Kaena: The Prophecy

Anyone see this animated sci-fi joy flick? I caught it last night on DVD, and I'm still reeling from how (unexpectedly) good it was! It's like they took my dreams and put them on a film; like Jim Henson by way of Moebius. I spotted Alejandro Jodorowsky's name, as "contributor"... if I didn't know better I'd say he wrote the bulk of it.

Okay, yeah, the visuals are sometimes a little murky (lighting in the "fusion" scene -- if you're gonna show xenosex, SHOW xenosex -- because this is the audience you're going after anyway, the old school Heavy Metal freaks -- but I disgress) and the dialogue (though well dubbed by Jack Fletcher) has some groaners, but it's a small price indeed. The stately direction and music, combined with some high concepts and an insane level of capital "A" art, carries this film.

With this and Triplets Of Belleville, the French are two for two. Here, have an interview with director Chris Delaporte. Though you may want to wait... it contains spoilers... here's a choice quote:

"generally speaking, the idea that the first humans were born of vegetation and a computer was a concept that appealed to me"

SURREAL!
