Dark Horse Comics' "Aeon Flux"

As a generic sci-fi comic, "Aeon Flux" gets a passing grade. Cute heroine, the requisite shadowy conspiracies, and lots of Moebius/Darrow inspired art.

As an Aeon Flux comic, it's bad. Very bad. Aeon looks and acts like a 16 year old perkygoth, referring to herself as "girl" and keeping a Venus flytrap named Sidney in a pink bottle. Pink -- why, Aeon, why?
Breen security guns, which in the show would take your spine if you were lucky, are herein trained on "The Jungle" -- fast-breeding mutant plants (I wish I didn't have to write that sentence). And the most ruthless act of violence, thus far, involved the destruction of a printing press. All this makes Fredric Wertham happy and no one else.

I wish I could say that the art made up for the story, but it's just too inconsistent. Colors are too bright, too slick, and there's no visual mood established from page to page. Pieced together from bits of the movie, bits of the series, and bits of other comics, it's a book without a solid identity of its own. And, hey, I've seen freakin' TOY LICENCES that made distinctive and brilliant comics -- ROM comes to mind, as well as the 1980's Zoids (Grant Morrison!). There's no reason why it has to be this bland.

Somewhere, Peter Chung is laughing. Or crying. Or drinking Jolt. I don't know. Read Tank Girl, it's really good.

You fkn know what -- I just thought of a decent idea campaign to promote this whole shebang, like today or several years ago, just for some bitching tshirts, okay, like:

BITCH FATALE

NOBODY'S TOOL.

DEATHTOY.

I didnt know theyd put out a comic already. It sounds classic...

Sam Grayson, Monday, 17 October 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Where did you see this comic? Online? In the stores?

Bad or not, I'd like to see it. I remember Peter Chung once expressed disappointment in comic art because he felt comics focused on the art of anatomy and thinking seemed to get left out.

But then again, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Barb go to the aeonflux.com website. That's the only place i've seen some stuff. Does anyone know anymore info on the comic? I would like to check it out further.

There's a new featurette here:

The hype machine is going into high gear. Wired, Starlog, Paste, Wizard (and others) are running articles with new interviews (the writers tended to focus on the series boxset once I explain to them I had nothing to do with the live action movie).

Also, the movie website has been revamped.

I got an advance copy of the DVD set of the series to check. I like how the commentaries turned out-- pretty varied, though a lot of you here will have heard it all before on my posts on this board and on greenspun. I think that regulars here will be amused to hear the "odd couple" rapport between MM and me.

Musicland stores are going to be offering a special promotional giveaway with purchases of the DVD boxset. It includes model sheets taken from preproduction art. I laid it out myself from selected pieces from my archives. (So, if you haven't preordered it yet...)

BTW, I've been quietly enjoying my new life as a married guy. I expect I'll start posting more often as the dvd set gets released - and as projects in the works get announced.

Well congratulations Peter! How wonderful for you both:) She's a lucky girl, nice guys are hard to find and I expect they always have been. She's found one, alright.

Got a real laugh out of the 'odd couple' comment, and wow I can't wait to see THAT interview.

I've seen a few commercials, getting pretty exciting now. Thanks for the links.

Whoa, a married Peter Chung. I can't wait to check out the DVD set! My VHS copies are a little threadbare by now. ;)

Congratulations Peter!

I'm looking forward to seeing all the new (or is it all the old?) stuff.

Lady Morgan (Lady Morgan), Saturday, 5 November 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm doing a lot of press as the release date arrives. Some of the interviewers had never seen the show and were seeing it for the first time on the new dvd.

Here's a review/preview

Peter Chung, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

¡ÈThe Deviant Devices of Aeon Flux¡É is a feature, narrated by Aeon herself, that talks about the various weapons she uses to inflict maximum destruction on the world she inhabits.

Interesting... nice to hear Aeon's voice again.

¡ÈOther Work by Peter Chung¡É features some of the other twisted animation samples by the mastermind behind Aeon Flux, including promos for MTV and a Honda commercial.

Finally, "Loaded"!
