when arguments like "the grunge guys were all amazing singers with great technique" come around, it makes me weep for how poor music education in this country is

being able to growl in tune does not make you a great singer

growling in tune is not the worst way for an untalented singer to approach it tbh

My favorite punk vocalist is H.R. -- no idea if he's a good singer or not though.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I would say he is a great singer, personally; a little nasal at times in his technique but it's a very distinctive, evocative sound (if not the most flexible, but then again he's not doing a lot that requires being nimble)

i want to talk about killing joke extremities etc but i dont want to deal with the overload of "lol alexnyc <3s killing joke wtf omg?!??!" in the search function.

the Kreayshawn adulation just reminds me that most (if not all) guys have a type which will make them excuse practically any old shit

I have yet to hear Foster The People and I'm holding onto that for as long as I can

sorry let me amend that:

the Kreayshawn adulation on ILM just reminds me that most (if not all) guys have a type which will make them excuse practically any old shit, plus ppl younger than me have no taste and won't get off my lawn *shakes walker*

how condescending of me to say I'm old and out of touch with what people like

i meant more the thing about how we must have crushes on the artist vs. it being a well constructed song from a distinct personality but w/e thats not for this thread

funky house septics (D-40), Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I agree it's not for this thread but the point is that I am speaking as a knowingly unreliable narrator, or IOW stop taking everything so seriously sometimes it is just joeks

like yes, I honestly am not that big on Kreyashawn, but no I don't actually think every guy who does like her only does so because they want to bone her

Something about Kreyashawn's voice is nails-on-chalkboard to me. Like, if she were somewhere merely talking to her friends in that voice, I would have to leave the room.

listening to Screamadelica for the first time in about... 18 years?

I don't hate "Movin' On Up" as much as I used to, but I still hate it.

"Slip Inside This House" is still awesome tho

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i am going to mention for the 500th time in my life that there are various tracks from this album in the early 90s cindy crawford workout video
pretty sure the warm up was "movin on up" but not sure iirc

hahaha that is amazing

trying to imagine Cindy sweating it out to "Higher Than The Sun"

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 15:26 (thirteen years ago) link

btw I made it 4 songs into Screamadelica before skipping it altogether

np: Dummy, which is just awesome

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 15:28 (thirteen years ago) link

she does
well, she did at least
i remember thinking that i knew something that most viewers/users of that workout video didn't know, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for radu's challenging (painful) workout
amazon reviews show that i was probably accurate

MUSICAL CHOICE is not the usual instrumental used in most videos; her choice is similar to her other video. Credits of musical selections are listed at the end, most songs performed by Primal Scream, Seal contributes "Crazy", "Ice" by Daniel Lanois, "State of Shock" Revenge and "Dis Moi Dis Moi" by Mitsou. It's unique and refreshing.

WAHT wau

i am not sure i get primal scream most of the time

really the only songs of theirs I can deal with are "Loaded" and "Slip Inside This House"

although I think maybe I also liked "Swastika Eyes"?

http://open.spotify.com/track/4YLNn4UXFxQ8MpkhKfJA1O <-- yeah I dig this

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:05 (thirteen years ago) link

"slip" is an elevators song, so that's why it's good

I am not nearly as into Pulp as I was in 1997/1998, kind of to my surprise

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:09 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha i am sorta into pulp for the first time in my life starting about oh a year ago? bought that brit box basically to take myself to reeducation camp for all the stuff i refused to listen to when it was current

Did math, .8181818181 (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:10 (thirteen years ago) link

and by "into pulp" i guess i mean "i have finally heard common people and enjoy it"

Did math, .8181818181 (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:11 (thirteen years ago) link

<3 13th floor e's for all time

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:13 (thirteen years ago) link

ha I did something similar around 2000 with the Napster explosion, and even then there were bands I really should have been totally up on years earlier whose catalogs I only really started EXPLORING like, 3-4 years ago (example: zomg Siouxsie and the Banshees have albums besides Peepshow, Tinderbox, Hyaena and Superstition??? WHO KNEW oh wait, everybody knew that)

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:13 (thirteen years ago) link

oh btw "Common People" is still great, it's just a lot of the other songs on Different Class are kind of drippy and limp

kind of like how on This Is Hardcore half the songs are awesome dark seduction pieces and half the songs are Jarvis wanking into a microphone
