Thanatophobia Version 1.1

Despite Peter Chung’s and Mark Mars’ thumbs down on the Thanatophobia analysis I’ve given below (about 2 month ago), I still believe it to be a viable interpretation, not without modifications, of course. So I give you…

Thanatophobia Version 1.1

In this version, Aeon is still the male’s seminal fluid but Sybil is more than just the female’s egg; she is the female’s biological clock. Trevor, on the other hand, is the female’s desire for a career, partying, and in general, enjoying the life of a liberated woman. He is told by his compatriot that he should “get out more, see what you’re missing.” This then is what brings the two into conflict. After Sybil’s first aborted attempt, she is given a rose by an unknown person, most probably Trevor. The rose represents Linda Ronstadt’s I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, again, signifying the desire to live the exciting life as justification for the abortion. To appease Sybil, Trevor gives her spinal implants which I believe to be a contraceptive device (this part is different from my original version). He tries to woo her with sexual pleasures to keep her biological clock in check. It works but only temporarily. Sybil still has strong desires to pro-create. Trevor, thus decides to have the female’s tubes tied. This, then, is the interpretation of Sybil’s amputation.

It's funny what the subconscious inserts into a story, isn't it?

Syra (Syra), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah . . . either this dude is crazy or he's just made an extremely well-placed joke. It got a laugh out of me either way.

My god. I think you're on to something.

Peter Chung, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

I like any analysis where people are referred to a seminal fluid.

TWO THUMBS UP!!!

Joshua Aldridge, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just confused now. I thought they wanted to escape from Brenga.
:)

Chas, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

the guy is thinking... thats the main thing

quite a nice interpretation

ChristopherMichael (The Rictus), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, and plus whuddabadt Linda Ronstadt's LOVE IS A ROSE. ("Only Grows When It's On The Vine/ "Handful Of Thorns And You Know You Missed It/ "You Know It's Over When You Say The Word, 'MINE.'")

Mark Mars, Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

But anyway, Ray, I speak for my own self and not for or against you or elsewise, okay, here? I mean, wts, where the whap did I somehow manage to put the thumbs down on anything anyone said to your original post - I just checked it, okay? I was only hazarding some response to a whole big amazing scrolling body of some years-ago discussion to which I'd earlier failed to somehow manage some response or consideration!!

Mark Mars, Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

And you know what already already, I actually think you got a couple of good ideas in there, you Ray Lee, you! How you like THEM petunias?!!

(Not that I'm thumbs-sidewise-hitchhiking it to YER fkn neutron star yet there or nothin' - but, still......)

Mark Mars, Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

"(Not that I'm thumbs-sidewise-hitchhiking it to YER fkn neutron star yet there or nothin' - but, still......)"

Man I got a good laugh out of that one!

So the conveniently inviting doorway to greener grasses, which eventually garrotes Sybil, is a vagina of some sort? I guess that kinda makes sense, but I don't think I'll be able to dream sweetly tonight.

Chas, Friday, 26 May 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

^^ But I guess Sybil wont either!

Chas, Friday, 26 May 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes a Breen border defense system is just a Breen border defense system.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Saturday, 27 May 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think we can agree that everything is a least some sort of vagina.

If the Wall was a vagina though, then I suppose Sybil is also a vagina, because she didn't have the abilities to penetrate the wall. That would also mean that anyone who could penetrate the wall were a penis. (And I think we all agree Trevor has a penis shape quality to him.) This would mean that Aeon is also a penis, as is Onan. Which sort of makes sense actually. Onan has the skill only to penetrate the wall at a high risk to personal loss. This is relevant to unresourceful men who put sex on a pedestal. But Aeon and Trevor both have the resource and the confidence to cross the boarder anytime they want, and with ease!!!
Sybil is also the vagina because she's the one who is getting prodded at by the other three. Eventually Onan was prodded at by Aeon, but couldn't take another penis, AND ONE LARGER THEN HIS OWN, and was pushed back in to the dominate/submissive relationship. Unfortunately by the time Onan got back, Sybil had grown a pseudo-penis and was unsatisfied with the memory of Onan's penis personality. Unfortunately, as we all know, a pseudo-penis doesn't cut it in the real world and she got her legs chopped off.

Man, I enjoyed writing that.

Joshua Aldridge, Saturday, 27 May 2006 02:49 (nineteen years ago)

And I enjoyed reading it.

Yes, let's face it, Aeon is definitely a very big penis. Probably bigger than Trevor.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Saturday, 27 May 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

"...anyone who could penetrate the wall were a penis."

Onan was a bit of a penis, this is true.

Chas, Saturday, 27 May 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

"And I think we all agree Trevor has a penis shape quality to him."

Trevor always struck me as some sort of Swede or something (beside his phallic symbolysm. If so, much more creative than a bald blackman) I have a buddy who looks a bit trevor and he gets all the chicks (I make sure to hang around to get the left overs, god forgive me).

Chas, Saturday, 27 May 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

"I think we can agree that everything is a least some sort of vagina."

Most things in life are some type of passage. Over and over.

Chas, Saturday, 27 May 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

"...because she didn't have the abilities to penetrate the wall."

Not physically, but she doesnt know how to control her emotions. She cant remove herself emotionaly from her station. She can only brood and desire change through force of will. This leads to her failure, twice, and terribly the second time. The system is specifically designed to punish anyone different or subsersive. Fortunately there are lots of nifty implants in Aeons world, such as mechanical springs and grafted hands.

chas, Saturday, 27 May 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

You know, that's interesting (and now I'm gonna try to overthrow the comedy of this thread with a serious question): What exactly is the punishment value of an amputation machine in a world where hand grafts and mechanical limbs seem so common? That's not really the point of the episode, of course, but it's interesting to think about.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Saturday, 27 May 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

Common is relative. They are probably less common in Breen, and if her spino-thingies are any indication, surgery would probably either be too expensive, or bury her deeper into the states debt.
So I'd say the punishment is most likely much less permanent then what we would consider, but still incredibly inconvenient.

Oh, and Penismonkey.

Did that help? Penismonkey?

Excellent

Joshua Aldridge, Saturday, 27 May 2006 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

Well, just look at the importance of Luke losing his hand in the Empire Strikes Back. In that it was a symbol of lost humanity - sure he got a new hand, but it wasn't the hand he lost. It was inhuman, a reminder of how his own father had wounded him.

Sybil is literally made less human by the Bregnan state as punishment for her yearning to be free. Really, this is kind of unfortunate for everyone involved, because she kind of does it to herself, too. Just like, you know, Luke giving in to his hate and fear, Sybil is complicit in her own oppression. Plus she was boinking the figurehead of that oppression, so...

"What exactly is the punishment value of an amputation machine in a world where hand grafts and mechanical limbs seem so common?"

"...sure he got a new hand, but it wasn't the hand he lost. It was inhuman,..."

De-humanization. The more she resists, the more she is physically made into a civilized member, a piece at a time. It could eventually mutate her into the coffin "thing" that accepts the blood in "the purge".

Chas, Saturday, 27 May 2006 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

"...Oh, and Penismonkey."

I've seen a bright red boody-monkey, but not a Penis-monkey yet.
(unless you count that one from the extreme video, but I dont think that's technically a species)

Chas, Saturday, 27 May 2006 08:31 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, dear...

Mark Mars, Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

It seems we’ve even made Mark blush. ;)

Joshua Aldridge, Monday, 29 May 2006 06:11 (nineteen years ago)

"Oh, dear... "

Got me!!!

Chas, Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

"The extreme video" . . . Am I missing out on something really perverted here? Having been forum lurking on SomethingAwful for so long I'm surprised I haven't seen it yet.

(P.S. This is the best thread hijack of all time. All we need now are some humorous animated GIFs for no reason.)

your hair is good to eat, Thursday, 1 June 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
^^^

It wasn't a "penis" monkey specifically, urine monkey would be more accurate. Its usually combined with the video of another monkey who sniffs his butt and falls out of a tree. Funny stuff, even cute in a crude way.
