Since there's been various buzz abt this band on ILM and this board too (I think), let's have a thread. Nice, kind of quiet psych-y big-band folk. Live they were a nontet, on the CDR only an octet (+peace.) Things that spring immediately to mind: these guys are fucking tight with the harmony vox; for sometimes up to seven or eight of them to be singing together, they're ALWAYS together. Instrumentally they're tight also, but it seems that sometimes various members would have nothing to do. Which is too bad. It's nice that they don't let the sound get too cluttered, but I feel kinda bad for the violinist who plays just a few seconds during a five+ minute song, ya know? Comparions to the incredible string band are fairly OTM. One of the dudes voices is very Heronish, and there's a vaguely twee sense about the lyrics sometimes. First song they played live started out with "I don't want to grow up" in a twitching falsetto; sometimes cloying or cringey, but altogether not bad. All of it was good, but the more rockin' percussive tunes are the ones that I personally enjoyed more. Electric guitar makes appearances on the CD but didn't at the show I attended; apparently the set a few nights earlier was more electrified/rock&rollin.

ian me three

brock (brock), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

interesting conversation about them last night at free103. all the noizesters think they'll be huge in 6 months.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I think they'll be huge in two weeks, honestly.

Vanishing Voice, well... I liked the first jam they did, which started with 'em all chanting something about the moon and with some nice crazy rhythms. The end of the set wasn't so hot--Pete playing simple blues solos while lucas made a little bit of noise with his tapes and heidi and jarvis were basically inaudible. On a scale of 10, I give it a 6.5, I guess.

I am ripping the CD now and will gmail to ya'll. Rog, does yr hotmail account accept large-ish attachments?

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

you're complaining that VANISHING VOICE was inaudible?

hahahaha, just kidding.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Okay I sent the three tracks from the CD out. if anyone else wants em, let me know. and rog, if they didn't come through for you, i can send you a hardcopy of it. i still have to send you money for the polyamory comp anyway.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)
