The Aeon Flux Movie

I visited another Aeon Flux site on the net and discovered the the original creative team of Aeon Flux will not be involved whatsoever with this movie due to Euro co-production (EEC) regulations.

Also, from the site of http://www.moviehole.net/news/3761.html, this:

"McDormand joining Paramount's Aeon Flux
Posted on Tue, 8-Jun-2004

The always versatile Frances McDormand ["Almost Famous"] is set to join Charlize Theron for the film version of Paramount Pictures' big-screen live-action adaptation of the futuristic MTV toon series “Aeon Flux”, to be directed by Karyn Kusama [“Girlfight”].

According to Variety, McDormand will portray the Handler in the film, produced by MTV Films along with Valhalla Productions, in association with Lakeshore Entertainment. Filming is slated to begin in August in Berlin for a 2005 release.

The script, written by Phil Hay [“Crazy/Beautiful”] and Matt Manfredi [“The Tuxedo”], is set 1,000 years in the future, when disease has wiped out the population save for one city. The acrobatic title character is the top operative in an underground rebellion, but when sent on a mission to kill the government's leader, she uncovers a secret making her question if she's on the right side".

Every day I think about this movie for a few infuriating minutes. On the one hand it may bring about some serious attention to the original series and cast a beautiful baby spot on her, illuminating it for what it was.....pure talent.

On the other hand the fact that they will not use the originator of the series, one Peter Chung, infuriates me. I will not see this movie. I'm sure it will be a mega downer for me if I did. Not to hear 'those' voices, not to hear 'that' music and not to expect 'the' writing, it's just too much to drop out of a films inception and expect the baby to be delivered without casualty.

Sithandra (Scaphandra?)

As far as the whole blasphemy issue goes, I'm willing to take a look. After all, Aeon has gone through many interations in the past. Why not another? It may not have some of the particular complexity of the previous versions, but it may have another. At the very least, it miht be a fun watch.

By the way, I like the casting choices, at least as far as looks go. Francis MacDormand will add some "credibility", maybe. Whatever that means. It also seems they've made a point of choosing some rather interesting faces... let's hope the atmosphere of the film supports them properly.

Ten years later, are we facing a new renaissance?

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Saturday, 28 August 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say it was a Renaissance if the original artists were involved but as they are not it seems unfair to me, to put it politely. This is their creation and it is being stolen out from under them. Contracts made with new artists that cut them off from their own work and gives the creation over to petnames in Hollywood seems really monstrous to me. I only hope MTV remakes the series and they are asked back in.

Barb e (Barb e), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno... I see art as a collaborative effort, anyhow. There can be many versions of one story, and they might even be almost unrelated. This movie won't destroy the previous works. Think of it as a Hollywood remake of a good foreign film.

And after all, like it or not, Peter did sign Aeon over to MTV long ago. It's only Peter's in spirit and not in "property". They really have no obligation to bring any of the previous artists over. It could even be thought of as a blessing to start fresh, so to speak.

I'm just playing devil's advocate, as always. I would love for the original crew to be involved, too.

(Barb, be nice.)

Peter Chung, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I have to wonder what exactly she was trying to pull off (I'm imagining the human jenga-in-motion from "Leisure").

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Theron suffered the unspecified injury while doing her own stunts in a wire-hanging action sequence, the movie's publicist, Jeanmarie Carrasco, told The Associated Press Tuesday."

Wire-fu, yay!

more

Peter Chung, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"'Aeon Flux', the movie that killed Charlize Theron."

Let's hope not, of course. But wow, what a reputation. Good? Bad? I won't say. Not many films get such reputations.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Trying to decide which to hold back from, 'how can anyone stay an atheist after this?' or 'Is Charlize Theron figuring on making more money on a related work injury suit rather than become defamed for a turkey remake of a good series.' Hmm, think I'll just go with the statement, real Aeon Flux's (Denise Poirier) don't get hurt doing flips no flops either.

Barb e (Barb e), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Actors throw their backs out, ect. all the time. My condolences to Theron, but I don't think it proves anything about the quality of production.

Myself, I'm looking forward to what amounts to a $60 million Aeon Flux fanfic. And this can only be good publicity for whatever original film Peter's planning to unleash.

Incidentally, Peter: are you the same Peter Chung that worked on PM Entertainment's "Last Man Standing"? Do tell. I caught their "Epicentre" once, and that was one quirky little action flick...

Syra (Syra), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, if H-wood producers were smart they SHOULD have gone with the original co-writers on "The Demiurge": Steve DeJarnatt, Michael Ferris and John Brancato (the latter two of "The Game"/"Terminator 3" scriptwriting fame)...

Syra (Syra), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point... "true" to the original or not, how cool is it that we're getting, as you said, a multi-million dollar fanfic? I think it's good to see the sunny side of things here.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know two of the AF writers went on to write scripts for such blockbusters, wow.

Barb e (Barb e), Thursday, 2 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess one of the happy implications of this film is that it could lead to a re-release of the series on dvd - but if it tanks, it may simply destroy the chance.

And maybe if the films a hit there'll be an AF comic.

Sam G, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Re-release of the original episodes on dvd is on the way. Will include all the shorts plus extras.

Hold off on buying those bootlegs.

Stay tuned...

Peter Chung, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice! Some of my favorite episodes ("U or D", "Night") aren't on the DVD.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I've actually developed a bit of a (non sexual) fetish for Marton Csokas aka Trevor Goodchild, ever since his hilariously malevolent turn as the villain in xXx. Then he turnded up again in time to get choked to death by Matt Damon in Bourne Supremacy and as a smarmy, evil record exec in Garage days.

PVC (peeveecee), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

My god! Rerelease of all the eps on DVD! Happy days!

skye, Friday, 10 September 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey thanks for that last update Peter - its improved my hedon intake.

Sam G, Saturday, 11 September 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

This is great, because the industry is just getting to where vhs is an ancient artifactm but the word I'm focusing on here is 'extra's'............!!!

Barb e (Barb e), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Question: what kinds of "Extras" do you want to see on the dvd? We're compiling ideas as of now...

(I finally posted a reply to the Kill Bill thread, having just watched Vol. 2)

Peter Chung, Saturday, 18 September 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to see visual brainstorming sketches, production material, unused designs, etc. Maybe even old scripts (though I'm guessing that these can't make the cut due to legal barriers of some kind...?)

Of course, video and/or interviews and/or commentary by anyone and everyone would be really cool. Peter, personally I'd love to hear your commentary over every episode.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ordinarily, I hate the commentaries on dvds, and have never wanted to listen to them for very long.

I'd still like to try doing them, especially for the shorts, as it will be challenging for me to make them interesting, while not explaining the meaning of the films. I may do one or two for the half-hour episodes, but certainly not for all of them.

We are definitely planning to do video interviews with Drew Neumann, Howard Baker, writers, cast members, etc. We'll probably get some comments from people involved in the live action movie as well.

There will also be preproduction artwork, and storyboards. I'm also hoping to include some video clips of animation I've done in the "Aeon Flux" style, such as commercials.

Regarding Ferris' and Brancato's contribution to the Demiurge script-- they did a draft after Steve DeJarnatt's (which was based on a plotline I provided). I can't honestly point to anything in the surviving final version from what Mike and John wrote. The most memorable thing about their draft was the removal of the title and term "Demiurge", which they replaced with "Avatar". As literally correct as that term might have been, I thought it narrowed the idea of the deity to something too specific, and I changed it back.

(They are talented writers, but I wasn't sure they were right for Aeon Flux. I don't think they thought so, either.)

Peter Chung, Monday, 20 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I just remembered... maybe that altered clip from "Gravity", the censored one... or other dropped versions. I can't imagine there are many, and that one in particular is pretty short, but it'd be a nice bonus.

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if you manage to find Mark Mars for an interview, it'd be cool if it was uncut and uncensored.

Sam G, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! Thanks for asking us Peter. You know, you are the best! Now that I know there are going to be interviews with the orginal people you'd think there'd be nothing else to ask, but....I've always wanted to see you actually drawing Aeon and Trevor. That's be my wish, to see a clip of you drawing these guys

Minor qualm: if Okonedo will play the double agent with hands for feet, then the filmmakers have gotten the name wrong. It's Scaphandra, not Sithandra.

Correct indeed.

I tend not to ask questions anymore because I know there's a good chance that the answers will just make me shake my head...

Yeah but WHERE WERE YOU, FOOL, when they all had that MEETING and some spiffy, bright-idea'ed genius suddenly realized how NEAT and NIFTY it'd rilly be to allude to a subtle tie-in to the whole Lucasfilm franchise deal - we could LEAVE IT WIDE OPEN and maybe a few down the line, there it'd happen that see SITHANDRA is REALLY DARTH SIDIUS' DAUGHTER !!

dangerboy, Friday, 24 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh- yeah, and (since I wasn't there at that meeting, okay, really but of course I'm relying upon the Higher Power of my wonderful gift for imaginative genius here which is SOOOOOO much more GRATIFYING and POSITIVE) I guess these people were all hands down on the deal about AEon really having to do SOMETHING about that AWFUL HAIR. "A BEEHIVE," that's the ticket!

So Charlize has to have a fkn' beehive 'doo for the movie, ain't THAT a kick in the ass! That's why I guess she hurt herself during stunt practice. But my sources, okay, are like totally confidential and highly-positioned operatives nominally affiliated with Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums (C.R.A.S.H.) and The Department Of State.

AEon Flux in a Beehive.

Wadel dey tink uv NEGZD.

dangerboy, Friday, 24 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Dangerboy, long time no see!

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Saturday, 25 September 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I do so hope this is Marsian sarcasm and Aeon Flux will not be sporting a beehive.

Barb e (Barb e), Sunday, 26 September 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Barb, you know me so well!

But, hey, you have to admit that that'd be so FUNNY!

As if her politics were discerned by way of some typical formal or stylistic giveaway...replete with proper bureauoligarchian green eyeshadow and then all proper prim and Presbo finishing school poise and affectation. She's supposed to (according to the copy we've seen so far) come upon some sort of shock in the form of a discovery about the political situation in the course of her espionage intrigues, which will cause her to wonder whether she's on the "right" side of the conflict, so of course this ambivalnce on her own part might be easily and altogether readily evinced through a simple and devastantingly ham-handed device, y'know, like having her wear her hair up in some sort of a -- !?!

HEY -- Look, Barb, I mean, c'mon, just bear with me for this, I'm almost through and WOULD YOU NOT YAAAAAWN AT ME THAT PARTICULAR WAY, you know that I detest ill-mannered behavior!! NOW: Now, look here, y'dig me, baby, I'm thinking John Waters -cum- Quentin Tarantino -cum- Tim ("Scissorhands") Whatsizname -cum- Sam Arkoff -cum-

Oh, fergedditawreddy...

I mean, who knows. Maybe it's just the Jesus talkin' to me, again...

dangerboy, Sunday, 26 September 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter drawing Aeon and Trevor is a nice idea Barb.

Hey Dangerboy aka Mark Mars, are you going to do an interview or what?

Sam G, Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

If the ultimate mindf* sends Aeon Flux morphing into Marge Simpson during some amature psychoanalytical moment then she really does need a Custodian after all.

Barb e (Barb e), Monday, 27 September 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Although the thought of having director and writer commentary overlaying the narrative of my favorite show is most tanatalizing, I'd have to pass up that option in the end. Part of what makes "Aeon Flux" so memorable for me is because of it's truncated lifespan, it's relative obscurity (often banished to twilight marathons on second run channels when only the ungodly and the insomniacs are awake - me being one of those), and yes, the fact that most of the time I have no fucking clue what's going on. Although I'm eternally curious to hear the "true" meaning behind each episode, I know that no matter what the explanation I'd be disappointed in the end because there'ed no longer be any mystery to savor. That's why I was so happy to hear that Chung wouldn't do a narrative explanation if he actually did do a commentary track. Maybe he could talk about what inspired him during the creation of the episodes though.
As for what I would like to see: more shorts. I think the original canon of Flux episodes should stand as they are, especially since the original team isn't likely to be reunited to begin production again. Maybe one day we'll see a new testament of Flux, the first chapter of which would be the Hollywood movie, but for now I'd just like to see some more great and totally confusing shorts. I think the shorts always represented the spirit of the show in its truest form, which is really an absence of any characterizable form. (That's narrative form as it has to do with the tropes of TV series, especially animation. I don't mean form in terms of the animation technique, which is immediately recognizable). I'm sure Chung's still got some ideas knocking around in his head. Stuff that never made it off the cutting room floor or was simply too avant-garde (to put it nicely) to broach with the executives. Maybe he's did some short Flux animations as a passion project long ago. Now's the time to *chaching*! cash in Peter.

Logo, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, the "Loaded" short would be a nice thing to see. Also, new drawings/animation clips for the DVD menus and transitions? I like brief, ephemeral things that are, well, "loaded".

Matt Rebholz (Matt Rebholz), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Commentary from Peter on Chronophasia could be interesting.
