I like him!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 24 December 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the first Audio Sports record with Eye.

His solo stuff really bugs me, gives repetition & 'beauty' a bad name.

(Jon L), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You must bde a anoise dude or somethin'.

I wish the Childisc CDs were being distributed over here. How can you not totally want to hear albums like these:

This one clearly has one the greatest album covers ever. And those titles!

This one looks good, too, duders!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard him on the spotty Reich Remix record, like audio sports -- yay i will look at that shit now

this raises the question -- what musicians do you usually refer to on a first name basis:

EYE

Milton: you don't like "Sign"?!?!?!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

"10th" is good. What else to get????

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

was in bad mood that day upthread.

haven't heard 'sign' -- have only heard 'scope' and saw the bottom of the hill show when he was playing the 'songbook' stuff live, and it was the bad kind of repetition for me. strict cut-n-paste repetition, absolute lack of surprise, these things can be virtues but you have to be in the mood for them

it's not like I have good taste, y'know, currently listening to Mike Oldfield Incantations side 4

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

i seem to remember liking child's view? but i have worse taste than even milton.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

did you know Mike Oldfield wrote "Family Man", later covered by Hall and Oates?

it's on Five Miles Out if you're curious

eye sockets filling with blood (Jon L), Thursday, 21 April 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

things to get:

funfair - this is a lot like scope but prettier. more rhythmic and reich-y, less glitchy (though still glitchy).

child & magic - this is the godhead. toy xylophones, animal noises, baby percussion instruments doing drum and bass, crazy loops and edits, japanese toddlers talking about sleep and death, glass pipes and chimes, etc.

reflection - errornormous world - ok this isn't takemura but it came out on his lollop label. it's treated guitar and drum machine. doing jazzy, abstract, floaty things. clear ringing tones, weird spectral licks that float away, spazzy organic drum machine. maybe it sounds like what a takemura remix of the last track of VCN would sound like. that's just how i'd describe it to other people, to me, it sounds like wake and bake feels.

one year passes...
Can anyone list Nobukazu Takemura tracks that have things that sound like really big processed electric guitars?

lord pooperton (ex machina), Monday, 12 June 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Monday, 12 June 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

seven years pass...

Ok, having only heard Scope and the Child's View album, I had no idea this guy also did a whole album of speech-synthesizer vocal tracks ("10th") that I am really liking on first listen. Some novelty value for sure, but pretty accessible.

been a minute so curious to hear where he's at these days

vox may be an issue for some

some of this kinda sounds a bit like a henry cow album came on too

hmmm

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 00:15 (four months ago)

I like NT but I can't really cope with that kind of singing. Is it him singing?

Now read it backwards. (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 11:39 (four months ago)

The track Wizard In Circus, is an all-time favourite though

Is it him singing?

discogs sez -

Voice – Doro (10) (tracks: 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 13, 15)

with this album as their only credit

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 15:51 (four months ago)

Is it his child singing?

I was driving a van and listening to the college radio station recently and heard 'Lost Treasure' come on, sounded amazing out of nowhere.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 16:33 (four months ago)

o man thx 4 the heads up!

massaman gai (front tea for two), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 18:12 (four months ago)

yes, thx
i’m alright with the vox, the voice is instantly striking (in the sense that it’s ‘off’)
kinda like deerhoof, or an anime character singing along to themself.
over time it pays off, and the indeterminate identity of the voice is a crucial part of this imo
who’s there? you can’t tell anything about this person, their age or gender, except that you’re not listening to a “singer”.
it’s not totally shocking to hear a voice like this on a takemura album, idk it fits.

more surprising: it’s overtly referential and narrative, reference points that seem to be at odds with each other
as well the post-Eno/kanko ongaku stuff you’d expect, there’s lots of Milton Babbitt!! v clear and deliberate invocation of serialism.
there’s like an oil & water, irresolute quality about the whole thing, and the narrative structure.

going back and listening to Scope after, it casts that stuff in kind of a different light… it points out contradictions that were always present in his work

Cock A. Doodledoo (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 19:11 (four months ago)

i don’t know that i’ll come back to this honestly
it sounds a lot like other things

Cock A. Doodledoo (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 19:14 (four months ago)

Tbh I don't know his work very well, I've just heard bits and bobs (like his Tortoise remix). I'd love a primer.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 19:15 (four months ago)

I think most ppl probably came onboard with either Scope or Hoshi No Koe, i mean the sobriety of this one is very striking in comparison

Cock A. Doodledoo (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 19:23 (four months ago)

i don’t know that i’ll come back to this honestly

yeah, that was my initial take but it's early yet... maybe it'll open up now that I know what to expect

Tbh I don't know his work very well, I've just heard bits and bobs (like his Tortoise remix). I'd love a primer.

I started with the meteor single, which I'm still very fond of. I believe those are the two middle tracks on this rip:
