A friend of mine says 'Halloween' is the first of the serial killer film genre. I said Psycho more likely is. He said Psycho was not about a serial killer, (he just killed girls his mother disapproved of).

So then is 'Halloween' the first of the serial killer movies?

This may be going a bit far back... but what about the old black and white film from the 1920s(?) called the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari? That was about a sleepwalking serial killer. I don't know if it really started the whole slasher-film genre, but it's an AWESOME movie nontheless.
