i played flight of the behemoth. is that a good one? i wasn't really into to it, it was a bit too sludgy, reminded me of the melvins haha

sunroof! can be blissfully gorgeous. slsk the track "snow covered hills" from the split CD with vibracathedral orchestra.

in gowan ring & stone breath are both very nice psych-folk outfits; vaguely medieval, 'ethereal' vocals, lots of prettiness.

Les rallizes denudes are the owners of my favorite bassline ever, from the version of "Night of Assassin" on LIve 77. Droney/groovey basslines with crazy Japanese wailing and really raw/harsh guitar stuff. Taj Mahal Travellers are other godfathers of Japanese psych/cosmic exploration... if you've any interest in modern Japanese psych stuff like LSD March or Acid Mothers, buth Tah Mahal Travellers and LRD are worth checking out.. LRD in particular melt my brain. There's a good record by Takehisa Kosugi called Catch Wave, and he was in taj Mahal Travelers.

Sunn O))) are good, but maybe not your thing if you're not into really heavy droning sludge--White 2 made lots of critical waves when it was released.

oh, and Hair Police; I suppose I should tackle hair police since everyone else seems to loathe them. They're good. Don't go in with the impression that they're a rock band at all (unless you're listening to their first CD on Freedom From, Blow Out Your Blood. Imagine shoggoths, walls oozing blood, bird skeletons cracking under your feet and a really bad acid trip. They do interesting things with structure--that is maybe to say that there isn't much structure at all, but when it does manifest itself it's very very exploratory and confounding. It's like getting from point A to point B very indirectly and never returning to point A.

i wrote a positive review about hair police once. then doubled back in confusion. fuck if i know TM.

yellow swans i want to hear just because i hear from some i respect "great!" and others "wannabe hipster bullshit".

sunroof is great. sometimes very, very pretty. drone mario drone luigi drone yoshi!?!?!?!

the rest, i either know of (borbo) or know not (most of the rest)

les raz i'd know and love if i had $25 at this one particular time. actually, i bet cd alley in chapel hill still has it cause it was there for many moons and it's one of those things that although chapel hill is full of rad, all-knowing types, i bet it's still sittin there from not being on the wave in about 12 months...

ok, i find the to live and shave stuff pretty annoying (though i like the name). ive never really understood what it is people like about them

its sort of infantile, or maybe territorialy urinating? i can understand that, that sort of cathartic exhibitionism, theatricality? but, its just annoying! its like if you love yourself and hate yourself so much at the same time?

What I liked about '300 dollar...' (the record I recommended) is how well put together the whole thing is - its a soup of effects from tapes, machines, saxophone squeals, and 'porno teh funny' type vocals; and on that particurlar record, Bill Orcutt's guitar (all spliced up too). It can be quite dense and hard to get into if you aren't used to it. I needed a couple of listens too as I hadn't heard something like that for quite a while. I didn't look at it in those terms of what are these people feeling -- but I guess that there is something theatrical about the vocals but its a black hole.

I don't have any other records from them.

Four of these bands i've never heard any of their records but have seen them live (hair police, sunno))), TLASILA, yellow swans) and i could only really offer any positive impressions of TLASILA who went from a Harry Pussy style skronk rhythm based improv (96) to this mondo DnB noise clash (03/04). Sunno))) seemed like a one trick pony (but a pretty good one), their earlier style aped early Seattle death sludge pioneers Earth. hair police i've seen 2x and we're horrible once and just tolerable the other. das yellow swans relocated here (SF) about 6 months ago and have yet to leave an impression, i either walked out of the room or just watched, they really don't offer anything new or that interesting. A few of my friends have gone apeshit over them, they don't tug at those same strings for me I guess.

of the rest, the other 3 i've heard records by, I think that Sunroof! is the most likely to get listened to at my house: really drony, expansive and textured pieces. Borbetomagus I've seen with Trumans Water doing a skreenk/skroink horn/guitar free for all and when I was a DJ were a heavily requested free-noise combo. Taj Mahal Travellers beyond their credit for helping pioneer far eastern heavy psych, I don't listen to much of that these days, I'm afraid.

5. atman -- interesting polish band, though not something i would listen to all of th time

7. sunn o))) -- decent Earth knockoff, but I would rather listen to Earth
8. to live and shave in l.a -- Tom Smith has always been a favorite -- imaginative and great sense of humor -- example of noise reaching its potential.

10. borbetomegus -- good skronk
11. taj mahal travellers -- excellent psych fluxus drone.
12. sunroof -- matt bowers is a treasure full of great ideas generally wonderfully executed
13. yellow swans -- mediocre at best, terrible band. im glad they moved from here to SF so I can see them less often open up for other bands.

they're not nearly as playful as comus. they are really into being SERIOUS and ARTFUL and MOODY. which is their ultimate downfall.
