it's pretty nuts, yeah?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

i think it's easily their best album. the devil isn't red sucked. the breakdown:

disc 1 = drone with vocals and samples and snippets and claptrap drums and lots of NOIZE

disc 2 = classic hella only it's much more proggy and even kinda sounds like eno!!!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

disc 1 = zach hill just released a solo album and needs to fucking chill

disc 2 = fucking amazing video game, prog, kraut jams that are totally mental

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

basically, spencer seim owns.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah the holy smokes album holy sucked. but i like the disc 1 shit! and 2 is so fucking ace. it's all the pop hits.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

i don't hear the eno part. but disc 2 fucking rocks. it's the music i always want to make.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

"W" made me think of "here come the warm jets." but i've also been listening to that eno song for the past two days straight, so maybe it's just in my brane.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

"celebs" i've seen at hella shows: ari up and trey anastasio

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

i just realized that the first disc also kinda reminds me of ink & dagger

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Man, I haven't heard Ink & Dagger mentioned for a while. They were experiencing a rebirth of popularity around Philly not too long ago. Is this shit slskable?

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

sucks

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Zach Hill > Spencer Seim

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

wrong, jack. zach is a mental drummer, but it is quite apparent from this 2xcd who has the real talent.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

i don't "get" hella, i think it's like a zappa/zorn/mr. bungle thing chromosonal defect i have missing.

NOT AS LOVELY AS SPENCER SEIM'S WORK ON THE DISC TWO OF THE NEW HELLA ALBUM.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

i think the difference between spencer and zach is their respective abilities to move past simple technical playing ability into songwriting. zach can play the fuck out of anything -- the d00d really is fucking astonishing -- but he can't seem to see past his own sticks. spencer, on the other hand, is more adept at using his furious fingaz in ways that are more than just steve vai guitar world wankery. zach's playing definitely has its place, but without spencer it wouldn't be nearly as listenable.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

i don't know who taught spencer how to play the drums (maybe zach), but he is pretty damn good at that too.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

WORST THREAD EVER.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

WORST COMEBACK EVER.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

yes, that was pretty bad on your part. go criticize records you haven't heard with jack cole!

i have said nothing of the new hella record. i'm merely sharing what i think of the two from what i have heard from them together and separately. results may vary depending on taste. that said, at least z@ch isn't a notch on the bedpost of

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

she kinda looks like marilyn chambers there.

hey yanc3y why you no returnna dell'emaile?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

been k-busy, bud. will do so later today/early tomorrow.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

i personally think both discs are mediocre and quite bad. i was sort of dissapointed when i heard this was coming out, because a few months ago i read an interview where zach said their next full length would only consist of bass-guitar and floor toms or something. that would have been amazing.

branden d. (american_grizzly), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

methinks he was joking about lightning bolt.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

having now heard it, the Church Gone Wild buries the Chirpin' Hard side.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

this album sucks and their four piece live show is by far the worst live show on earth

you make me feel like a tyrannosaurus rex (deangulberry), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

never seen the 4 piece live show. only seen them as a duo with j@n3t w3155 drooling over seim.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 21 March 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

it's bad. big time bait and switch when the other two dudes come in at the end of the first song of the set and you realize that you can only hear their instruments in the mix.

zach hill needs to fucking having his head examined for doing an album with the two losers from Marilyn Manson and Masters Of Reality -- not to mention Team Sleep with that Deftones bozo.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 8 April 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

have noise dudes heard nervous cop at all?
(zach hill and some deerhoof people and joanna newsom)
i like nervous cop but i've never actuall listened to hella. do i buy one hella cd from the record store that doesn't have anything, just so i have something to buy?

tehresa (tehresa), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

if you are going to buy a hella album, get the first one: "hold your horse is"

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

thanks for advice cutty.

i just read a review that talks about why lightning bolt is better than hella.
durrrr.

tehresa (tehresa), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't really like Nervous Cop that much. Natural Dreamers are pretty enjoyable though.

David Svensson (deangulberry), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah, nervous cop is annoying.

natural dreamers is good dork rock.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

stupid record store didn't have any hella, good or bad.
i hate that place. i want to move.

tehresa (tehresa), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

if i had admin powers, i'd delete this thread ... it makes me sad every time i see it

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN

David Svensson (deangulberry), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

dude find 1 bop shop or lakeshore

The Scottish Restauranteer (ex machina), Sunday, 10 April 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

lakeshore can eat me. they never have anything i look for.
bop shop rocks but the point was that i wanted to take a walk to the record store, and bop shop would be a very long walk. maybe i will buy one bike instead!

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I'm finding "Church Gone Wild" to be very compelling these days. I've listented to it all the way through a couple times this week and come to really dig it. The inwardly directed nature of the aggression is pretty neat too, it's like a small child started digging a hole in the ground and pummelled the base of the hole with hammers over the course of an entire while screaming different chants and phrases at unpredictable juctures.
There's a lot of great stuff on "Chirpin' Hard" but it seems so slight and restrictively "indie" placed along side of Zach Hill's ritualistic experiment with duration and texture.

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

what up with crap like Goon Moon and Team Sleep?

jack cole's skeletal remains found at the bottom of a ravine (jackcole), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

i like team sleep a lot. but if you don't like the deftones, i don't see much in it for you.
