HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

i thought this was going to be about buttholes

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

i have never heard this song

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

so maybe that is what this is about

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

ok wtf how have you never heard this song

Did you not buy/hear this album?????

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

You were a bigger DM fiend than I was! wtf

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

i rejected the depeche mode after songs of love and devotion made me really angry and irritable by being terribly terribly boring

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

I think we have this album, but I'm going to have to check. Must study before I can respond to poll.

I don't remember anything about Songs of Love and Devotion except that we have it... and that's it. Apparently it didn't make much of an impression. (At the same time, I'm pretty sure we saw Depeche Mode right after they released that album. BLURRY MEMORIES)

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

Okay that was stupid for several reasons:

1. Songs of Faith and Devotion has "I Feel You" on it, which is flat-out one of their best songs.
2. Ultra and Exciter both have awesome songs on them, including "Useless" (!), "Barrel of a Gun", "Home"(!!), "Dream On", "Shine", "When the Body Speaks", "Freelove" (!!!!), and "I Am You".
3. Playing The Angel is EASILY their best album since Music For The Masses. If you haven't heard "Precious", you are foolish.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

If you haven't heard "Precious", you are foolish.

;_;

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

I am so sadly behind on my homework, and now you're adding more?!

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

I thought this was going to be about the John Carpenter movie. :(

jessie monster, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

if ilx ever finds out that i am foolish WE ARE DONE FOR

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

"The Darkest Star" is the last song on the album, Sara. "Precious" is #5.

JOHN: FLEE, ALL IS KNOWN

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

ha ha ha, John, I was gonna say!

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, Dan, at some point in the next few days I will listen to this album. It should be on my iPod; I need to charge it anyway because I have about 4 hours of driving time this weekend.

Okay, okay. The kids are playing a video game and playing REALLY loudly, though. (Alex's best friend and her identical twin are over for a visit, so it's louder than usual here...)

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

"SHUT UP, KIDS! MOMMY HAS TO LISTEN TO THE INTERNET!"

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ That is basically not an exaggeration, except I'm nicer with the twins here. ;)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

xpost Somehow Dan makes *everything* sound dirty.

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

BUT, I have heard "Precious" (I liked it very much) and I'm on to "The Darkest Star."

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

"Precious" is a song Martin Gore wrote to his kids after his divorce.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to You?

We always try to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put You through...

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

Angels with silver wings
Shouldn't know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for You

If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it's Your eyes He's seeing through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

I pray You learn to trust
Have faith in both of us
And keep room in Your heart for two

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Also liked "The Darkest Star." I will listen to the entire albums in the car (iPod charging and syncing AS I WRITE THIS).

"Precious" lyrics = so depressing. Which, of course, I like.

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

(more humorously - or not? - did I tell you guys that the neighborhood kids call our house "The Divorce House?" Apparently everyone who has lived here before us has gotten divorced. We kinda think it had to do with the ugly stenciling that was on the walls, which we have mostly painted over).

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

Alex's best friend and her identical twin are over for a visit

it might be nice to let Alex's identical twin live, you know, in the house.

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

Pronouns torpedo an otherwise fine grammar joke.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

;_;

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

hahahahahahahahaha fuck

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

FOILED AGAIN

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

FLEE AGAIN

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

All this fleeing has got to do great things for your cardiovascular health, John.

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

Y U people no tell me of Depeche thread.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

Ned!!!!

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

Also, I blame Dan.

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

Eh, you got here eventually.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

This is true.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE HAVE NED

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

TIDY UP THE PLACE! HIDE THE BONGS! MAKE YERSELF PRESENTABLE!

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway about Sara's twins.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

And Jon's perfectly appropriate image posting.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

I refuse to cringe. BECAUSE I DO

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

(Also, how to make Dan jealous -- tell him I'm listening to a Shut Up and Dance song from 1995 wisely titled "The Weekend's Here" that sampled "Forget Me Nots" a couple of years before the Will Smith rework surfaced and how it's all cool and he should be listening to it right now but he isn't ha ha.

Except he doesn't care because he's off to play PS3.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it's going to be days until he resurfaces then.

Sara R-C, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

Actually soon I'm off to eat and drink with friends who don't have as large an LCD TV as I do, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SUCK IT, HIGH-ROLLER ANALYST/PHARMA SHILL

Plus I have music to learn for a concert in March.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

"Now then, we need to rearrange this Depeche album for full choir."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

Something towards the end... "Lillian"? "Nothing's Impossible"? This song?

HI DERE, Sunday, 10 February 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Lilian" is easily the best.

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 10 February 2008 07:08 (seventeen years ago)

NO IDEA! Possibly I will know by tonight, though. MAYBE

Sara R-C, Sunday, 10 February 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

Good, good...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 10 February 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, they do a cover of "John The Revalator" on this album?!

John Justen, Sunday, 10 February 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

Yup. Half-cover half lyrical rework -- keeps the melody and basic words of the chorus as a launching point. Absolutely stellar effort and further proof Gore knows what he's doing as a songwriter.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 10 February 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

i'm about a 90% Gore 10% Gahan sort of dude when it comes to DM.

John Justen, Sunday, 10 February 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

I had no clue that was a cover.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

Gahan wrote three of the songs on this ("Suffer Well", "I Want It All", "Nothing's Impossible"), one of which is one of my favorite DM songs ever (IWIA).

HI DERE, Monday, 11 February 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

Inspired by all this, I am going to relisten to the KROQ Acoustic Christmas set they did back when touring this album.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 February 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

...go Ned?!

It turns out it was Damaged People. I guess I want to forget that I'm old, and dying. Or just old or whatever.

Sara R-C, Monday, 11 February 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

(or possibly it is just that the words were super clear and thus I heard them over the wind and the engine of my car)

Sara R-C, Monday, 11 February 2008 04:08 (seventeen years ago)

Ah, another Martin vocal.

John, I think you'd really, really like "Macro".

HI DERE, Monday, 11 February 2008 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

xpost AHA!

Sara R-C, Monday, 11 February 2008 05:37 (seventeen years ago)

point of clarification - Dan, am I reading right that you like Music for the Masses more than Violator?

Actually why don't you just do us all a favor and rank your favorite DM albums from favorite to least favorite.

Sara R-C, Monday, 11 February 2008 05:41 (seventeen years ago)

Music for the Masses is better than violator

John Justen, Monday, 11 February 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

i am, however, not dan

John Justen, Monday, 11 February 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

i know you get confused about that sometimes

John Justen, Monday, 11 February 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

Black Celebration
Music For The Masses
Playing The Angel
Violator
Construction Time Again
Some Great Reward
Ultra
Exciter
Songs Of Faith And Devotion
A Broken Frame
Speak And Spell

HI DERE, Monday, 11 February 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

xpost Well, you do look identical to me. It's very confusing.

Thank you, Dan!

Sara R-C, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Dan's list OTM (well, other than the albums I haven't heard (PTA, Ultra, Exciter))

John Justen, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

It should be noted that everything from Ultra up is "awesome", Exciter and SOFAD are "great", A Broken Frame is "a bunch of good songs that make a subpar album" and Speak And Spell is "lol, fuck off".

HI DERE, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

I really have to re-listen to a lot of that; I just listened to Violator a few months ago and was like, WHOA I FORGOT HOW GREAT THIS WAS.

haha, Dan, when I looked at iTunes in my computer, Speak and Spell was the only DM album that I hadn't listened to a single song off of... ever.

Sara R-C, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

You can throw away everything on Speak And Spell except "Dreaming Of Me", "New Life", "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Just Can't Get Enough". MAYBE "Photographic" and "Puppets" if I'm feeling charitable (but I've heard infinitely better cover versions of both of those songs).

HI DERE, Monday, 11 February 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

Sara didn't ask for MY opinion on ranking DM albums but THAT'S ALL RIGHT I DON'T CARE.

(It's all on the AMG anyway.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 February 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Sara didn't spend a good chunk of high school enduring your musical recommendations!

HI DERE, Monday, 11 February 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

And she's paid for it to this day.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 February 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

in BLOOD and SWEAT and TEARS

HI DERE, Monday, 11 February 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

Happy Valentine's Day?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 February 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

funny, i had forgotten how often dan used to recommend 70's era horn bands in high school.

John Justen, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

I am certain we played my dad's Blood, Sweat & Tears album at least once; also his Vanilla Fudge album (on 45).

HI DERE, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

dan, please collectively rank the Blood, Sweat & Tears, Depeche Mode, and Vanilla Fudge albums from best to worst

John Justen, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

after that Ned has promised to rank chicago albums for us all

Fuk U

Besides, Dave Q has said he'd review all the Asia albums for us, including the endless live albums, for $1000. One day I will hold him to that.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of feel like having Ned make music recommendations to me in high school along with Dan and John would have cause some kind of cerebral hemorrhage.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

I apologize, you must have typed incorrectly:

"I kind of feel like having Ned make music recommendations to me in high school along with Dan and John would have cause some kind of cerebral hemorrhage spiritual calm and universal understanding."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm. Not a strikethrough.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

Cerebral hemorrhage, but with YOGA and MEDITATION

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

That sounds about right!

HI DERE, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

Hooray!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

I'll rank Steely Dan albums if you want me to, John.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

Don't be a tease Dan; just DO IT

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)
