This looks good, it seems to be intended as a kind of primer to alt. comics (a mix of old and new material from R. Crumb, Dan Clowes, Los Bros Hernandez, Adrian Tomine and others). Anyone going to buy this? ISTR that a lot of people over on ILE dislike McSweeney's, but this issue looks pretty worthwhile.

"essays from Michael Chabon, Ira Glass, John Updike, Chip Kidd, and others"

eep.

I'll pick it up. I realize McSweeny's is basically pretentious horseshit but they've always had good taste in comics...

Plus, I love Chris Ware's art and stories.

I believe this will mark the first McSweeney's issue I will buy. (I received a gift subscription a couple of years ago and thus have read several issues, but I have never bought any with my own money.) Having a nice hardcover edition of comix by all those fine folks is WORTH IT.

Indeed. What's the deal, is McSweeney's available in bookstores or do you have to order it? I haven't cared until now.

I haven't seen it in straight-up bookstores (although it might just sell out fast/be underordered, since that was true of Locus too), but they carry it at Tower Records and Virgin Megastore for some reason.

Here's their list of stores that offer their publications. Otherwise, yah, I think you gotta order it online.

three months pass...
I finally got around to reading this.

A lot of it is really good, and a lot didn't click. I hadn't read any Love & Rockets before and I'd like to read more. Those selections are pretty dark though, does most of the series have that tone?

I was surprised by how much I liked some of the twee indie autobio/relationship comics. A couple of them went way over the emo edge for me, but I'm probably going to pick up an issue of Optic Nerve, for example.

I also realized that I really don't like that certain school of Robert Crumbish, 1920's animation-looking underground comics. Something about the art style just makes me feel vaguely nauseous.

Sounds like too much emo for me too. Do you mean with 1920's animation style featuring heavy black-lined talking animals? I find this headache inducing as well, and the reason I have never wanted to read "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"

Yeah, exactly. I just can't hang with it.
