This is the CD I have:

http://www.discogs.com/release/15659

These tracks were spread over a few of the 487392 versions of the "Dark and Long" single. Sometimes they're listed as remixes of D&L, but they're not.

Herman's Hermits - Greatest Hits Vol. 3

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 5 May 2006 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

So good that they needed three Greatest Hits LPs.

Meltzer, from an early piece called "English Heavies":

"With all this interest in the Hollies nowadays (Graham Nash's fault), it might as well be brought out in the open what the Hollies had going for them: five or six pretty little nuggets over the years. Herman's songs were prettier, more nugget-like, and there were at least ten or fifteen of them that amounted to more than a hill of beans. And once (on a Leonard Bernstein reevaluate rock and roll TV special) Herman and Graham himself suggested that Donovan could save the world. So distinctions need not apply, but if you want 'em take Herman of course."

msp (mspa), Monday, 8 May 2006 00:20 (eighteen years ago) link

wow, where?

that Vol. 10 CD is one of my all time favorites, way psychedelic. la monte young makes a lot more sense knowing things like that were floating around. that album sounds great sent through about three delays as well.

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 8 May 2006 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

My library has the whole set of those Southern Journey volumes. The best is the stuff by the Old Regular Baptists.

Unlimited Toothpicker (eman), Monday, 8 May 2006 01:02 (eighteen years ago) link

the thing i visited was a gathering of folks that grew up singing that way on occasion and special camp-meeting/singalongs or whatever. there's a few southeast denominations that sing acapella only ...so this tradition has been kept alive in those churches especially.

i'll have to check out that old regular baptists stuff.

i liked TH. their recent record was different somehow. i can't remember.

there used to be a really rad set of live TH stuff online.

that zombi record is good, but i can't help but feel like if this continues i'll have to pull out some yes and rush soon. i'm not sure if i can get behind that.

Fantasy: Land of Dreams. Odd, I like the first song, which is fuzzy and shouty, better than the poppier rest of the album. Not sure yet whether it's going to hold up.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:30 (eighteen years ago) link

listening to stuff i got in the mail:

ohsees - the cool death of island raiders (dude from the coachwhips doing his psych/folk thing. WAY WAY better than the double-disc thing he put out a while back)

coachwhips - double death (dvd and cd of b-sides and stuff. i'll probably never watch the dvd)

lansing-dreiden - the dividing island (the first song is awesome. sounds a little like kemado labelmates dungen. don't know if i like the album as much as i loved the first one. probably not. but it's still pretty swank)

ignite - our darkest days (some punky thing that i will not be listening to twice. in fact, let me go take it off right now)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

when all is said and done, i'm not much of a coachwhips fan.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

i listened to the cd...and well...it was ok for the drunk walk from bar to train...after that it was just loud...does the world need outakes and covers and dvds?

what did you think of the ohsees? havent put that in yet

is that how they're spelling O.C.S. now?

i realized recently that Richie, Francis' friend on Malcolm in the Middle (played by Todd Giebenhain) looks EXACTLY like John Dwyer
