His solo stuff really bugs me, gives repetition & 'beauty' a bad name.

I wish the Childisc CDs were being distributed over here. How can you not totally want to hear albums like these:
This one clearly has one the greatest album covers ever. And those titles!
This one looks good, too, duders!

this raises the question -- what musicians do you usually refer to on a first name basis:
EYE
?

haven't heard 'sign' -- have only heard 'scope' and saw the bottom of the hill show when he was playing the 'songbook' stuff live, and it was the bad kind of repetition for me. strict cut-n-paste repetition, absolute lack of surprise, these things can be virtues but you have to be in the mood for them
it's not like I have good taste, y'know, currently listening to Mike Oldfield Incantations side 4

funfair - this is a lot like scope but prettier. more rhythmic and reich-y, less glitchy (though still glitchy).
child & magic - this is the godhead. toy xylophones, animal noises, baby percussion instruments doing drum and bass, crazy loops and edits, japanese toddlers talking about sleep and death, glass pipes and chimes, etc.
reflection - errornormous world - ok this isn't takemura but it came out on his lollop label. it's treated guitar and drum machine. doing jazzy, abstract, floaty things. clear ringing tones, weird spectral licks that float away, spazzy organic drum machine. maybe it sounds like what a takemura remix of the last track of VCN would sound like. that's just how i'd describe it to other people, to me, it sounds like wake and bake feels.

Ok, having only heard Scope and the Child's View album, I had no idea this guy also did a whole album of speech-synthesizer vocal tracks ("10th") that I am really liking on first listen. Some novelty value for sure, but pretty accessible.

I like NT but I can't really cope with that kind of singing. Is it him singing?

The track Wizard In Circus, is an all-time favourite though

Is it his child singing?
I was driving a van and listening to the college radio station recently and heard 'Lost Treasure' come on, sounded amazing out of nowhere.

yes, thxi’m alright with the vox, the voice is instantly striking (in the sense that it’s ‘off’) kinda like deerhoof, or an anime character singing along to themself. over time it pays off, and the indeterminate identity of the voice is a crucial part of this imowho’s there? you can’t tell anything about this person, their age or gender, except that you’re not listening to a “singer”.it’s not totally shocking to hear a voice like this on a takemura album, idk it fits.
more surprising: it’s overtly referential and narrative, reference points that seem to be at odds with each other as well the post-Eno/kanko ongaku stuff you’d expect, there’s lots of Milton Babbitt!! v clear and deliberate invocation of serialism. there’s like an oil & water, irresolute quality about the whole thing, and the narrative structure.
going back and listening to Scope after, it casts that stuff in kind of a different light… it points out contradictions that were always present in his work

i don’t know that i’ll come back to this honestlyit sounds a lot like other things
― Cock A. Doodledoo (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 19:14 (four months ago)
Tbh I don't know his work very well, I've just heard bits and bobs (like his Tortoise remix). I'd love a primer.
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 19:15 (four months ago)
I think most ppl probably came onboard with either Scope or Hoshi No Koe, i mean the sobriety of this one is very striking in comparison
― Cock A. Doodledoo (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 19:23 (four months ago)
i don’t know that i’ll come back to this honestly
yeah, that was my initial take but it's early yet... maybe it'll open up now that I know what to expect
I started with the meteor single, which I'm still very fond of. I believe those are the two middle tracks on this rip:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM3u8mbOaP0
