Editor's Note: The entry on Orient, Oriental has been changed.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Orient, Oriental
Do not use when referring to East Asian nations and their peoples. Asian is the acceptable term for an inhabitant of those regions. Oriental rug is standard. See nationalities and races and race.
I just got this in an e-mail. Thank goodness for that clarification here in the year 2008.
(my liberal mother used the term "Oriental" recently, which surprised me. She was talking about places to get manicures (!!!)
― Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)
I am now tempted to ask people if they get Oriental manicures.
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)
An Oriental manicure?
XPOST DAMN YOU

I remember when Gay Dad came out. I saw Gay Dad at the Troubadour back in '98.
Ned, you are no Gay Dad drummer.

xpost
ech pashmina's post is o_O cos 'asian' in british-english doesn't mean east asian ('oriental') anyway.
― banriquit, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)
Which post?
Yeah, as per mark and henry, over here in britishes land "asian" = I guess "south asian" whereas "oriental" = "east asian", and it's a basic regional/ethnic descriptor with no loadedness to it that I've ever been aware of. Maybe it's a bit archaic these days.
I picked up using the term "asian" in the US sense & got into the habit of using it in online blether b/c I learned that it's a loaded term in north america and I didn't want to pointlessly fuck ppl off. TBH the only time I ever see it used over here anyway is to describe regional food in the supermarket or at the chinese takeaway, the offensive useage, describing someone as "an oriental", I don't recall ever hearing in my life.
