What does OOIOO really mean?

There are three patterns of beats that recur in all tāḷam-s - these are the laghu, the dhṛtam and the anudhṛtam.

* A dhṛtam is a pattern of 2 akṣaram-s, with the first akṣaram marked with the palm face down, and the second with the face up. This is notated 'O'.

* An anudhṛtam is a single akṣaram, marked with the palm face down and notated 'U'.

* A laghu is a pattern with the first akṣaram marked with the palm face down, followed by a variable number of akṣaram-s marked with successive fingers starting with the little finger. This is notated '1'

The number of akṣaram-s in the laghu is one of 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9, and this characterises the variety (jāti) of the tāḷam. The five varieties are:

yoshimi said that eYe gave her the name for the band.

"ooi" means "many" in japanese, and symmetry features very largely in boredoms related artwork and music.

am i nerd? i have moved ooioo from the numbers to the letters at a record store before.

doesn't "ai oh" sound like "love" or something? I'm sure they are away of the similarities to indian rhythm notation though!

nice, true, it probably has many meanings on many levels.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 4 February 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

so using that indian rhythm stuff: OOIOO = 2,2,{3 4 5 7 9}2,2

"OOI" (all 5 permutations) is a popular south indian drum pattern

By popular, I mean "used a lot" in classical music.

show was pretty great. first time i've seen them. 3 thumbs up

jaxon, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

super good show but the venue was ass and 75% of the crowd was crepey male pitchforkers with "woah azn gurlz" fetishes. i think i saw jared leto in the crowd.

hahah. i was there w/azn wife and pitchforker dominique leone (she's hotter in person)

i didnt really notice that about the crowd.

for added entertainment, while remy and i were waiting in line we were spying on these people standing at a second-story window in the apartment building across the street, and we were all "lol i wonder what they're talking about, this is just like rear window/disturbia." five minutes later two cop cars showed up at the building, and a helicopter was circling overhead.

get bent, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

show was great, except for the two guys in front of me who talked the whole time about ways to get their band promoted on youtube.

1) i think i peed next to leto in the teeny-tiny bathroom. he was wearing a nice shirt.

2) a very cute girl kicked me in the leg. hard, totally purposefully, flirtatiously. i wanted to craigslist missed connections about that, but i couldn't think of much more to say than 'cute girl at OOIOO who kicked me in the leg, intentionally, i like you. i'm a believer in symmetry. you can come back and kick the other one sometime'

3) opening act – neung phak – were pretty good. espesh vomiting flags.

Haha, I remember this!

I didn't notice the crowd too much because as soon as I got in there I made sure to go directly to the front of the stage to have the best spot and didn't budge. I didn't regret it, even if neung phak turned out to suck, who I thought were pretty hilarious. My friend wasn't too keen on them though, unsurprisingly.

Jack Burton, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

i liked em. very pop tatari.

chaki, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

yah they were great! i'd never heard of them but i kept getting a sun city girls vibe and turns out they're on scg's label, i totally patted myself on the back. awesome night all around, my only complaint about the crowd is that there wasn't more gay raving! didn't see any of yous but it was pretty crowded so

strgn, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

I actually wanted to ask one of them if they liked the Sun City Girls, and what language they were singing in, if any at all. They started to win me over at the end of that one song where they started flipping out at the end and banging on sheet metal and stuff. I also got a kick during the flag vomitting bit where it turned out that one guy's hair was a wig all along.

Jack Burton, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

i didnt see any of yous either.

▒█▄█ ▄▄ ▒█▄█, Thursday, 29 March 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

milton told me it was Burmese, and I liked them too, at least the straight up pop stuff -- it reminded me of the Thai beat a go-go compiliation I used to have

Dominique, Thursday, 29 March 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

i recognized a track from one of the thai beat comps i have

get bent, Thursday, 29 March 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

my only complaint about the crowd is that there wasn't more gay raving!

yah! excepting a tubby arrhythmic iranian (doing a, like, sufi guy lip bite) right in front of me, there was hardly any movement at all. i felt really noticeable bouncing around, and kinda checked myself to stop from dancing – at least until near the end, when i forgot.

remy bean, Thursday, 29 March 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

I also was surprised at the lack of movement -- maybe it was too crowded?

Dominique, Thursday, 29 March 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

one of the members, Mark Gergis aka Porest, compiled a few of the Sublime Freqencies CDs -- Neung Phak is the alter ego of the band Mono Pause, the group where they cover the songs from those comps. the project goes back about 7-8 years & obviously endeared them to the SCGs

the Porest solo albums are the shit

Milton Parker, Thursday, 29 March 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

i've met one of the guys from neung phak a few times. jason. keyboardist. he was in CRACK: WAR. i didn't like them at all though. way too jam bandy.
