It needs its own thread really -

What on Earth is Frank Miller up to?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

is Brutally Brutally Brutal the title of his latest comic?

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

He's making money. Kid. I'M BATMAN. Grrrrr.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

He's scared. I'm glad he's scared. I wanted him to be scared. "Scared yet, kid?"

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

I kinda like the fact that B&R sucks in this way.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

If FM wants to make a corny spaghetti western, SO BE IT!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought you were all exaggerating on the shipping thread until I read it.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

ARE YOU SCARED YET?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

< SWOON >

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was a very funny comic which would delight and entertain anyone except that tiny section of its audience who actually like Batman.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Ha - maybe that's why I like it (or, more specifically, I have no problem w/ it).

Maybe "Frank Miller" is actually Peter Milligan exacting revenge on DC for shitcanning Human Target.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

This is making me think I should get it, but I don't want to give him my hard-earned money.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 19 September 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

If my gmail is working tonight Vic I will try and send you it. You will like it A LOT.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

The first issue didn't thrill me...

Vic Fluro, Monday, 19 September 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

The first issue was boring lingerie ad nonsense, this on the other hand is very amusing.

BRUTAL.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

It'll read better in the trade, I bet.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

The trade. In the trade. It'll read better. The trade.

Better.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

STUBBLE.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

I CAN'T DECIDE IF I SHOULD KEEP READING THIS OR NOT.

(Read. I can't decide. Should it be read? Or not? I can't read etc.)

On one hand, it's awful and I don't want to pay money for it, thus making it into a "smash hit!" and making Miller all smug, whether he's taking the piss or not.

On the other hand, it's getting pretty hilarious, and I want to be in on the joke.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

I want to be in on the joke too! It seems substantially different from the "Ribs - snapping. Lung - bursting. Must. Stay. Conscious." gag of yore.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 19 September 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

What weirds me out the most about this is that they couldn't do this on a MONTHLY schedule?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Also, the shirtless Afred/Vicki Vale splash is my new wallpaper.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

My er usual suppliers don't have this, so if someone were to gmail it, that'd be lovely.

http://static.flickr.com/28/44473725_402cccff65.jpg

So hard to believe that this whole thing isn't Frank Miller having a laugh at Jim Lee's expense.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, "Hey Jim, you're the hottest selling artist in comics. How about 18 pages of the same two images?"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

"I'm the goddamn Batman is who I am, ya putz! Shee, if my sweet ol' Aunt Petunia could be around to hear dis!"

Vic Fluro, Monday, 19 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

"I's the b'y that builds the ships, and I's the b'y that sails 'em."

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I wonder how differently this would read with Kyle Baker (or insert whimsical artist of your choice) art.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Now I know why I like it! It's like FM is taking loopy sci-fi closet Batman and overlaying grim-&-gritty trappings (gruffness, stubble, stuff blowing up). I don't think this would "work" if the artist wasn't playing it straight.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

OMG it was BRUTAL. BRUTAL. It was just BRUTAL. I SAW IT. I READ EVERY PAGE.

Funnyish... in that this version of Batman is just utterly insane and a bit of a pedo. But not exactly good, and not SO awful it's hilarious.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 19 September 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

And yet hilarious all the same.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Maybe my expectations are too high after the giant scorpions.

But it was still BRUTAL. SO BRUTAL. CAN'T LET HIM GRIEVE!! Oh what am I doing? BE STILL MY LOVELY WARD.

"It's like he's doing some lameass CLINT EASTWOOD impersonation"

It's funny. Really funny. The comic, that is. Funny.

I even cracked a rib laughing. A rib. Cracked. Shattered. To pieces. But I have to go on.

Can't help feeling Miller's not only making fun of Batman, but also of himself!!!!

iodine (iodine), Saturday, 15 October 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

"Beautiful. Like EDGAR ALLAN POE'S sweet LENORE, before her small COUGH brought a spot of BLOOD to her lip and the poet KNEW she was PLAGUED. DOOMED."

"My face STRETCHES like it's made out of SILLY PUTTY."

He is taking the piss, isn't he?

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Saturday, 15 October 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

He's totally taking the piss and it's totally funny and fun. Like watching an iceberg try to dance. Tom OTM in every single post upthread.

You might've seen the following here (HELLO RICH JOHNSTON), but I just have to retype this:

"OK, Jim. I'm shameless. Let's go with an ASS SHOT. Panties detailed. Balloons from above. She's walking, restless as always. We can't take our eyes off her. Especially since she's got one fine ass."

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

What I want to know is...is this in re: ASSBATS #1 or is there more lady-ass in ASSBATS future?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

It's in #1 for damn sure. *swoooooon*

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they put out the #1 sketchbook dealie last week, and there was probably a script in the back. Probably because I was too busy ogling the panties.

bcz the islamic world isn't het up enough already about comics.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

No offence to F. Miller, I'm sure he's a fine guy and all that, but wouldn't making Batman a devout Muslim be far more interesting than having him fight them? I mean, if anyone understands a jihad, it's Batman.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Gosh, I hope news & backlash re: this nonsense delays the release of BKV's GN about Iraq, The Pride of Baghdad!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

You hope it DOES delay? I was thinking that looked really cool. Why am I wrong?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

This could use a "gosh":

"It used to be that you were proud to stand up against what was wrong. Now the media and others seem to think it's hipper to serve on your knees rather than to stand and fight."

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

This as well (which is from the actual column, not the msg bd dogpile):
Moon Knight and Green Arrow are characters that should still be fed to the readers in small portions. SAYS THE GUY WHO WROTE A GUY GARDNER MONTHLY!!!

Somewhere, in a deep, dark, Lazarus Pit, Ra's Al Ghul feels unappreciated.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Was Ra's even mentioned in either of the Dark Knight books?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think so ... he wasn't as big a deal at the time (of DKR), was he? I think of him as a 90s archvillain.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 16 February 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

He kinda had his 70s moment and then one appearance in the 80s (Son of the Demon), and then what? Nothing until KnightFall?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 16 February 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I think that 80s GN (BATMAN GET THE SEX) came out after DKR, tho!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 16 February 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

And I guess he's also sort of got a bit of moral ambiguity, since he's an environmentalist AS WELL as a terrorist, and he and Batman have always had the kind of buddy-stabby-buddy relationship that Moore imposed on Batman/Joker in KJ, and Batman tends to take his shirt off whenever RAG is around (Thunder chunks vs. LOVE GOD).

I'm so worried about that sharp angle connecting her torso to her chestal region.

WHERE THE NIPPLE AT?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

Did somebody snap her?

Also, does she have some dirt on her undercarriage? I wouldn't put it past Franklin.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

So this will make 3 out of 5 covers (which is faulty, since every issue has a bunch of variant covers) with superchix.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 23 April 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

ILC has a no-slash policy?

I finally figured out what's going on in that BATASS #5 cover.

c(''c) (Leee), Sunday, 23 April 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

Please share your interpretation with the rest of the class.

I think the spattering on the background is either blood from her broken torso or from her arms (which appear to have been removed).

Is this supposed to be Wonder Woman? If so, who broke her? And how?!?

BRUTAL.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 23 April 2006 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 23 April 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

She's wearing some kind of corset/armmor, which I initially thought was her skin, whereas the pink was her spandex outfit. That's why there's that corner where her navel would be.

A REVELATION NOT UNLIKE THE PAYOFF OF INFINITE CRISIS, HUH?
