Turner's Movie Channel

Well, I hate to say it but I just don't think the new movies hold a candle to the old movies. As usual Ted Turner has more to offer in the way of talent than HBO, Cinemax, you name it they just don't make 'em like they used to. Tonight on Ted Turner's movie channel I watched Anchor's Away, and I'm just blown away myself by the talent of the older films. Frank Sinatra melts me and Gene Kelly danced with a mouse better than a dream. If the movies these days would only turn down the sound track and turn up the talent I'd be more impressed. Love to see Aeon Flux doing the Tango with a real live director like Chung. Pardon my opine.

TCM is the best channel on television these days. I'm always impressed by Ted Turner, the man seems (to me at least) to embody the breathless spirit of benevolent capitalism. TCM is a perfect example of that. Here are movies that you might never hear or see at the rental place, or really anywhere outside a vintage movie showing. He knows he's not going to make a bundle on them via licensing or advertisments, so he gives them away for free.

And these aren't just ancient, lame movies, either. I mean just today he's showing Jaws. Jaws! And the old King Kong, too. And I bet he realizes just how many people are likely to purchase copies of the DVDs after they see a film they enjoy, too. Shrewd businessman as well as socially responsible. I salute you, Ted.
