ha i was kind of getting mad at myself at how mad i get every time shakey revives that thread. ilx should never have baited him by digging the wire, i guess.

horseshoe, Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't even read those threads intentionally and I get it - Shakey hates the wire. We ALL get it.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Sunday, 13 September 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think he DOES hate the wire, he just doesn't love it.

That is awful. I am sorry. Help it up. That is mean. (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 13 September 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Well I hate the Wire and I haven't seen it. Seems like one of those smug things, something to signify to people that you have an s.o. to snuggle up with on the couch and watch a DVD set with. For starters. And if it sympathizes with narcs I'm just not there.

Half-serious.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

It sympathizes with everyone, really.
Even you. Specifically you. There's a fourth season arc about you.

xpost so you'd have something to talk about with all of your couple friends

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 05:39 (fifteen years ago) link

do you hate it when people talk about tv in general cuz it reminds you that you're single?

Angus Young (roxymuzak), Sunday, 13 September 2009 06:23 (fifteen years ago) link

all the people that i know are fans of it are deeply, deeply single. they're very much single.

would take two steps back from a person at a party that describes themselves as 'deeply single' btw

xxpost Dude, yes. It's like you guys have never heard of this DVD box set phenomenon. The couples work through each disc on the couch and eat snack food? And they can tell their friends, "I don't watch TV"? Y'all are playing dumb.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:13 (fifteen years ago) link

aww, we did this, though we don't say, "I don't watch TV." In fact, it helps ameliorate the non-TV-watching superiority complex/condescension issue, because, now we actually do watch TV.

omar little, Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost When I said I was half-serious I was serious. I am annoyed sometimes at this phenomenon as a status/happiness signifier, but most of the time it's just a normal, normal, normal fact of life.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, we didn't watch the whole thing together - often, we'd start on a season, and I'd watch multiple episodes after my better half went to bed.

Suggest Bander-Meinhof Complex (sarahel), Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

To Omar? I really thought it was practically their exclusive domain. Except I had a roomate last year who watched a buttload of M*A*S*H DVD sets on her laptop all by herself, despite having a boyfriend, but she took forever doing it, I guess, one or two episodes at a time. Despite that it was sort of a depressing activity for her to be doing. Although we didn't have TV, not even an antenna.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

xp - what is a status/happiness signifier? couples watching tv shows on dvd together? watching the Wire in particular? Cuddling on the couch watching stuff while eating snack food?

Suggest Bander-Meinhof Complex (sarahel), Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I watched one episode of Thirty Rock and an Ernst Lubitsch movie with my last girlfriend. With the one before her I was pretty well annoyed with screens and monitors at the time. I think we watched Being There?

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

the shows i've watched on dvd solo outnumber the ones i've watched with my fiancee about 10-1. i feel like my friends who watch tv on dvd are always doing it alone with a bottle of liquor or a fully packed bowl.

omar little, Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Sarahel: Oh, it's just something I've been thinking about lately. It's less about what's actually done than how it's communicated.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Thinking about, like, last four or five days. Noticing what is broadcast and the effort to broadcast it. Previously I think I noticed and was annoyed but wasn't sure why.

i have never watched a show on dvd alone or with my wife. 90% of the time my tv is there for background noise, i kinda don't want to put any effort into it. also i like the randomness of just turning it on, flipping a few channels without planning what to watch

The Wire isn't exactly snuggle-inducing fare ... probably the only one of this type of show that is less so would be OZ. Of course, there could be couples that like to cuddle while watching prison rape ...

Suggest Bander-Meinhof Complex (sarahel), Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I watched The WIRE with two of my colleagues from work, and we'd have pizza and bottles of wine and dig into the WIRE DVDs one night every two weeks or so (and we had a Hopkins drinking game where we had to drink whenever the university was mentioned on the show). But my partner hated The WIRE so he wasn't part of that. I do snuggle and snack with my bf on the couch while watching The Venture Brothers and Mad Men, so . .. guilty as charged, I guess.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, but do you cuddle during scenes of prison rape? I dunno ... maybe Shakey does.

four weeks pass...

Yeah, and my point is really that I have always thought Jay-Z is enjoyable enough but has been consistently overrated. I don't think he's had some massive deterioration in quality; I think people have gotten tired of the one thing he does, which is mutter into the mic and say "uh-huh" a lot.
