OK, IS IT ME OR DOES IRMIN SCHMIDT COME OFF LIKE A TOTAL DOOSH IN THE CAN DOC.

HE SEEMS COMPLETLY TALENTLESS, WOULD CAN BE BETTER WITHOUT KEYBOARDS.

HOLGER RULES THOUGH, CAN YOU GUIDE ME TO HIS BETTER SOLO STUFF PLEASE, DID JAKI PUT OUT SOLO RECORDS?

I thought Holger seemed a little weird at some points in his interview... saying music was work and what not.

Jaki is treatsy and I think his English comprehension could use some work.

irmin was the only classically trained one in can, so maybe he does come off a little stilted.

but his keyboard style was very creative, a lot of karate chopping and swooshing.

jaki has released a lot of solo stuff, some with jah wobble.

holger's solo stuff is hit and miss, some is horribly dated (the 80s stuff). jon loves ROME REMAINS ROME.

i have it if you want.

IRMIN's CHAINMAIL=CLASSIC

ITS JUST THEY KEEP SAYING THAT THEY WERE A "GROUP" AND THERE WAS NO "LEADER" AND SCHMIDT DID ALL THE TALKING IN THE INTERVIEWS, HE CAME OFF LIKE A CREEP.

I CAN SEE THAT JAKI IS QUIET AND JUST WANTS TO DESTROY THE DRUMS...BUT SHUT UP UP IRMIN, YOU SUCK!

Michael Karoli was actually the least amazing player in the group.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaki's first solo project was the band Phantom Band, introducing Sheldon Ancel on lead vocals who later turned up all over Czukay's solo albums, for better or worse. I don't recommend the Phantom Band records.

Sheldon has a weird style and when he's on, he's on, but when's he's off it creeps me out, it's as if the English-as-a-2nd-Language Can guys found another loopy Black American dude and turned him loose, and they can't tell that some of Sheldon's rhymes are WACK (rhyming "I Ride The Freight Train of Love" with "I Ride The Freight Train of Love"... wait a minute, brilliant)

I like Czukay's Movies and On The Way To The Peak Of Normal even more than Can 68-74, 'cause they taught me much about tape editing; Czukay no longer has to worry about hurting the other band members feelings anymore, he doesn't have to faithfully assemble band performances as on the Can records, he's free to slice everyone's parts into pieces and put them back together again and layer them over with hordes of shortwave counterpoint.

Der Osten Ist Rot has some great songs (title track and the ending drone) and lots of filler, but Rome Remains Rome is the full production high effort Weird Pop Record and it's fantastic. I like some things on some of the later records, but only get those later.

Irmin and Czukay didn't like each other much towards the end, you can see them sniping in the Can Doc, Irmin's a regressive classical dork and his solo records lay on the chamber music cheese with all wildness surgically removed but there's one 15 minute piece, "Man On Fire", from one of his solo Soundtracks albums, worth downloading.

NOT OTM. IVE LISTENED TO THE RECORDS 4,OOO TIMES. I THINK HE IS WEAK. KARATE CHOPPING A KEYBOARD DOES NOTHING FOR ME. HE HAD NO CONTROL OVER HIS SOUND, IT WAS ALL RANDOM, AND HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS STRUGGLING TO "DO STUFF" IN A LOT OF THOSE PERFORMANCES.

Michael Karoli was actually the least amazing player in the group.

-- Tim Ellison (timejeanne...), February 8th, 2005.

OTM, IN THAT KAROLI REALLY ADDED NOTHING, HIS SOLO'S WERE ACCEPTABLE/MEDIOCRE AT BEST.

BUT HIS GUITAR SOUND IS FUCKING DISGUSTING, AND SEEMED TO GET WORSE AS TIME WENT ON.

I WANT JAKI SOLO, JUST DESTROYING THE DRUMS...WHERE IS THAT?

not solo but c'mon over some time and listen to Manfred Schoof, "European Echoes." Jaki plays KILLER FREE JAZZ DRUMS on that and slays all within earshot.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

thoughts:

1) I agree with the premise of the thread. After watching the DVD, I came to the same conclusion (that Irmin's playing ain't that great and he's kinda annoying as a person too).

2) Based on the CD of solo stuff that came with the DVD set, it doesn't seem like Jaki's playing is as interesting as it used to be. Too cerebral and not powerful enough or something.

3) I like Karoli and think his "Sofortkontakt" tracks are the best ones on that CD.

4) I've downloaded some random things from Czukay ("Der Osten ist Rot", some tracks from the EP he did with Jah Wobble....) and all of it annoys the hell out of me.

5) I'm beginning to think Damo's stuff is where it's at, solo wise. The thing he just released with Cul De Sac is my favorite album right now.

Christ, another one. Will you people please listen to the cuts I identified? His elec. piano playing on "Paperhouse" would be another, although it's harder to hear the articulations with his machine gun riffing on that. If you have the video of them doing the song on Beat Club you can see him playing it there.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I am envious. I have got to make it to Kyoto.

I saw the Karoli/Suzuki show at Justice League five years back or so... spent fifty minutes hating on the boring formless jams of the opening band, just waiting for the nothing to end, when suddenly during the last number I'm all 'wait a minute' and then the singer says 'WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK FOR A SECOND SET' and I look at him closer and oh dear it was Damo

(Jon L), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb i'm just saying that he's doing some of that same super-fast, abstract-shape improvising on that first section of "paperhouse" that you hear him doing in the organ soloing at the end of "halleluwah" and throughout much of "half past one." because of the mix on "paperhouse," you can't hear all of the articulations and can't necessarily tell--unless you're listening for it--that he's doing this. i have no idea why you say it's horrid.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, did you see Holger play when he made the rounds last time? It was really expensive and I ended up going to a cheaper show instead.

"the justice league" haha, i only went there a few times (i went to the kennel club a few times, including PAVEMENT IN 1992). i did see a great jim o'rourke/nobukazu takemura show there though. v00redoms are coming in May!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

justice league/kennel club, May will be my first visit to the Independent. Must be better now that they have the bar out of the middle of the room.

I saw that Czukay show -- basically a DJ set with extra noises over the top. Frustrating amount of obvious miming, singing along with the original vocals, even pretending to play certain keyboard parts -- but the live versions of the stuff from New Millenium were surprisingly different/good, his comedy routines between songs were weird x 4 and he opened with 'Biomutanten'

I really liked the Czukay/Walker show in 98, they played for over 2 hours straight, Czukay laying into some serious noises. The excerpt from the SF show is the best part of that 2 CD set they put out.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)
