Rubyredd, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

I have a co-worker who is part may-ori. She's been in Australia a long time but she still has an intense accent.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

estela do you roll your r's like other south islanders?

Rubyredd, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know where she's from.

W4LTER, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

nui = big

eg puku = stomach so calling someone pukunui = calling them fatty

no ruby, that r rolling is just a southland thing.

(xps all over town.)

estela, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

my little bro has a southland accent and has never even been there.

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

somewhat boring Maori anecdote time:

I remember a couple of years ago i was out drinking in Surfers and my mate was being a drunken fuckwit and this Maori girl came up to me and said 'if you guys don't leave now my boyfriend's going to be angry'. and she pointed at this group of 5 or so hueg Maori dudes sitting at this table. And i said 'ok' and we left.

W4LTER, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

probably a wise decision. one of them might have been jake the muss.

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

lol jake the muss!
that cat was fast as lightning.

W4LTER, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

El Tomboto, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

El Tomboto, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

do you guys have burritos? how do you ask for a burrito in your language

El Tomboto, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

their burritos are so wrong (love you guys, hate the burritos). the screw up the beans and then there's no point

jergïns, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah burritos are not as big a deal as, say, 'babs down here tbh.

W4LTER, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

RR what is burrito/kebab ratio in NZ?

W4LTER, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

i think there is like one or two mexican food places in welly. but KEBABS ARE EVERYWHERE. jesus there's a kebab shop like every third shop.

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

i've never had a burrito. but then again i hate beans. also i think the last time i had a kebab was a few years ago.

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

I had 1 burrito about 2 years ago coz my Venezuelan friend wanted one.

W4LTER, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

i love beans.
you have to make your own mexican food here, no one knows how to do it properly, it is all terrible.

estela, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah my housemate lives on that gear.

W4LTER, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

Also my other housemate (American) is always going on about how we pronounce it quesedilla. I tell her to not let it worry her.

W4LTER, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

i bet that the burritos there are better than the burritos i had in ireland

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

the irish ones should really be called bullshitarritos

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

of course then no one would buy them

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

or if they did, they would deserve what they got.

sorry, carry on

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

come to nz and have hangi food. it is delicious!

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

for americans: a hangi is basically when you heat a bunch of big stones, dig a big hole, put the stones in and then wrap up all your food in damp cloths and put it in baskets on the stones and then refill the whole with dirt and leave to steam for hours.

funny story: i have quite a few maori relatives, and when my mum married my stepdad they insisted on doing a hangi for the reception. my uncle, mr big-hangi-expert, was running the whole thing. anyway, we get back to my nana's place after the ceremony, the hangi gets dug out, my uncle just about bursting with pride... and then we discover none of the food is cooked, because the stones weren't hot enough and it wasn't left in long enough. so mum had to go home in her wedding dress, pick up her enormous microwave (this was around 1985) and cook the whole hangi in batches in it. and it was all caught on video.

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

lol, there are so many hangi disaster stories. my favourite hangi food is the potatoes, they are always so good.

estela, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

yes, my favourite too! reheated the next day, fried with onions and gravy. hangi pork is pretty awesome when done right.

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

haere ra, i have to go to work.

estela, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

e noho ra, estela!

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

i always imagined estela as being above the need to have a job

jergïns, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

i always think that we here at the itr should just get paid for being awesome

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

except for HI DERE who is not to be trusted

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

agreed

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

wow, living in NZ is like being a full-time girl scout.

arohanui, everybody!

lxy, Friday, 8 February 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

sexy grown-up girl scout with a cute accent

jergïns, Friday, 8 February 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

i want to be that. except for the part about camping with a bunch of 10 year old girls, which is the worst part of girl scouts.

lxy, Friday, 8 February 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

i never did girl guides (which is like girl scouts). all the female socialising freaked me out. but i was marching girl!!

Rubyredd, Friday, 8 February 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

what is marching girl plz

lxy, Friday, 8 February 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

i always thot maori was pronounced "maadi"

electricsound, Friday, 8 February 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

lxy, a marching girl (i was 8) dresses up in a little mini tartan skirt, a tunic top with braiding and shit, a special hat (mine was like a tall cylinder with a visor) and knee high white marching boots, and then we all march around in special formations to marching music and stuff. then we get strictly judged and graded and if we're good (we weren't, we were like the 2nd worst team in the country) we get medals.

i still have my medals.
