Tomas Andersson, "Copy Cat" 12"
Contributed by Andrew Culler
Friday, 17 March 2006

I can't break down my love for this new Tomas Andersson 12” to the kind of buzzwords that would explain its totalitarian effect on even my own hermetic listening patterns. This is head-banging techno without the flashy Raumschmiere-isms, crystalline and colorful, music to stomp along to: wild, light, heartbeat stompin’ action.

I can say that this has spun for the loneliest of squinty morning teas to the last speed-driven Saturday night and a hundred miles in between, those patterns like electric dominos falling inside my sternum and twitching with each eyebrow in slow approach to a sleep that flickers. Shit is tweaked, really hyper-minimal, ecstatic-based though tight as drum.

Andersson works in squealing highs and rolling lows as firm as the resolve with which they’re whittled into pulsing blasted fragments, rolled into inhuman repeat and extra-human stutter. With this, he is swinging Bpitch back into a label of plastic anthems, no subtleties allowed; it is absolute, button-mashed, BIG electro.

shane's south african!

neu and klaus schultze and all those cabbagerockers invented trance. best way in is thru there. first few tracks of Holden's At the Controls side 2 is motorik! it even has a harmonia track on it.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

the only reason you guys are comparing basic channel to neu! is that both are deutscher. and pretentious.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

U MAD

that reminds me, whatever happened to scouse house?

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

although, perhaps it is best if we leave that in its rightful place, by the side of the road, in toxteth

its a pity juno doesnt have an mp3 clip of mathew jonson;s marionette. that would go down well right now, in that zone out kind of way. although, thats not european either,

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

La Dusseldorf 1972 = Einmusik 2006 in its major chord ridiculousness.

vahid, i just listened to snatches of that Tom Middleton album. wtf nothing like neu! neu was barebones stuff. i mostly can't see past the border community stuff, which has that constant 8th bass throb through it. maybe try Weltzwei for krautrockingness (they have a new one out soon). Also Pier Bucci - L'Nuit - it snatches bits of the bass from yoo doo right...

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

since when was neu! barebones? neu! 73 isn't barebones at all. also the two out of the first four tracks of the jedi knights album are just drums and echo anyway so i'm not sure what you're talking about. i am going to post the first four tracks off the jedi knights album so you can see how wrong you are.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

neu! 73?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

you know the terje rmx of lindstroms another day? it kind of reminds of balearic krautrock, i...like that

048 (gareth), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

i was never saying basic channel sounded like neu, i was just saying ian would like them because they're stoned to the gill.

also, vahid, what kinda jacket is that. trés nice.

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAAHAHA GUESS WHAT BRAND

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

er, 75, sorry.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

vahid, neu is a polite dude on guitar and a drummer who makes each cymbal crash seem like an big event. rock never got much more stripped back. (though 75 did beef things up a bit. mostly with yelling though) but post the tracks. I am interested!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

get one melvins album.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

SEAGOLF (gareth), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

the first four tracks of "new school science" (the rest are goofy breaks + ambient techno funk ... these is the real kraftwerk-into-dubby-disco-house deal)

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

downloading!

there is also this comp which isn't that good but I like the Autechre cover of Weissensee and download's prim and ultra-faithful hallogallo

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

while you're at it tell mr shirtless adonis that i am bringing legal action against him in australian court for taking my $20 ILX server donation and not providing a receipt or proof that he used it for whatever.

ps this is actually sort of a big deal for me - how many people remember the massive fund drive andrew did a year or so ago where he had to buy a new server and stuff and then there was no sort of accting of how much he pulled in and what he spent it on? SHADY.

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

racking my brains here but i cannot think of one electronic tune with the motorik beat.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I like Basic Channel, probably would like it on drugs too, everything is good on drugs Vahid.

I would recommend also Smallville mixed by Tobias Thomas.

x-post surely there are loads, I can't think of any either tho.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

BUTT IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 13 April 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

this has nothing to do with anything, but as it's a thread gareth is reading -- hey gareth, how's this? ::

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0001ZA1P8.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_V56924782_.jpg

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 14 April 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

hstencil, can you name the motorik gerard potuznik track or album?

vahid, I've gotta get back to you on the Neu into techno issue but a huge weekend with work here. also i must think over the neu/dub/e2e4/disco connection the Jedi stuff raises, which I don't know about and which is quite a different strand altogether to my funkless repetitive bass-riff appreciation of neu, a strand which perhaps would never morph into the greatest of dance musics...

Good Dog (Good Dog), Friday, 14 April 2006 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Potuznik, Amore Motore (…Autobahn) on Mego

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 April 2006 14:12 (twenty years ago)

thank you.

i also have the opposite question for noise people. if I've been mostly listening to dance so am out of the loop recently but i like Pharoah Overlord and Neu and some Animal Collective what is something very glidy and soothing and precise in noise rock/metal?

Good Dog (Good Dog), Friday, 14 April 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

some people will dissagree with me (cough*milton*cough), but you might like the new Liars

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 14 April 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

that roubaix is good, but the reissue thing has been kind of odd, when it comes to roubaix, they seem to have chosen odd things to reissue, so its kind of hit and miss. theres a thread on ilm, it even has more than the usual 3 responses

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 15 April 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I never trust an ILM thread with more than 20 posts

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 15 April 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I love your Roubaix comp gareth, it makes me curious to hear even more of his overtly electronic music
