The new album Burned Mind by Wolf Eyes is not for everyone. Is it radio friendly? Not really. Electronic keyboard blips, dizzying rps, dead silence, and primal shrieks are not thought of as universal traits of pop music. So, what is Wolf Eyes and what makes Burned Mind my pick of the week? Wolf Eyes creates ambient noise mixed with roars that are entrancing and intense. The Detroit band's debut release on Sub Pop sounds abrasive, harsh, eerie, and distorted. The sounds of dissipation on this record are hypnotic and arousing. From the eeriness of "Stabbed in the Face" to the intense Trent Renzor-like spews on the title track, Burned Mind is an album of hostility. It is not possible to listen to Wolf Eyes and clean your room, read articles, (insert any similarly stressful activity here). To me, Wolf Eyes is like My Bloody Valentine and Radiohead in that they are their own genre despite attempts by others to make sense of their sound. Wolf Eyes evokes Joy Division-like moods without any aspect of song structure. Their concerts are epic displays of gongs, distorted keyboards, and intense shrieks by Nate Young.

To borrow from Zoolander, Wolf is so hot right now.

I urge fans of Black Flag, Swans, and My Bloody Valentine to check out Wolf Eyes. I know, categorizing bands is bad but I am categorizing all of these bands under "noise" as opposed to manufactured genres. Attempting to categorize Wolf Eyes into independent electronic or industrial is a rather tedious chore because quite concisely, Wolf Eyes is about noise, the manipulation of silence, and a scathing attack on the senses of possible listeners.
