caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

some people say it doesn't count, but I like all the "minimalists" and their friends.

La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Adams, Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, Phil Niblock, John Gibson etc...

as mentioned on another thread..Downtown Music Gallery recently got a bunch of sealed copies of the John Gibson record Philip Glass put out in the 70s and were selling them for 14 bucks. One side is Gibson playing a church pipe organ and it is INTENSE. Maybe they still have some, you should all go get them.

Does John Zorn count as classical? Because Songs from the Hermetic Theater is kinda noize.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i think some of zorn's stuff could be labelled classical, maybe.. some of his soundtracks definitely. there's one my roomie last year that had some great cello/piano stuff. maybe that's "chamber music" and not "classical music;" i don't know the difference. it had mirror in the title.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a couple of tracks on Hermetic Theater that are almost straight-up noise. I don't know which one you heard, maybe it was "In the Mirror of Maya Deren" - I haven't heard that one.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was it. Some really gorgeous stuff on there.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I listen to classical, sure.

(Jon L), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

post-war classical has been one of 2-3 things I've been really digging deep into for much of the year - some things I've been enjoying lately:

helmut lachenmann 'das madchen...' 2 CD on kairos
horatiu radulescu 'string quartet' on edition RZ
klaus lang string quartet, also on edition rz
rihm 'jadgen und formen' on DG
kagel 'heterophonie'
carter 'string quartet no.5'
finnisy 'red earth' on NMC

john zorn does count - he has those game pieces, he does use concepts to organize ensembles that are inspired by classical music.
