"The What-if Guy" is funny and has meaning, if you don't believe me, read it for yourself.

No.

Telling me to read the book so I can find out if you are right or wrong about whetehr I should read the book is a purely misguided argument. You are the one who has taken it upon yourself to convince me that I should read this book. Therefore I am leaving it up to you to explain to me in greater detail what it is that is so good about this book, so that I might overcome my disbelief.

What you have to say about it so far is singularly uncompelling.

I quit smoking years ago but am happy to stand close to smokers while they're smoking. Fresh cigarette smoke smells especially lovely outdoors. I'm glad I stopped when I did because I'm vain and I like looking young for my age but I don't regret doing it while I could get away with it. Vanity was my main reason for stopping. I've never been very health-motivated; I hardly believe I have a body most of the time. Lungs and things often seem like abstract concepts. If I live to 90 I'm taking smoking up again.

I thought that woman Momus described who was cooking and smoking at the same time sounded cute. For me, the sight of people eating fruit is quite annoying. They often look fussy and sanctimonious as they peel their oranges and pull the segments apart, or chow down their bananas. They don't look like sensualists to me; they look as if they're fulfilling the daily obligations outlined by the Food Pyramid.

-- estela (estelaisale...), June 28th, 2003.

^@^ (map), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:16 (eighteen years ago) link

There is a cliched style of voracious fruit eating which women have performed in films, etc., but it doesn't do much for me. I was thinking about watching men eat fruit rather than women when I wrote my post. I know we're encouraged to think about what makes women sexy so we can mimic it but I was catering to my own sexual preferences and thinking about men. I can't, offhand, think of an instance where I found a man looking sexy while eating fruit. It's not sexy (for me, maybe it is for others) to see a man peel a small mandarin and try to stop the juice from running down his jersey sleeve.

i used to make birds' nests to save birds the trouble but the nests never lived up to my creative vision and birds never went near them. i found this ungrateful, since their efforts looked even worse than mine, not round and symmetrical and neat like the nests in children's books which was the look i emulated, but just a haphazard pile of twigs and feathers and bark. i at least tried but the birds were plain lazy, 'ok mate, that'll do'.

Earliness is a form of unpunctuality. I hate early people, especially if they come to my house before a designated time. Also, if I'm late and they're being all indignant about waiting, a big part of the waiting time they're being indignant about is the period of time they were at the meeting place before they should have been.

(I'm never mad if people are late, I always give them the benefit of the doubt.)

RIP Tom Petty

years ago in orlando i was driving down a long hot dreary road when i realised tom petty was the front seat passenger in the car behind me, looking very relaxed and cheerful. they were behind me for a few miles (quite slow miles because i was new to driving and a complete ilx-style duffer at it and i was petrified of making a mistake and harming tom petty.)
but anyway i liked getting to see him not performing, just chatting in a car, and how the person appeared to match the persona.
another time on that same road i saw a space shuttle going up which was a stupendous sight even from 50 miles away so to be fair it wasn’t really a dreary road at all.
