el paso is a scorched bordertown, its sister city is juarez just cross the rio grande which cuts throught the cities and forms the border between texas and mexico. it is extremely hot in the summer. have you seen john sayles' "lone star"? that movie gives you a pretty good view of el paso. i think that movie "traffic" does too.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I went to Texas to visit my mother (who just recently moved there) over break. She lives on Padre Island, which is less Texas-y and more beachvacationspot-y. It was very nice. All of the old people there are retired hippies who constantly make references having "wasted too many brain cells" in their youth to excuse their absent-mindedness. It's charming. Pelicans are so noise. I also spent a night in Austin, where there are lots of hills, and passed through San Antonio to see the Alamo, which wasn't lousy at all. I mean, I didn't pay attention to any of the historical stuff, but it's very well landscaped and has huge goldfish. If you like trees, go to the Alamo. I fucking love trees.

I'm leaving Texas, but I love it. I think a lot of people used to really urbanized areas don't get Texas, because even our urban areas aren't like northern ones like Chicago or New York or Boston. My friend said that Dallas is like a big suburb. I don't really think of it like that, but I guess compared to other places, it is.

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I've been to El Paso got the train through San Antonio

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Eagle Pass, rather. though the black people/Army Base are imported/fictional.

I've been to Houston. I would like to go to: Archer City, Austin, Canyon, Childress, Del Rio, El Paso, Marfa and maybe College Station, Fort Worth, Galveston, Rio Grande City and San Antonio. And I certainly want to go to Big Bend and Guadalupe and maybe Padre Island.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

and maybe Abilene. but not for too long.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

the thing is, you can't talk about "it". there are like 5 texases.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

whoops, yet it has the same feel of el paso (at least my experiences)...

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Texas is all gray and brown and dirty and dead. The cities are some of the most congested and sprawling urban centers in the country. The food sucks ("Mexican" food slathered in sour cream and cheese; The BBQ doesn't come anywhere close to Kansas City or Memphis). Austin is like the West Berlin of Texas, but even still, you have to wear a helmet if you're going to ride a bicycle there. Every president from there took the United States into war. Red ants and killer bees. Everything's big in Texas including assholes and big mouths. From Whitman's tower to Waco to Dealey Plaza to Jasper, Texas proves that it's just another rotten place to in which to die.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Tex-Mex ain't Mexican food PP, and we like it fine. (Though Mex-Mex is good too - my fave being Yucatan cuisine). Actually, I don't see how Dallas is any more a sprawling urban center than Los Angeles. And we have no smog. (Dallas also has the interesting characteristic of being one of the few places in Texas not totally overrun by conservative politics, if that makes a difference. Bush won here, but only marginally.)

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm glad that Tejas likes their Texican food. Most people don't enjoy dairy and gristle plates. Saying that Dallas isn't any more sprawling than L.A. is like saying that Darryl Worley isn't any more jingoistic than Toby Keith. Suffice to say, you can get to mile marker 85 on I-30 and still feel like you're in the metroplex. You might not have any smog, but texas does have one of the worst environmental records in the country.

I'm sure you're a fine person, Dominique, but when it comes to your state, I've seen way too much hat and not enough cattle.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Southerners talk great!

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I wish I was Southern. :(

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

awesome rant, PP, but have you been to West Texas?

"Mexican" food slathered in sour cream and cheese

my Dad found all food in San Antonio covered in horrible, unidentified cheese and inedible.

The BBQ doesn't come anywhere close to Kansas City or Memphis

the best bbq place in Houston didn't impress me that much, but I get fantastic Texas bbq in NYC. perhaps this is a regional preference?

and Darryl Worley's sort of nice when he's on Al Franken's show.

I don't see how Dallas is any more a sprawling urban center than Los Angeles

1) "urban"
2) the ocean (and mountains)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, gabbneb. I've been through West Texas. I've seen the pockfaced terrain of Midland/Odessa and the urine-colored haze of El Paso, but avoided places like Jefferson Davis County where secessionists tried to take back their white culture with guns a few years ago. The biggest insult to injury was that it took fuckin' eight hours to get from Abilene to fuckin' New Mexico.

If I want to go see buttes and mesas and plateaus and javelinas, I'll stick with any of the other large western states who are not constantly warning me Not to Mess With Them. Otherwise, I've seen enough of this to last me for awhile.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

"the pockfaced terrain of Midland/Odessa" = where my son is now

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Actually, my main reason to hate on Dallas isn't the environment, but the crime. As I understand it, we have the worst murder rate in the country. Also, compared to other big cities I've been to, Dallas is a little faceless. We don't have lots of landmarks, or neat old buildings to look at - the oldest ones are abandoned warehouses downtown with broken windows (even though I still like looking at them from the highway).

However, Dallas is hardly lacking in personality - it just isn't a personality that appeals to everyone. It is distinctly "Southern" in a lot of ways, as far as how people greet you, and the pace at which life seems to move is probably slower than up north. We don't live so close to one another. That's actually a reason I don't really want to move up north; everything seems so crowded, packed in. But that contributes to other things about that culture that are cool, so I guess you just have to live with it.

The bad part about having everything spread out down here is that you have to drive everywhere, which surely contributes to environmental problems we do have. The traffic can be bad, but I've never noticed it being any worse than other metropolitan areas. And Dallas is metropolitan, despite whatever talk in this thread implies otherwise. It's just not "urban". We weren't built 200 years ago, and when we were built, we were built by people who apparently valued personal space. And why not? They had tons of land at their disposal. That, naturally, leads to the personality of the city, and the state.

When my friends visit, they always comment on how everyone seems to "dress up" here, which I never actually noticed myself. I guess it's true. Women do their hair to go out, put on all their makeup. That seems like a Southern thing to me, but more than that, it's a Texas thing - and more than that, I think it's a Dallas thing. I had to live in Lubbock and Denton for many years, and they weren't like that. Houston is similar, but seems more urbanized, so as a Dallasite, it's kind of turn-off. Austin really isn't like any other Texas city I can think of, but it has obvious cultural charms (including all the basic college-town characteristics), especially for Texan artists and creative people. However, on the whole, it seems kind of overrated to me (e.g., the record stores aren't really any better than ones I go to here, and really, the music scene isn't what I want, no matter how more "open" it might be. that goes double for Denton, despite the fact that its music school produces some of the best jazz players in the country).

I don't know. I'm still sad at how often this place gets put down for what seem to me to be superficial reasons. I mean, PP, Tex-Mex is hardly just dairy and "gristle" (which isn't even right: Tex-Mex is far more ground beef than gristle)? What about chili rellenos and tortilla soup and huevos rancheros? To say nothing about margaritas here! I'm not going to pretend that Dallas offers the same cultural stimuli as New York or San Fran. It doesn't, and that's part of the reason I'm moving. But it's really easy to miss the good parts about it; parts I haven't seen anywhere else.

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Dominique, maybe I missed it but where are you moving to?

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

oh, I'm looking at places in the SF bay area. actually flying up there in a couple of weeks to choose!

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, Nick. At least some day, the words to "My Old Kentucky Home" will mean something to him.

Dallas is a little faceless. We don't have lots of landmarks

I also hope that i didn't come across too mean, Dom. Even Cincinnati has their share of abandoned warehouses.

You do have one prominent landmark in Dallas. Too bad it looks like a big giant goober.
