Who actually enjoyed the movie?

This is my first post on the board, and I'm almost hesitant to admit it here, but I really did like the movie a lot.

I very much agree with Harry Knowles' review: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=21942

Yes, it's significantly different from the series. Personally, I don't think Peter Chung's vision could work as a live-action film; Peter Chung's Aeon Flux can only work on animation, or the grotesque concepts and unendingly dark, ethereal realms (as wonderful as we know them to be) encountered in his show would alienate an audience watching those events happen in reality's three dimensions. Karyn Kusama and her screenwriters took a great alternate route instead, translating the show into something rather new and accessible for a wide audience, retaining the cutting-edge concepts and style that Peter Chung used to his advantage with the show (and with studio financing nonetheless!)...

Anyone else find themselves liking it?

I really did. The most important thing to me was if not in familiar AF plot convolutions, in spirit. Theron really gave me the impression of Aeon Flux. She made me feel as if she studied the series. Really tried. Maybe, (conjecture) spoke with Denise. I had a few impressions of what a conversation between the two women might consist of. I imagined Denise coaching her, giving her pointers, discussing Flux's incredibly mysterious character.

This may never have happened, but it was part of the fun of the movie for me. I liked seeing someone 'tackle' Aeon Flux. I wish we could have more, by the original cast of course.

Yeah, I would love to see more. I think the studio probably cut a lot out of the movie. But since it's a PG-13 and they'll want a good-selling DVD (I think the movie will really "take off" on DVD like Equilibrium or Donnie Darko), they'll probably release an unrated/extended cut. I hope so, at least!

I liked it. I thoght it was different from the series, but in many ways strangely similar. It had in it a flavour of classic, humanistic sci-fi from the past which took me off guard, but that I found to be really fascinating, even because it is usually forgotten in modern sci-fi movies.
And there are lot of things that are hinted at, that one might miss the first time around, but having seen it twice now, they are pretty clear to me. For example the subtle sexual innuendos between Aeon and Trevor. There's a sensuality in the scenes betwen them, whic reaches its peak in the scene where Aeon saves his life by extracting the bullets from his body with her bare hands and then healing the wind using sheds of her own skin, which was obviously genetically modified.
I also think the movie might reach cult status once it hits DVD. I certainly hope so.

two weeks pass...
I thought it was an okay action movie. Besides the names "Aeon Flux" and "Trevor Goodchild" I didn't really feel it had anything to do with the animated series. Peter was right that it was very ironic to see such a typical, cliched action movie based on a property that was so subversive and unusual. Even though I like the series alot the movie means nothing to me and I wouldn't care if I ever saw it again. It was just a very very average action movie.

I just got the DVD set and I've got to say I really don't like the new dialogue. It's very unclear and obtuse. It doesn't sound like things an actual person would say. Worst of all the recording ambience on the new dialogue sounds different that the old so it sounds very different and draws alot of attention to itself. Also I thought the actors sounded very, eh, unconvincing as they tried to squeeze this new dialogue into the mouth movements of different words. I still have my old VHS set so I guess it's no big deal to me, I can still watch the original versions if I prefer them. But in my opinion the new dialogue is worse than the original and worse than that it doesn't fit properly. Oh well.

Oh but I do think Peter had every right to change it, I know that if I created something I would want the rights to change it as I wanted to.

My desire to redo the dialogue in The Demiurge and End Sinister is not a matter of taking advantage of my right to change it. I couldn't in good conscience release them in their broadcast versions and honestly say that I approved. I'd always hated the broadcast versions. The decision was not made lightly, nor despite what people may think, recently.

Here are my comments regarding those episodes in the May 1997 Cinefantastique
(This article was based on interviews I did in 1996, while the show was still on the air):

I think that what is bothering fans complaining about the changes is that I somehow "tampered" with the original work, or changed my mind after the fact. That is plainly and simply incorrect. Remove that presumption and you may be able to enjoy the shows in a new way. And from what I'm seeing, viewers who HADN"T memorized the old dialogue are discovering that the shows are better than they'd remembered.

You're right on there, Peter. I was only in elementary school when the show premiered on MTV and I only remembered snippets of visuals from the episodes (specifically the ear-licking...). Watching them now on the boxed set, I can't tell what's been re-written or re-recorded; to me it's done so flawlessly. The only way I know anything had even changed was because of all the press about it...
