sorry, forgot the silent (?) "L" in the thread title. should be "skuylkill".

Treeship, Monday, 13 October 2014 00:10 (ten years ago)

maybe it's not silent. maybe it's like "school kill".

Treeship, Monday, 13 October 2014 00:11 (ten years ago)

I've only ever heard it pronounced as "school-kill."

spastic heritage, Monday, 13 October 2014 00:17 (ten years ago)

It's closer to "skookull" up here; actually more like "skook'll" I guess.

cwkiii, Monday, 13 October 2014 00:20 (ten years ago)

i think i pronounce it 'skookull' 'sku+cool'

Mordy, Monday, 13 October 2014 00:22 (ten years ago)

skook'll seems like the best representation for how i think it's pronounced, because the "ull" is pronounced more quickly than "skookull" would indicate

Treeship, Monday, 13 October 2014 00:23 (ten years ago)

never have i been less confident about the pronunciation of a word

Treeship, Monday, 13 October 2014 00:23 (ten years ago)

yes, i think that's good - skook'll

The river was later given the Dutch name Schuylkill (pronounced [sχœylkɪl]) by its European discoverer, Arendt Corssen of the Dutch West India Company.[citation needed] One explanation given for this name is that it translates to "hidden river" and refers to the river's confluence with the Delaware River at League Island, which was nearly hidden by dense vegetation. Another explanation is that the name properly translates to "hideout creek". The bulk of the Unami Lenape actually lived along the Schuylkill River and not, as their namesake denotes, the Delaware River, which the Lenape called "Len-api Hanna" or "People Like Me River."

i had assumed "schuylkill" was of native american derivation. regardless, i think it's the hardest word to spell in the english language. saying this as someone who came in 2nd place in the 6th grade spelling bee.

that's the castkills Yiddish way of saying it. Sort of like an old Jewish guy my dad knew who thought the "tuch" in Metuchen, NJ was pronounced as in "tuchus"

My mother lived for much of her childhood in what she pronounced as Skooglehaven. Good enough for me.
