i rejected the depeche mode after songs of love and devotion made me really angry and irritable by being terribly terribly boring

I think we have this album, but I'm going to have to check. Must study before I can respond to poll.

I don't remember anything about Songs of Love and Devotion except that we have it... and that's it. Apparently it didn't make much of an impression. (At the same time, I'm pretty sure we saw Depeche Mode right after they released that album. BLURRY MEMORIES)

Okay that was stupid for several reasons:

1. Songs of Faith and Devotion has "I Feel You" on it, which is flat-out one of their best songs.
2. Ultra and Exciter both have awesome songs on them, including "Useless" (!), "Barrel of a Gun", "Home"(!!), "Dream On", "Shine", "When the Body Speaks", "Freelove" (!!!!), and "I Am You".
3. Playing The Angel is EASILY their best album since Music For The Masses. If you haven't heard "Precious", you are foolish.

Yup. Half-cover half lyrical rework -- keeps the melody and basic words of the chorus as a launching point. Absolutely stellar effort and further proof Gore knows what he's doing as a songwriter.

i'm about a 90% Gore 10% Gahan sort of dude when it comes to DM.

I had no clue that was a cover.

Gahan wrote three of the songs on this ("Suffer Well", "I Want It All", "Nothing's Impossible"), one of which is one of my favorite DM songs ever (IWIA).

Inspired by all this, I am going to relisten to the KROQ Acoustic Christmas set they did back when touring this album.

It should be noted that everything from Ultra up is "awesome", Exciter and SOFAD are "great", A Broken Frame is "a bunch of good songs that make a subpar album" and Speak And Spell is "lol, fuck off".

I really have to re-listen to a lot of that; I just listened to Violator a few months ago and was like, WHOA I FORGOT HOW GREAT THIS WAS.

haha, Dan, when I looked at iTunes in my computer, Speak and Spell was the only DM album that I hadn't listened to a single song off of... ever.

You can throw away everything on Speak And Spell except "Dreaming Of Me", "New Life", "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Just Can't Get Enough". MAYBE "Photographic" and "Puppets" if I'm feeling charitable (but I've heard infinitely better cover versions of both of those songs).

Sara didn't ask for MY opinion on ranking DM albums but THAT'S ALL RIGHT I DON'T CARE.
