Matrix Supergirl of the Pocket Universe (who cavorted with the Hirsute Lex Luthor Clone) or the other Supergirl about whom I know nothing.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Superman's douchery also has something to do w/ the mindwipes (cf. insinuations that he knew the JLA was wiping minds and DID NOTHING) (except maybe make The Sad Identity Crisis Face).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Exactly. What did he know and when did he know it?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Also Superman stole Batman's stapler in the watchtower.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Thank you Huk-L; did the matrix supergirl from pocket universe die or what? And how long has PowerGirl been around - I think she was in Kingdom Come, so does that make her a classic character?

dave k, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what happened to the Matrix Supergirl from the Pocket Universe.
Power Girl was introduced in the 70s as a new member of the Earth-2 Justice Society. There, she was indeed Superman's cousin from Krypton.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

and she stayed in continuity after the original crisis?

dave k, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

She was reintroduced in a 4-issue miniseries that I didn't read, but apparently claimed she was actually the granddaughter of pre-sinkhole Atlantean wizard Arion sent to the current era to protect her from Arion's evil wizard brother Potsie (or something). This has been since debunked, like the girl from Krypton claims. Power Girl also did time in the early 90s Justice League Europe where she got TWO new costumes, both amazingly hideous. During that time (around Zero Hour) she got pregnant BY MAGIC!!! and gave birth to a magickal baby that seems to have been properly swept under The Crisis Rug.
Lately, she's been hanging out with the JSA, and in the recent Supergirl #1, it was discovered that like opposite poles of magnets, Power Girl and Supergirl give off a type of feedback when they come into proximity of one another, usually resulting in berserker rage with hithertofore unseen powers for Power Girl.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

The villain should definitively be the Antimonitor with Hitler's brain, and they defeat him with...TINY FOOTPRINTS IN THE BRAIN!.

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Say, wasn't that Grant Morrison's Rock of Ages thing for how the Atom beats Darkseid?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

hithertofore unseen powers for Power Girl.

Girl power, perhaps?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Sort of...actually he zapped Darkseid's brain. He fried it and died doing it.

One of the best moments in Morrison's JLA.

Choice quote I'm stealing from a blogger:

"The good new is, and I guarantee you this, when we’re on the other side of the CRISIS, those days [of dark super-heroes] are GONE. Just gone. We’re sick to death of heroes who are not heroes, we’re sick to death of darkness. Not that there’s no room, not that Batman should act like Adam West, but that won’t be the overall feeling. After all this stuff, after everything shakes down, we’re done with heroes being dicks. No more we screwed each other and now we must pay the consequences. No, we’re super-heroes and that’s what we do. Batman’s broken. Through no ONE person’s fault, but he’s a dick now. And we’ve been told we can fix that."

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I thought Superman was the dick.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Batgirl will walk!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 23 September 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm having trouble thinking of any big superheroes in the DC Universe who aren't dicks and haven't been killed off or darkened by the UNRELENTING CRISIS!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Batgirl will become Batman. Er, somehow.
