on ILM it'd be hard for any rookie to even sidle up to #2 or #3 for either distinction.

TAKING SIDES: Steely Dan vs. The Circle Jerks
Masturbatory coffee-table jazz-rock noodlery for people with patches on the elbows of their corduroy blazers hanging out in wine bars or "I JUST WANT SOME SKANK". Circle Jerks, obv.

Right, but... that's the whole point, isn't it? The whole point is to dilute it so that there isn't any of the original substance left, just its "energy". So please debunk the "energy" theory, not the lack of chemically efficacious molecules.

orgy's version came out in seventh or eighth grade for me so it must have been like 4th or 5th grade for crutis. i remember saying "wow they really captured that 80s sound!" to some older friends who just sort of looked at me in that way that feels like you got kicked in the nuts. after that i stopped talking about music for 4-5 years
― max, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:38 (sixteen years ago) link
was it not at least in trainspotting or some 90s hit film before being covered by orgy?

dude you can't be more than like 2 years older than me, don't pull that generation gap shit! anyway early-mid 90's modern rock radio played a shitload of New Order, and "Blue Monday" was always my least favorite of their songs, before any tainting by Orgy (or Rihanna).
as far as I can tell the biggest 90's soundtrack "Blue Monday" was on is The Wedding Singer lol
― Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link
most of my similarly-aged friends agree Orgy's version is better
― BLASTOCYST, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:22 (sixteen years ago) link
kraftwerk thought new order's setup wuz "primative"

dude you can't be more than like 2 years older than me, don't pull that generation gap shit!
hey I probably only knew New Order's first because I grabbed a used cassette of substance back in middle school. Figured your tastes as a teen ran harder than that.
― da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 20:02 (sixteen years ago) link
the alternative to your tastes being tainted by orgy is that you're just RONG about the song, sorry I gave the benefit of the doubt.
as far as NO on the radio goes, I never would have suggested you knew Frente first.
― da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link
hey, i knew the frente version first! and yet, strangely, i am at peace with that fact
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 19 November 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

― bell_labs, Monday, 19 November 2007 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link
I will admit it re: Frente!, yes. But I'd still rather be RONG than an Orgy-damaged n00b.

I spend much of 1992 - 1995 downloading midi versions of alternative rock songs and changing the instruments around

Tarantino does this all the time, inserting long stretches of innocuous conversational dialogue - it ratchets up the tension because the viewer is both being made to think of the characters as normal, average boring people while at the same time eagerly anticipating the conversation's end to get to the "action". It makes the punctuated scenes of violence more surprising and more engaging. Its called pacing.
