Here's an extensive and fascinating collection of his non-Cerebus stuff I've just come across:

"My Neil Gaiman Story" in particular is pretty funny.

I have a logo Dave did for Cat Yaronwoodie's* "Fit to Print" column circa "High Society." (It's a cartoon of Cat hectoring Cerebus for a logo, with her daughter Althea hanging onto her skirt and sucking her thumb; the daughter is wearing a t-shirt that says "DEAN.") Of all the things I clipped and saved and eventually lost from late 70s/early 80s TBG/CBG, this is one of the things I hung onto. Anyway, I just emailed the guy behind this site to see if he wanted a scan of it.

*yes, I know how it's really spelled and pronounced.

Crazy fucker sure can draw.

Wow--this stuff is fascinating. Some of it is fascinatingly _bad_, but the later stuff is mostly amazing--that Will Eisner tribute page is just incredible. (That lettering! The aspirated H's!)

I read yr piece in the Believer today while at work, Doug (can I call you Doug?). Made me think I am missing out by not reading beyond Jaka's story.. but not quite enough to justify the $$$

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Nobody who knows better calls me Doug...

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 22 September 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

The Nine/Rose one is great.

Most of that is him weirdly perving over the companions, to be fair.

haha I spent a few minutes going "why the hell is he going on and on about how hot the companions are oh right, Dave Sim"

AMERICA IS ABOUT RESSLING (DJP), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

I read Cartmel's Through Time a couple of months ago and was v amused to see him grumbling about Aldred's beauty not being framed well by her hair and jacket, having just seen Sim's comments

Don't want to be all Cap'n Save-a-Dave here, but I was swapping emails with him about this (that's something I thought I'd never be able to say) when we were trying to close out the rewards for the High Society Kickstarter that because he knew nothing about it he was being sent reference photos. He actually sort of says as much in the comments on the Wet Vet/Tegan picture linked up there.

(Full story - the guy who had been doing it bailed out and just sent Dave a box of stuff saying that's what's left and I think it goes to these people...anyway, it looked like some of my stuff was missing, and I had seen the Tegan cover by then, so said if he wanted to do me a Hartnell & Susan which would suit his use of b&w then he could take as long he liked and it'd be a fair swap. Dave's response was that he had no idea who any of the individual Doctors were and he was sent half a dozen reference photos to choose from.)

He still doesn't have the Internet at home btw, but he does use it at a coffee shop once a week.

This reminds me I still haven't put up my request sketches from the Kickstarter. Will do it today.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 07:00 (twelve years ago)

He does mention GISing a lot for the IDW covers, including in that first link

>:( at Ryall for sending a 5Docs shot if it was him, then

¬╡▫ ▫╞⌠ (sic), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 07:07 (twelve years ago)

though maybe appropriate given the Hurndallesque stand-in at the end of Name Of The Doctor!

¬╡▫ ▫╞⌠ (sic), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 07:08 (twelve years ago)

Dug through the emails and he was definitely sent it...

RE: DOCTOR WHO, I'm seriously considering doing the first four DOCTORS on my own and using the IDW "Prisoners of Time" logo and then auctioning the unpublished originals with Heritage. Of course, that depends on the DOCTOR covers that I did selling for a good price through Heritage. In that case you would have the same chance as everyone at them. Starting bid: $1. I'm also supposed to be doing all 12 DOCTORS as floating Jack Kirby heads on a variant cover of #12.

I can't even picture the DOCTOR you're talking about. I don't know them by name, just by number from the photo selections Chris Ryall sent me. The only one I knew was the one with the long scarf and brillo pad hair. Baker something? And he was the fourth, I think. So that's one I missed. Deni used to watch the show when he was the current incarnation.

Actually I've got good photo reference from IDW -- they started with DR #1 but 1-4 were already done by the time I signed on. I just got a bunch of BBC DR. WHO HEADS (that sounds grisly) for the cover of #12. We'll see how it goes.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 07:13 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, he said above he googled for Davison and Tegan because he hadn't received his reference from IDW yet.

¬╡▫ ▫╞⌠ (sic), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 07:31 (twelve years ago)

OK, so as part of the Kickstarter I was entitled to 4 head and shoulders pictures of anything from Dave. I was kind of drawing a blank, but then it struck me that it was the Diamond Jubilee year and Canada's part of the Commonwealth, so the Queen and Prince Philip from back then and now would be a cool set. Dave agreed and, frankly, knocked it out of the park...

Particularly like old Phil.

Yeah, that's my favourite too.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 10:59 (twelve years ago)

Those are awesome. I feel like old Phil and Dave would probably get on.

I used to have a Lord Julius sketch from '93 that got lost somewhere in my life. Oh well :/

ha ha

yeah, those are great - did you ask for them as aardvarks or was that a surprise?

¬╡▫ ▫╞⌠ (sic), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 12:55 (twelve years ago)

Asked for them as aardvarks. I has seen a couple of things he had done at lower pledge levels turning other comics characters into aardvarks and thought this would tie together his past with his present love of photo-realism in a fun way.
