Arrested Development, or 30 Rock, or Curb Your Enthusiasm

tbf, i just didn't categorise AD or 30 Rock as sitcoms. I really don't know why. I don't like CYE, without prejudice to how 'good' it is.

Basically I'm saying Friends is better that 2 1/2 men, HIMYM, that really shitty one about science nerds and anything that's been offered as a successor to 'Friends'- I don't think the three shows mentioned are that.

one month passes...

Look if we want to talk about crooning and golden voices than let's have a real benchmark like Roy Orbison. That guy could sing a hell of a lot better than Sinatra. I mean Sinatra became a legend primarily because of his branding (rat pack) and his good looks (ol' blue eyes)... I just can't get how someone would consider him to have one of the greatest voices.

jb's analogy sounds about right 2 me

BIG HII'M aka the teendriver (crüt), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Also Sinatra is pretty widely considered not to have a traditionally "great" singing voice, regardless of what one thinks of his stylings. Orbison otoh is considered one of the great pop voices.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago) link

the young sinatra's voice is so sweet, v different from the rat pack years (altho he could still be sensitive)
orbison was otherwordly and great, i'd still take sinatra but it wouldn't occur to me to compare

buzza, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago) link

loooooool "traditionally great singing voice" and "great pop voices" are totally different standards. sinatra is totally one of the great pop voices.

BIG HII'M aka the teendriver (crüt), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:25 (fourteen years ago) link

take billie holliday, pussy, and jazz out of frank sinatra add mario lanza, country, and loserdom and you have roy orbison. orbison was nearly as much a geek for greaseball faux opera melodramatic pop as elvis and sinatra was king of that shit.

balls, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Well I worded it badly. Orbison is known for his voice in terms of more traditional measures of singing ability - range, clarity, pitch, etc. Sinatra was a much more limited vocalist with a lot of style. They're totally different kinds of singers and their music is totally different and I don't really find it weird that someone would like one and not the other.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:29 (fourteen years ago) link

how the fuck was orbison's range impressive????

balls, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

lol you have obviously heard like two roy orbison songs in your life stfu

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:37 (fourteen years ago) link

i've heard more than you clearly

balls, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:45 (fourteen years ago) link

ok according to last.fm i've listented to roy orbison 55 times in the past three months (including 'shadaroba' 17 times which no idea what's happening there) so what orbison track am i missing where he's just putting ella fitzgerald to shame.

balls, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:55 (fourteen years ago) link

His range was like 3-4 octaves

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean in In Dreams alone he spans like 2.5 octaves and hits a high C - a slightly weird one, but he hits a pretty clear one in Only the Lonely.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:05 (fourteen years ago) link

If forced to choose, I'd def pick Orbison.

rank sinatra, surely

governor-general allin (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:58 (fourteen years ago) link

orbison is great but dismissing frank as some kind of poser is dumb IMO

parasitic mistletoe (m coleman), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:30 (fourteen years ago) link

roy's range is breathtaking and capable of conveying tragic emotion but jesus x what sinatra did w/phrasing was revolutionary & influential (even though he loathed R&R).

parasitic mistletoe (m coleman), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:34 (fourteen years ago) link

sinatra was my gateway drug into pre-rock pop songs - along w/ring-a-ding shoob-be-doo novelties he recorded SO many songs and the arrangements on his 50s sides kill

parasitic mistletoe (m coleman), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno how heated a debate you can get into with someone nicknamed "balls"

the day the Marc Lois took over (San Te), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 12:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Orbison is known for his voice in terms of more traditional measures of singing ability - range, clarity, pitch, etc. Sinatra was a much more limited vocalist with a lot of style.

If you care anything at all about singing, then you would have noticed Sinatra's clarity and pitch. It might be apocryphal, but the story that Miles used to model the pitch of his trumpet playing on Sinatra's singing totally makes sense.
