Why Rucka wished to do physical harm upon me -- WonderCon 2004 report

Day 1:

After my usual getting-lost-on-the-way-there routine, I settle in and get to doing some bin-diving, in search of the now legendary "Legends of the Dark Knight #54." Unfortunately, after checking out probably 6-7 booths, it would seem that other people have the same idea that I have, that this Mignola character has some cachet.

While looking through the bins, I'm also on the lookout for discounted trades, and my haul includes: Top Ten vol. 1; Daredevil vol. 4; Goodbye Chunky Rice and Queen & Country vol. 4, all at 20-30% off.

Sketchwise, I only got two artists since I was busy losing money, Judd Winick and Darwyn Cooke. Judd did a very quick Barry Ween, and as for weekend darling Darwyn (on top of having the program cover be his drawing of Wonder Woman, he's the headline guest -- billed over Steranko even!), I asked him to do Dead Girl from X-Statix, but somehow he heard it (I suppose) as U-Go Girl aka Edie Sawyer. His was of course the Big Long Line, and the probable cause for why my legs are today so awfully sore.

But it was about Rucka on Friday. He was on a DC panel that was all about Gotham (also Brubaker, Devin Grayson and Judd). I come in late, and then, taking a cue from our own Martin Skidmore, I begin to ask the writers, basically, what it's like to write a one-dimensional character like Batman. (To be fair to Martin, I obviously got the concept backwards.) Cut to: me trying to extricate myself ("I mean, you know, some HYPOTHETICAL character!"), and Rucka getting out of his chair and playing to give me a run and Brubaker having to restrain him. Good times. (At least I've upped my visibility so that they'll recognize me when I make my eventual push into the industry!)

All in good fun, of course, I later chatted with him about Q&C very briefly (he rilly rilly liked Mr. Britney Spears/J. Alexander's art too!).

However, on the drive home, I kept nearly dozing off.

Day 2 (to-day!)

I started off with the intention of getting tonnes of sketches and autographs, but lunch and much of the time spent in Rucka-related (sometimes literally!) panels and my tired feet deep-sixed that whole idea.

I started off doing volunteer work, and by the time my shift was over, I was hongry and went for lunch, and once I finally made it onto the floor, it was 2pm, and the first of the panels I wanted to sit in on (the Oni Press one) had just started. Rucka, Jen Van Meter, Ted Naifeh and two editor guys -- but there was almost no crowd there!!! I think 8 people max at a single time. So I got to ask and find out that the for-me long-awaited Everest story w/ Scott Morse is looking like late-summer/early-autumn, that the upcoming Q&C novel is the answer to my "Will there ever be a Q&C version of 'For [sic] Her Majesty's Secret Service'?" question, and that the reason he and JVM's British is so good is because they went to the UK and asked the kindly folk there how they talked (to paraphrase VERY loosely). At the end, I got JVM to sign a library copy of Hopeless Savages.

Later, I went to the Rucka-highlight panel. Not quite as memorable for news (or just because I'm more tired), but he's quite a funny guy in person. I also sat in briefly at the JVM-highlight panel, and samewise with her -- quite funny. Interesting bit, she was getting pressed for time by the next bunch of panel people, and started tidying up the chairs onstage while still answering questions. Cute!

Interspersing/following these panels I hunted about for artists who'd do sketches. I wanted Buzz and Michael Bair to do them, but they were already busy with commission sketches so all I could ask for was autographs. Still, Buzz did do a nat little icon by his name on the cover of Kabuki. There also was Ryan Sook (who lives in the same city as me! We swapped restaurants!) of BPRD/Hellboy/Hawkman fame, and he did my long-awaited Dead Girl sketch. Michael Kaluta: kind of embarrassing, I gave him my Death Gallery to autograph, but apparently I'd already gotten him to sign it last year. Didn't keep me from asking him to do a Kabuki, though. Near the end of the day, I braved going into the self-published/micro-indie corridor and JamaicaD's art really caught my eye, and she did yet another Kabuki for me (with the postscript saying that she "♥ Kabuki too"). Bought some stuff cos it's really cute 'n gothy! < /twee>

Oh yeah, and I was surprised to see Pia Guerra signing/sketching too! I didn't bring any Y, plus by the time I found out she was there, she was about wrapping up. Still, she rushed off a VERY quick Ampersand -- ee eee!

Btw, no Glen Danzig/Pikachu story this time.

Also, Darwyn was really stoked to sign his pinup for Madman, and Sook expressed great admiration for Allred in general. Allred's big pimpin'!

I'll get scans for delectation when I can.

"Yeah, yeah, I remember you! You're the one that didn't know a damn thing about Batman! How's it feel being stoopid?!?"

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 2 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(Greg Rucka, after Leeee introduces himself as the "Congogorilla guy".)

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 2 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

No day 3 for me, as I was too tired and certain plans fell through.

It did give me the chance to scan my sketches, such as they are.

Did you tell Rucka how much I like Gotham Central? Did you? Huh? Did you?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I read that Gotham Central trade over the weekend, it's great. The 'twist' in the second case was pretty telegraphed, but still pulled off well. I suppose this means I'll have to buy the rest of the singles to catch up.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what I was thinking too.
Rucka & Brubaker obv. used Homicide: Life on the Street as a template, which tickles me.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I never made it because I am crap. :(

But Leee puts up with me nonetheless.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Rucka only wanted to slap Huck around a little bit.

@d@m, no fuss at all! PS2 ahoy one of these weekends!

And as advertised, Jen Van Meter's autograph of the library copy of Hopeless Savages (the idea of which she was tickled at, and she was also obv. happy about having her book carried here):

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

that's cool

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you tell Judd that he came across like a sanctimonious twat on The Real World but that it was patently obvious he couldn't really be like that, otherwise Pam would never have married him?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I still can't get my head around the whole Judd Winick thing. Next thing you'll be telling me Puck plays bass for Green Day.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Rucka repped Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. The man has taste.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah from RW:Miami used to work for Wildstorm (I believe as an editor).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought she was a colorist.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Could very well be, I don't really remember.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well then.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, according to Google she used to be an editor on Gen13.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

FITE

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe she is an editing colorist?
