Triplets Of Belleville

"Belleville" had some of the most amazing camerawork I've ever seen in an animated movie. Only Peter's work and the Utena film equals it, in terms of sheer hyperkinetic motion.

The movie itself? Maybe a little less than the sum of it's parts. I felt like a funnier wrap-up could've been had without the anticlimax of the intentionally-awful chase scene (look, we're recycling footage! just like a BAD movie!). Most of the sight gags worked, though, and were inventive.

The use of simple, caricatured characters, in a film with extravagant CG, really worked. I got this Mike Judge, Beavis And Butthead feel from them... gritty, cynically intelligent, yet fanciful character studies.

I can't imagine a Flux fan, or anyone into animated visuals, not liking this (at least a little) -- 9 out of 10! Off to find some Tati films...

The films song nominated for an award was pretty darn good, old time sounding. I was wondering about the animation.

two months pass...
I enjoyed it, but found it somewhat slow at parts. I also enjoyed the apparently naive style it presented itself in, while in truth actually being a pretty sinister movie. I liked the character designs, too.
