aaron, have you ever read the anderson valley advertiser?

when i was in college about 10 years ago, there was a big flap because researchers thought that thomas pynchon was contributing letters to the editor under the pseudonym wanda tinasky. it actually turned out to be a writer (much lesser known) but it was kind of a funny pre-internet literary hype that was funny to read about on the BBS.

No, and what does this have to do with anything?

msp. (ex machina), Friday, 22 October 2004 21:13 (twenty years ago) link

As previously reported, Prince Jefri -- brother of the sultan of Brunei, an oil-rich country on the northern coast of Borneo -- has had his allowance cut by the sultan to only $300,000 a month, a punishment because Jefri had been wasting so much of the family's money. Jefri allegedly blew $15 billion in his role as the country's finance minister. Now, Jefri's vast collection of consumer goods -- some 10,000 items, including hundreds of cars, 17 airplanes and several yachts -- has been sold at auction for a total of merely $7.8 million. Among the items to go were Jefri's favored yacht, which he had named "Tits," with its twin dinghies named "Nipple 1" and "Nipple 2." Until two years ago, the sultan was the world's richest man, but his fortune is believed to have shrunk to about $10 billion.

Also, UKIAH IS HAIKU SPELLED BACKWARDS.

My friend Dave saw Tre Cool hanging out at the Hog Farm commune down the road from my house.

"Hey, are you TRE COOL?"
"Yeah"
"YOU SUCK!"
*stomps off*
haha

Also, my stepdad was head carpenter on Bob Barsodi (or however you spell it, the BGP/Grateful Dead promoter)'s new house there. Said BB was stoned constantly all day every day.

Tell us WHY they're overrated, not just not liking them (or, you know, just prove you're narrow... and don't know much / haven't heard much)

For me, the definition of overrated: The Beatles. I don't hate them, but every single throwaway lameass song they released - has been hailed as genius!

THE HEAVIEST AND LOUDEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME... Nobody can scream like Ian Gillian... probably one of the most underated albums of all time...

If you don't have this album in your heavy metal/hard rock collection, you have to have rocks in your head...

This is the HEAVIEST, and LOUDEST album of all time hands down...

Must be played loud...

I saw the Born again tour when Black Sabbath came to Toronto, and don't believe anything that you heard... The concert was awesome... and they even done the best version I have ever heard of smoke on the water...

Too many people get stuck into one way of thinking...

Oh, if it wasn't with OZZY it isn't Sabbath, etc...

Give your head a shake...

Don't get me wrong, the original Black Sabbath line up can never be duplicated, of course...

But, so many closed minded people exist out there...

If something is good, or great, it is great, and should stand on it's own merit...

If you are a fan of heavy metal, and you give Born Again half a chance... and that means actually listening to the entire album a few times...

You will see, and understand what I mean...

I like Metallica, and Megadeath, and lots of heavy albums, and heavy metal...

Don't get me wrong...

BUT, just download DISTURBING THE PRIEST, and listen to the screaming, and heavy riffs, etc... gotta be the loudest, and heaviest song I've ever heard...

everyone talks aout TRASHED... what about HOT LINE, and KEEP IT WARM...????

sounds like alot of people never really heard this entire album, yet comment on it anyway...

When it came out and I heard the album for the first time, I couldn't believe how loud, and heavy it was...

I always hoped Gillian, and Iommi would get back together and record more songs...

By the way, I shook Iommi's hand before he jumped in the Limo, and got his autograph on my ticket after the concert at Maple leaf gardens, in Toronto...

So, I have met Ozzy, and Iommi, and shook both their hands...

When Ozzy went on his first tour, for Blizzard of OZ, he came to A.A records, and signed autographs in Toronto...

Me and my buddy Gordon Lucas of Hamilton were there...

And it was a great moment... long line up though...

around the block, we were lucky to get in, as they had to shut the doors, not everyone got to meet Ozzy... but we did... and he signed my Blizzard of Ozz album...

GETTING BACK TO BORN AGAIN...

Ever hear DIGITAL BITCH... another heavy, loud song that will blow your speakers out...

If you like loud, heavy music, and you're open minded about Ozzy not being on vocals on this album, and you are willing to listen to the album as loud as you possibly can... THEN YOU'RE READY FOR BORN AGAIN...

If you are a fan of heavy metal/hard rock, and you don't lik ethis album... YOU HAVE SOME BAD PROBLEMS HAPPENING IN YOUR HEAD...

It just amazes me how a fan of heavy, heavy music cannot like this album...

Download DIGITAL BITCH right now, and listen to that song a few times, and you'll get an idea of how heavy this album is...

One of the greatest recordings of all time...

As far as Stonhenge, and the dark...

Iommi, and Black sabbath have done this numerous times... Just about every Black Sabbath album has a musical, or some strange noises, etc...

It's all aprt of the BORN AGAIN experience...

I believe people fear really giving the album a chance with the devil baby on the front cover...

They are probably too afraid to listen and appreciate it, and the reviews I read against Born Again here... You can just tell that the people writing the reviews haven't even given the album a chance...

Probably heard part of a song, and judged it from there...

AGAIN, IT AMAZES ME HOW ANY TRUE BLACK SABBATH FAN COULD NOT LIKE BORN AGAIN, AND ANY TRUE HEAVY METAL/HARD ROCK FAN COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT THIS C.D IN THEIR COLLECTION...

I was thinking about this today. I always sign off my emails with a 'thanks' or 'cheers' or 'kind regards' and then my name, even when I'm replying, most of the time. this strikes me as really pointless and old fashioned. like, why bother when clearly my name is in the sender field anyway. and writing 'cheers, Ch4rlie' at the bottom of every email it's not a flipping letter.

that said, I always feel like I'm coming off a bit curt if I don't

Interesting fact I never knew until today is that Patrick Mimran was the CEO and owner of Lamborghini.

In fact I never really had any idea who he was other than the artist who put up those billboards in Chelsea. I never thought they were that interesting so I never found out more about him.

Totally clueless about the Lamborghini connection, always thought it was a moneyed but desperate artist trying to break in.. kind of like that sour patch four sad generations removed from Warhol artist who couldn't get into a gallery but kept screwing wooden wheatpaste signs of his one NYT press hit into traffic signs. I guess I respected it, he did it pre-blogs and pre-social media. But I still bombed the shit out of those wooden thingys with Ocularis avant-garde screening schedules. At one point he even cried uncle, made the appropriate calls threatening that I should be fired.. One of my prouder moments as a volunteer was being bought a pint for a job well done on his contraptions.

I have often wondered how the super rich found people to work for them. Once, a long time ago, we had a young man who did some carpentry for us. He actually would do painting in the house. He was just good at a lot of things. He worked for a lot of other people also. One day he showed up in a bright red pick up truck. As we admired the truck, he said, the Jones bought it for me because they did not want my beat up pick up sitting in their drive way! After that he pretty much just worked for the Joneses. p's wife

That was like 91, I was summarily blown away....and then summarily unimpressed. "Keep Your Head Up" is an amazingly progressive song--arguably the most feminist record ever recorded by a male rapper. But Pac is unfortunately very similar to 50 Cent in many respects. His promotion is more about mystique, image, legend and myth.

He really illustrates an unfortunate junction between black power, black leftism and gangsterism--i.e. the idea that criminals are the blackest among us because they are the ones white folks fear most. That is a powerful powerful--if fallacious--notion in the black community. It's equally as powerful in the white community, but for different--yet equally disturbing--reasons.

White racial paranoia is perhaps the only power black people percieve themselves as having. Pac wedded that idea to racial essentialism, and his Black Panther lineage was cited as his license to do so.

That marketing genius is often confused with actual skills. But hey, hip-hop isn't the only arena where people confuse hype with acumen.

"but it was clearly meaningful to many many people..."

Same could be said about Puff Daddy. Doesn't make him a great MC.
