wife & i are in town, staying in cambridge. gotta dinner reservation at 8, but perhaps you are available for beers before or after that?
also, tell us cool things to do!
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)
Where are you eating? In Cambridge or elsewhere?
Most of the cool things I can think of to do involve going to one of a bazillion Harvard museums (particularly the natural history one) or doing the Freedom Trail, which might not work depending on the weather.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, the restaurant is in cambridge too, but we could travel if necessary
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)
Do you know where, ie Harvard Square, Central Square, Porter Square, Inman Square, other?
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)
uh...central square-ish?
134 Hampshire St Cambridge MA 02139
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
Ah. That's in between Inman Sq and Kendall Sq.
Flat-Top Johnny's is a pool place in Kendall Sq that might be fun to go to. Also there's the Cambridge Brewery (or Beerworks, I can't remember the actual name) also in Kedall Square that would be a good place to hang out. I need to see what we've committed to; I might have to sing on the radio Saturday morning, in which case I wouldn't be going out at all.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)
Also I might be puking due to a possible stomach flu.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)
Mount Auburn cemetery is in Cambridge and really cool if you like NATURE and cool mausoleums and, uh, dead people. Obviously a daytime thing. The MIT Robotics Museum is fun.
In terms of bars I'm more familiar with the Harvard/Central Square areas, and within that mostly kinda dive-y places. Grendel's Den in Harvard Sq. is pretty neat, they have their own brew.
― jessie monster, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)
oh yeah, Grendel's is great (or at least it used to be, haven't been in years)
My default Harvard Square dive is Charlie's Kitchen.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
^^^^yes.
― jessie monster, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)
there's a communism-themed place around there somewhere but I haven't been.
People's Republik on Mass Ave between Harvard and Central Sqs. It's awes! I met up with Mackro Mackro there a few years ago and another patron inexplicably waved his fist in my face in the most amiable manner possible.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)
I love People's - I went there the first night I moved to Boston! Also, I used to bartend upstairs at Charlie's.
Mookieproof - sadly not free this Friday. :-( Have a wonderful time while you're here! How long are you here for? That'll help regarding cool things to do recommendations . . .
― ENBB, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 03:54 (seventeen years ago)
good ppl of boston, when should I come for a visit
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 04:17 (seventeen years ago)
hint: do not answer "soon"
Realistically late May/early June; I tihnk all my weekend nonsense will be done by then.
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)
I have no earthly idea where I will be in late May/early June lololol.
― jessie monster, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

freedom trail sounds like a go. i hope it snows
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)
Take not of King's Chapel on the Freedom Trail; that's where the missus and I sing for pay on Sundays.
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)
Take NOTE I mean
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)
is Charlie's Kitchen much cop? I have taken note of it a number of times but never thought to go in. Oh wait, I don't go to bars anyway.
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)
what in god's name does "much cop" mean.
― jessie monster, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)
it means he is trying to score some heroin and is wondering if they have an ample supply
― John Justen, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)
it is nipply here
questions: there are charliecards and charlietickets -- who is charlie? is he related to mr t? why are none of the squares square?
― mookieproof, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)
cows are bad at math
― El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)
Tom OTM
I don't know why they're called Charlie cards, everyone here thinks that the whole thing is incredibly stupid.
Sadly I can't go out tonight because we have to entertain neighbors. ;_;
― HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)
My Big, Exciting Friday night plans in Northfield: interviewing a Chinese Carleton exchange student for school. We'll be eating mediocre Americanized Chinese food at the Mandarin Garden.
― Sara R-C, Friday, 29 February 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)
OH NOES I WROTE THAT ON THE WRONG THREAD
― Sara R-C, Friday, 29 February 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)
daer bostonians can you recommend a good breakfast place?
― mookieproof, Saturday, 1 March 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)
I KNOW THE STORY OF THE CHARLIE CARD.
once upon a time, the T sucked in the past! just like today! and someone wrote a song about a guy named Charlie who was stuck on the T forever and ever.
so in 2007 they, uh, named a card after him. BECAUSE YOU WILL BE STUCK ON THE T FOREVER.
― jessie monster, Saturday, 1 March 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)
also STEVE'S KITCHEN in allston is a good breakfast place if you have no mind for health codes and want to cross the river.
watertown diner is good too.
these are diner-y places, not fancy brunch places.
― jessie monster, Saturday, 1 March 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)
dude, if you're on the Cambridge side of the water then Kelly's in Somerville is awesome for brunch. B-Side Lounge is good too.
― Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 1 March 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, Kelly's and B-side are both good and should be near where you are!! Also, the S&S deli in Sommerville is also really good. All should be a close cab ride away but the B-side is probably within walking distance if you're near Kendall.
Charlie Cards - song was called "Charlie on the MTA" I think and was written to raise awareness about a fare increase. Jessie's right it's about some guy that couldn't get out of the T because he didn't have enough fare.
― ENBB, Saturday, 1 March 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
STEVE'S KITCHEN in allston
JM - where is that?!
Also, I went to The Pill at Great Scott last night. OMG fantastic people watching (read making fun og people and being a bitch) opportunities. Have you been?
― ENBB, Saturday, 1 March 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)
why are none of the squares square?
Ha! This drives my husband nuts!
― ENBB, Saturday, 1 March 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)
steve's kitchen is on harvard ave. beside that bbq place/across the street from blanchard's. it is a total hole-in-the-wall so it's pretty easy to miss, but delishus and cheeeap.
lol THE PILL. I have never been but obviously know people who go. :p The other week I amused myself by eating dim sum at the new place where v. majestic used to be and laughing at people walking into the Kells.
― jessie monster, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)
Ah, I know where Steve's Kitchen is but have never been. Will have to check it out.
Just noticed the new dim sum place last night. I could see how Kells people watching could be pretty good. Music at The Pill was really pretty good I'd just forgotten how much of a scene it is since I hadn't been in so long.
― ENBB, Saturday, 1 March 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)
verdict:
fleet banknorth garden: ugly building, nice place to see a game (apart from the result and the fans) b-side lounge: decent harvard book store: grebt oleana restaurant: awesome the t: okay cabs: stupid expensive cambridgeside galleria mall: ugh x 1000 winter storm: disappointing peoples republik: smelly but good. wee bartender guy was cool. if i went there regularly i would eventually be killed by a dart central kitchen: pretty good. a+ hostess for working us in without a reservation ilxors: ;_;
