only to the TR once so far -- but me likes. maybe not as folkscene (or whatever the last one on communion was called) but lets see if it grows on

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 19 November 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

jack, what's that eccentric soul comp like? i've been interested in picking it up. is it really eccentric?

today i bought:
a haircute
Soundmurder "Wired for Sound"
Lindsey Buckingham "Law & Order"

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 19 November 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

eccentric in the sense of maybe production and roughness around the edges and the men behind each of the tiny labels (not to mention quirks here and there). both of the Eccentric Soul comps, the Capsoul one and the latest Bandit one, are great.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

jc -- hope you're feeling better, friend

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks stormy (and gygax! and ian)-- i'm getting there. my blood glucose levels are evening out, though its fucking hard planning meals, counting carbs and eating on a rigid schedule. for a guy like me, being conscious of my body 24/7 is grueling, man. thank god my brain is finally operational again so i can listen to music, which i have been doing for the last three hours. there's nothing more soothing than a mix of Hasil Adkins, Pell Mell, Notekillers, Spirit and the Beakers.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the big D runs in my family (mom's side) so I've always been wary of it ... hang in there

Hasil Adkins

as he might say -- 'No more hot dogs!!!!'

man, I gotta hear that Notekillers thing....

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean: yes 2046 has a periodic logo floating up top, looks like it was ripped from a Chinese Film Festival screener.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How much does a boot of that movie go for?

im siked to see it, but i dont think i could bare floating logos.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

mine was $7.98 (new release). the logo is periodic. this is a region 3 dvd too.

Did Falling James run for President this year?

Back in the pre-Nirvana days, Falling James and Pat Ruthensmear worked at the SST superstore on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood... both in drag and "smear"-ed lipstick.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 November 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, that man man record ain't bad. yeah, they are going for the ramshackle eastern european hurdy gurdy monkey grinder sound. waits/beefheart/etc. but it's spry and refreshing!~like a stick of clove gum! (gogol bordello, they are the other name they throw around in the promo stuff)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 November 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i could imagine gogol similarities and stuff. fun-ness.
m.

msp (msp), Monday, 22 November 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like the Dears album! It would sound amazing if yoo were stoned. I think I like it the most out of the 4 I got. (all on the same label, i guess i didn't mention that.)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

what does it SOUND like?

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the first song starts out with this organ playing two notes. the organ is making the beat. then a gently plucked acoustic guitar comes in. then this fucking cool-ass bass hits the organ's beats-bass like Miami bass-then a synth note pops up and follows the organ and bass. then a flute drifts in and then this undead choir starts singing "Heaven Have Mercy On Us" over and over and then this heavy metal guitar starts playing a fuzzy solo really fast and then ever higher pitched guitars start squalling behind that guitar and then the song starts. a cool walking loping coolasfuck bass line and some hepcat drums get a groove going and then dood starts singing and it just gets spacier from there. I really like it. GREAT production. seriously. acidic and mean. and lean.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

did that make any sense? i dunno, i get sent a lot of crap, so it's nice to get something cool in the mail! it's so nice to hear that fucking bottom heavy bass sound on a rock record. or hear ANY bass sound on a rock record.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i also like a band that can build/construct a song and add layers without it having to be a big fucking deal. too many bands want every song to be a MAJESTIC CATHEDRAL OF SOUND or somesuch and they don't spend enough time actually getting the basics down. if you've got a rock solid bass-line or a steel-trap drumbeat you can build ANYTHING on top of it, you know? But it's like i always say: You can throw all the pineapple and b-b-q chicken you want on top of it, if you don't know how to make a pizza, you don't know how to make a fuckin' pizza.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)
