DO YOU LIKE FUGAZI??!?!? I DO

LSD ARISTOCAT (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

i like fugazi album titles as pronounced by mark e. smith, yes

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

For some reason I couldn't get into Repeater back when I owned Fugazi albums.
I liked 13 Songs, Steady Diet, Kill Taker, Red Medicine, the Instrument VHS...
I might like it if I heard it now.

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

My XXXGF thought that this song was "1... 2... 3... ROCK FREEDOM"...

I ROFFLED... and larped.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

My XXXGF
She was a porn star?

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

But Repeater was definitely my favorite... A little too many Gang of Four rip-offs maybe but it was nice for skating.

She was a porn star?

A gentleman never tells.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

! @ # Repeater! I liked 13 songs better though too. I don't know where those records are now.

msp (msp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

13 songs is the WORST.

Best was In On The Killtaker.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

red medicine is what lured me in. my friends loved it and i was kinda meh. i was a pre-teener on minor threat and something about the early fugazi stuff just didn't punch good. after i got into rm tho, i think i warmed to the earlier stuff. iotk has some great tunage.

msp (msp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

i used to hate the guy stuff on the early records. i blame minor threat for this.

American Apparel and Jeanne-Claude (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I love the sound of the Gibson SG.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I like that one instrumental one a helluva lot. I only heard The Fugazis for the first time ever, like, a couple weeks ago.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL I HAD A NOTEBOOK WITH I HEART IAN MACKAYE ON IT>so ghey

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

i bought the first album at the thrift store a couple weeks ago cuz i like waiting room. i used to have the tape. i love ian's voice, but i never liked that eyebrow dude's pipes. he's kind of a bummer. i'm more of an egghunt/pailhead kinda guy.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

nicka: SWEET & LOW? That is a good 'un.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

1st ep: blows
margin walker: pwnz
repeater: great
steady diet: 80% blows
kill taker: never heard
red medicine: never heard
instrument: just heard recently...pretty awesome

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

kill taker & red medicine are probably the best, deebz.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

the argument? that record was a turd!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

ddturd

American Apparel and Jeanne-Claude (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

the argument's got some good jams on it.. epic problem, ex spectator, strangelight and life & limb are all fine. Fugazi were consistently good for at least half an album being good to great, even if the rest was just "more of the same."

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, the subject is my impression of Ian's voice just before they start playing on some live version of "Repeater".

Malkmus/Jick's guitarist Mike's tour diary (2003):

Washington, DC:

Every time I walk into the 9:30 Club, I remember how much I love it. Big, clean backstage area, with sleeping lofts and phone jacks a-plenty for internet hook-up, yummy food (Nachos of Ulysses...always a favorite), and really good-sounding monitors. Sometimes you'll go anywhere just to get away from the club right up until the last minute when you have to go back to play, (hello Houston!), but I'd pay rent to live at the 9:30 Club if I could. By accident Steve from the Jicks and Steve from Dead Meadow were wearing the exact same outfit: pale blue long sleeve shirt, blue jeans and blue Adidas with yellow stripes. Trippy. The next day was a day off, and after a day of museums and movies, we met up with the Dead Meadow dudes for some fake meat Chinese. Brendan Canty from Fugazi came to dinner too, and afterwards we wound up at Steve from Dead Meadow's place, which weirdly enough was the same place where Brendan had lived years before. He gave us the guided tour, and we got to see the like 10' by 15' dank and spider- filled basement rooms where he and Guy lived for 10 years. I don't think I could've done it, but then again I don't think I could've made "Repeater" either. Respect!
